The Two Game Wardens Who Cracked the CJ Alexander Poaching Case Finally Get to Tell Their Side of the Story
The criminal case surrounding the Christopher 'CJ' Alexander buck captivated deer hunters across the country last year. In late 2023, Alexander claimed to have killed a record-breaking buck on his sister's small property in Ohio. Shortly after he started sharing this made-up story with OL and other hunting outlets, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources opened a poaching investigation. Then the agency went silent.
A year passed before the agency released more details. And in that time, Alexander wove a compelling story in which he publicly accused the DNR of trying to undermine his accomplishment. Many social media users were persuaded by his story, and even donated to his GoFundMe account. Meanwhile, the two officers investigating his case couldn't say a word.
Now that the case is closed — Alexander to pled guilty to 14 charges and was sentenced to fines and jail time — they're able to go on the record about how the investigation played out, and why it took so long for them to share those details with the public. So this week on the Outdoor Life Podcast, we sat down with those two Ohio game wardens: Officers Matt Roberts and Isaiah Gifford.
We spoke with Roberts and Gifford after they received the Pope and Young Club's Wildlife Law Enforcement Award last month for their work on the case.
'You know, [Alexander] can tell a very good story, and he ultimately got a lot of the country to believe his story,' Gifford tells Outdoor Life. 'It was our job to kind of pick apart that story and figure out the facts from lies.'
Roberts and Gifford explain how Alexander's story initially seemed credible, the clues they found that led them to believe otherwise, and how the DNR's investigation evolved over the course of 20245. We also discuss what it was like building a case against Alexander with all that added attention he generated online.
'I know there were a lot of people online and on social media thinking we were out to get [Alexander] and we set him up … and it's hard to sit back when you know that he's already confessed to all this, and you can't tell people why it's taken so long to do this investigation,' Roberts explained. 'Especially on a big deer case like this, when the whole world's watching.'

Their quiet dedication paid off. And now that the truth is out, the two game wardens can speak freely about how they cracked one of the biggest poaching cases of the century. Listen to this week's episode on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Marcus Morris Slams The Timberwolves' Defense Against SGA
Marcus Morris Slams The Timberwolves' Defense Against SGA originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Any team would struggle to play against a star like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He rightfully earned the 2024-25 regular season MVP on the back of a 68-win season as the Oklahoma City Thunder's best player. Advertisement He has a unique style on offense with his excellent control of his pace, which is a problem for most defenders. The Minnesota Timberwolves tried multiple defenders on him, but they were unable to crack the code. Credit: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images For most of the Western Conference Finals, Gilgeous-Alexander's primary matchups were his cousin Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jaden McDaniels, and Donte DiVincenzo. Sometimes, Anthony Edwards would defend him, but that was less often than expected. That was criticized by people like Marcus Morris, who wanted him to step up. Most of the time, Edwards had limited defensive responsibilities because he needed to spearhead the Timberwolves' offense. Advertisement Related: Chris Finch Reacts To Anthony Edwards Embracing All The Pressure As The Star Morris Disliked Alexander-Walker Defending Gilgeous-Alexander For Morris, he did not like the Timberwolves' defensive scheme of putting Alexander-Walker on the 2024-25 MVP. He felt Alexander-Walker did not have the same oomph as other defenders like Edwards and McDaniels. "Let me say this, his cousin guarding Shai might be the worst decision I've ever seen. Why would you put his cousin on him? That doesn't make sense to me because there's not gonna be any bad blood," Morris said on The Kevin O'Connor Show. McDaniels showed potential because, in Game 1, McDaniels held Gilgeous-Alexander to 2-of-13 shooting from the field in the first half. The MVP would bounce back and lead his team to the win, but McDaniels proved he could hang with OKC's superstar guard. Advertisement That did not remain consistent throughout the series because Gilgeous-Alexander kept facing different coverages. While it was difficult to score against them, he still found ways to get his rhythm. The Timberwolves Have More Room To Grow On Defense Despite being one of the league's best defensive teams, the Thunder were above the rest. Coach Chris Finch has the tools to be a top-tier defense, he needs to maximize everyone's talent. Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert make for a strong defensive foundation. At the same time, the rest of the team can improve, especially with Julius Randle and Mike Conley Jr. Advertisement Edwards, Alexander-Walker, and DiVincenzo are all solid defenders, but if they want to compete, they must be gritty like the Thunder. It will be a challenging level to reach, but the Timberwolves can do it. After two Western Conference Final exits, the Timberwolves know they are close to the top. They need to keep pushing and improving on aspects of their team that could be elevated. Packers Superstar Xavier McKinney Weighs In On Ongoing Jaire Alexander Saga
