Southwest Airlines announces start date for assigned seating

CNN3 days ago
The end of an era is official for Southwest Airlines passengers.
On Monday, the airline announced a start date for its new assigned seating, which will bring the airline's longstanding open-seat boarding tradition to an end.
For flights beginning on January 27, 2026, passengers will have options for seat selection at the time of booking, Southwest said in its announcement.
'Our Customers want more choice and greater control over their travel experience,' said Tony Roach, Southwest executive vice president of customer and brand, in a news release.
'Assigned seating unlocks new opportunities for our Customers — including the ability to select Extra Legroom seats — and removes the uncertainty of not knowing where they will sit in the cabin,' Roach said.
Various fare bundles will offer some options for seat selection during booking. Different types of seats — Extra Legroom, Preferred and Standard — will also appear as part of those bundles.
The assigned-seat era will also usher in a new group-based boarding process.
Extra Legroom seats will have priority in boarding Groups 1-2.
Premium fares and loyalty program members and credit cardholders will board earlier in the process. Details are available on the airline's website.
The airline announced its plans to end its free-for-all seating arrangement last summer.
The change allows the low-fare carrier to charge a premium for some of the seats on its planes to better compete with legacy carriers American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Those airlines generate much of their revenue by charging more for premium seating.

Inlyte Energy Awarded $4.1M DOE Grant to Deploy Iron-Sodium Battery for Community Resilience in High Fire Risk Zone of Northern California

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., July 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Inlyte Energy, a manufacturer of iron-sodium battery energy storage systems, will deploy a first-of-its-kind resilience-focused battery at Alliance Redwoods Conference Grounds in Sonoma County, CA. The project, developed with partner Vital Energy Solutions, will enhance wildfire resilience for a critical evacuation zone, reduce facility electricity costs, and provide a diesel-free alternative for long-duration backup power. The project is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity with a $4.1 million award from the Critical Facility Energy Resilience program. Third-party validation of the project's performance will be conducted in partnership with project partners Electric Power Research Institute and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. "With power outages growing more severe, Inlyte's iron-sodium batteries deliver resilient and affordable energy storage where communities need it most," said Ben Kaun, Inlyte Chief Commercial Officer. "This project demonstrates our mission in action." Inlyte's domestically manufactured, non-flammable battery solution is uniquely suited for this project, maintaining performance at high ambient temperatures. When paired with Alliance Redwoods' planned 570 kW solar array, Inlyte's 200 kW / 4 MWh battery system is expected to reduce the facility's annual electricity costs by up to $300,000. It will also provide up to two weeks of emergency backup, allowing Alliance Redwoods to phase out its reliance on diesel generators and reduce local air and noise pollution. "Customers are demanding safe, scalable, and low-cost energy storage," said Antonio Baclig, CEO of Inlyte Energy. "Our domestically manufactured iron-sodium battery delivers on all fronts, and we are proud to be creating a more resilient and secure energy future in the U.S." Located in a Tier 3 High Fire Threat Zone, Alliance Redwoods is a critical resilience site in Occidental, serving as a designated community evacuation center and, when necessary, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection staging area. The project will also provide backup power for Russian River Utility's nearby water pump station, which is essential for public water supply and firefighting efforts. "This project is a game-changer for our camp and our community. With Inlyte's battery and our solar array, we can operate independently from the grid during outages at a greatly reduced cost," said Mike Dethlefsen, Board Member at Alliance Redwoods. "Crucially, it ensures we can remain operational to serve our community and power other critical local infrastructure when the grid goes down." Sonoma County-based Vital Energy will manage project development, engineering, and construction, serving as the lead integrator for the microgrid and Inlyte's iron-sodium battery. The project is scheduled to be operational in 2027. "Our customers in high fire-risk areas such as Sonoma County need microgrid solutions that deliver both resilience and savings without compromising on fire safety," said Akshay Pagare, Project Developer at Vital Energy. "This project will have a tremendous impact on the local community and become a flagship project for other at-risk areas." The Alliance Redwoods project will serve as a replicable model for communities and critical facilities seeking to improve energy resilience, ensure public safety, and reduce operational costs with domestically manufactured solutions. What Google Parent Alphabet's AI Spending Boost Says About Big Tech Earnings Next Week

Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) said it plans to spend $10 billion more in capital expenditures this year than previously anticipated as the company works to meet surging demand for Google Cloud. Other Big Tech firms could follow its lead when they report next week, JPMorgan analysts said. Alphabet told investors Wednesday that it now expects capex of $85 billion in 2025, up from $75 billion, which CFO Anat Ashkenazi attributed to robust demand for Google Cloud. The additional spend reflects more investment in servers and the building of AI data centers, Ashkenazi said on a call with analysts. JPMorgan expects the increase 'to foreshadow similar trends in spending appetite from the remainder of the U.S. hyperscaler cohort.' Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta (META) are slated to report results on Wednesday, with Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL) to follow a day later. Google expanding its access to compute power could be a good sign for hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services looking to do the same, JPMorgan said. More servers and data centers coming online 'suggests that AWS is likely [also] seeing easing supply constraints,' the analysts said. Amazon earlier this year said it expects to spend more than $100 billion in capex in 2025, the 'vast majority' of which would go toward AI for Amazon Web Services, according to CEO Andy Jassy. Meta meanwhile has said it expects capex of $64 billion to $72 billion to grow its AI capacity this year, while Microsoft reaffirmed a plan to spend $80 billion when the two tech titans last reported quarterly results in April. Shares of Alphabet rose about 1% in recent trading Thursday to above $194. JPMorgan raised its price target for the stock to $232 from $200, a bit ahead of the mean of analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha near $217.
