LeBron James becomes first professional male athlete to have likeness depicted in a Ken doll

CNN09-04-2025
Basketball great LeBron James has become the first professional male athlete to have his likeness depicted in a Ken doll.
Mattel Inc. unveiled the LeBron Ken doll on Wednesday to kick off the toy manufacturer's 'Kenbassador' series. Last year, nine female athlete Barbies, including tennis star Venus Williams, were introduced.
'As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what's possible through hard work and dedication,' James said. 'Now, as an adult, I understand how vital it is for young people to have positive figures to look up to. That's why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is such an honor. It's an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.'
The LeBron doll wears sunglasses, headphones and an unzipped blue-and-white letterman's jacket with 'LJ' on the left breast, his number 23 on the right sleeve and Ohio and crown patches on the other. His first name is on the back with 'Just a kid from Akron' underneath. His T-shirt says 'We Are Family,' a nod to the LeBron James Family Foundation. His blue shoes, of course, are Nikes.
A post shared by Barbie (@barbie) The doll costs $75 and goes on sale Monday.
In an Associated Press-produced video of James seeing the doll for the first time, the 'King' expressed his approval, repeatedly calling the doll 'dope,' another word for 'cool.'
While looking it over, he put an 'I Promise' wristband on the doll's wrist and adjusted the strap on its fanny pack.
'OK, now we ready,' James said. 'I mean, he might need to do a little lifting. Legs look a little skinny. Little fraily little fellow. Nah, that's dope.'
Mattel senior vice president Krista Berger noted that Ken is Barbie's longtime best friend and supporter.
'We are excited to bring fans a new presentation of Ken that celebrates LeBron as a role model, his icon status, lasting impact on culture, and dedication to setting a positive example for the next generation to reach their limitless potential,' Berger said.

Stephen A. Smith says he and LeBron James have ‘no relationship' after bitter feud

Things did not end on a good note with Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James. During an appearance on former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas' 'Gil's Arena' podcast Friday, Smith said that he has zero contact with James and does not have any interest in ever speaking to him again. 'There's no situation and there's no relationship,' Smith said. 'He doesn't like me, and I don't like him.' Advertisement 3 Stephen A. NBAE via Getty Images Smith's comments stem from his feud with the 21-time All-Star earlier this year, when the two threw jabs at each other during various appearances on ESPN, which ultimately led to an in-person confrontation during a game in March. The ESPN sports personality added that other things happened between him and James 'behind the scenes' that the public does not know about. Advertisement 'All I would say is people don't know the things that have happened behind the scenes,' Smith said. 'Things that have been said, who they've been said to. The kind of things that have been engaged in in an effort to hurt me, along with contemporaries and others.' Smith also mentioned how he did not appreciate how James came at him on 'The Pat McAfee Show,' which airs directly after 'First Take' on ESPN. 3 Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James arguing with the ref in the second half of a game against the Knicks. 'I'm going to do my job. I'm going to cover the game of basketball. 'But if I never, ever speak to him again in life, that will be OK. And I'm good with it.'

Taylor Sheridan and Paramount are teaming up to launch a massive new film studio in Texas

'Yellowstone' creator Taylor Sheridan and Paramount are going big in Texas, joining forces to open a 450,000-square-foot production campus in Fort Worth, in a boost to the Lone Star State's growing entertainment economy. The venture, announced Wednesday, comes on the heels of Skydance's $8.4-billion takeover of Paramount and just as Texas has taken major initiatives to encourage more film production, having recently passed legislation increasing its film incentives program to $1.5 billion over the next 10 years. The massive production hub will be situated on the Alliance Texas campus, a 27,000-acre development owned by billionaire Ross Perot Jr.'s Hillwood, a commercial and residential real estate developer and a partner in the project along with Sheridan's and Paramount Television. It will be the largest studio facility in the state, according to officials, and marks another step toward Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's goal 'to make Texas the Film Capital of the World.' 'We are at a pivotal moment where Texas can become a global force in the film industry, and North Texas offers the location and resources to play a central role in this development,' said Hillwood President Mike Berry in a statement. The film campus is composed of two buildings with six sound stages that can support four large-scale productions simultaneously. It is expected to be the home base for such Sheridan-produced shows as 'Landman' and 'Lioness,' which currently film in Texas. The second season of 'Landman' has been filming at the facility since March. The move also marks a turning point for Sheridan's productions. In recent years, Sheridan, who grew up in Fort Worth, has filmed many of his hit television shows — including '1883' — across the state. His productions have brought in hundreds of millions of dollars to local businesses and a stream of tourists in what some in the industry began calling 'the Sheridan Effect.' 'SGS Studios isn't just about sound stages or incentives — it's about reclaiming the independence and grit that built this industry in the first place,' said Taylor Sheridan in statement about the new project.

SUPERMAN Director James Gunn Reveals "Complicated" but Kind Reason Why the Film Is Being Released Digitally So Soon — GeekTyrant

Fans were surprised by the news that Superman is getting a digital release that is just barely beyond the film's one month theatrical release date. While many are excited to be able to watch it again, or for the first time, in the comfort of their own home, the movie's release will likely cut into the profit of the box office sales. Not by much, but enough for a film this big, which is an unusual move from the studio. Director James Gunn addressed the surprising move in a recent interview with Screen Rant, where he explained: "Well, it's very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now. At the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn't get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that's really the reason for it." I think that's very cool of Gunn to consider the fans when making this decision. If his content is meant to be viewed in a certain order, it's nice that he isn't asking people to wait, but is instead making everything accessible. Superman will be available to watch digitally starting today, and Peacemaker season 2 starts on August 21st.