Packers Superstar Xavier McKinney Weighs In On Ongoing Jaire Alexander Saga originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Green Bay Packers have one of the most talented secondaries in the NFL. Xavier McKinney earned All-Pro honors last season and showed why he is one of the best at his position. Rookies Evan Williams and Javon Bullard have also made a notable impact—Williams, in particular, looked like a seasoned veteran whenever he was on the field. Advertisement The Packers addressed their cornerback position in free agency by signing Nate Hobbs. Still, the most pressing question of the position remains the future of Jaire Alexander. Back in February, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Green Bay was open to trade offers for the two-time All-Pro. More recently, The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reported that the Packers have offered Alexander a restructured contract, but no agreement has been reached between the sides so far. During the first week of OTAs, Packers safety Xavier McKinney spoke to the press about the ongoing situation between Alexander and the team. Packers QB Jordan Love (10) jokes around with cornerback Jaire Alexander (23) and safety Xavier McKinney (29) during 2024 organized team activities.© Mark Hoffman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK 'We would all like him back," McKinney said. "I talk to him every day, pretty much. Just trying to stay connected with him,' he added. "At the end of the day, I'm going to be behind him regardless of the situation going on. We've developed a relationship good enough off the field that I'm just like, 'Brah, I just want what's best for you and I'mma be there regardless,' so I've been vocal about that with him." Advertisement Early this offseason, McKinney posted an Instagram story of them finishing up a workout together, which got fans wondering if Alexander was still planning to stick around. However, it most likely had nothing to do with his future—just two great friends spending time together and putting in work. Jaire Alexander has missed 34 of Green Bay's last 68 games and carries the third-largest cap hit on the team for 2025. He managed to be productive last year despite missing significant time—giving up just a 56% completion rate and the lowest passer rating among Packers' cornerbacks. Still, if Alexander is going to return to Green Bay, it will be under a more team-friendly deal. It should be in everyone's best interest inside Lambeau Field for Alexander to return. All-Pro cornerbacks don't grow on trees, and a healthy Alexander paired with McKinney could make Green Bay's secondary one of the best in the league. Beyond that, his presence would have a significant impact on the development of Evan Williams and Javon Bullard. Community supports Santaquin family that lost father and son days apart
A Santiquin wife and mother says she wants their story to be one of love, not tragedy. Jenn Suiter was married to her husband for 25 years and was 'madly in love' with him. He was killed in a crash on I-15 in Payson just 10 days after the couple buried their son, who died by suicide. 'We are devastated, and there will always be a hole in my heart — but I will live for Christopher,' she said. Chris Suiter, 50, was killed when 19-year-old Riley Durst, of Draper, jumped the median cable on I-15 in Payson from the northbound lanes, entering southbound traffic. Durst and Chris Suiter both died on impact. 'I even named my company True Love Skin Care because (it was) inspired by our love,' Jenn Suiter said. Her son, Brian Suiter, suffered a traumatic brain injury after he broke his neck following a four-wheeling accident, which Jenn Suiter believes is the reason for his suicide. 'Traumatic brain injuries alter your brain in ways that we don't even understand. And when he took his life, I really just believed that it was just a symptom of his brain not working,' she said. Jenn Suiter said in a video statement that the world is filled with love and angels, and angels from both Earth and heaven have supported their family during these challenging times. 'If you knew two things about us, we would always say, 'Never give up, never surrender.' And my son was known for saying, 'Let's go,'' she said.
