North Korea's Kim Jong-un lauds restored destroyer, says more to be built, Asia News
SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended on Thursday (June 12) the launching ceremony of a warship that had been damaged upon its first attempt to launch, state media KCNA said on Friday.
Satellite images had shown ongoing repairs of the 5,000-ton destroyer that had partially capsized in May, after Kim called the accident a "criminal act" and ordered its restoration before a party meeting in June.
Kim said the restoration of the destroyer "had not delayed" North Korea's attempts to enhance naval power, and said plans were in place "to build two more 5,000-ton destroyers next year", KCNA said.
Kim called for the country to strengthen its maritime military presence in the Pacific Ocean in the face of what he said were provocations by the US and its allies, KCNA said.
"Soon, enemies will experience themselves how provocative and unpleasant it is to sit and watch the ships of an adversary run rampant on the fringes of sovereign waters," Kim said in a speech at the ceremony, according to KCNA.
"I'm sure that in the near future, the routes of our battleships... will be opened on the Pacific Ocean toward the outposts of aggression."

There was no sign of any push for a resolution or other action on June 16 by the 35-nation board, said the IAEA's top policymaking body. The UN and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. 'GHF, I think it's fair to say, has been, from a principled humanitarian standpoint, a failure,' Mr Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency Ocha, told a press briefing in Geneva. 'They are not doing what a humanitarian operation should do, which is providing aid to people where they are, in a safe and secure manner. 'We have the operation ready to roll with food and other supplies ready. We have them in the region, they are pre-cleared by the Israelis. 'We need the borders open to get in and of course we need the safety and security and some resemblance of law and order inside Gaza in order to distribute it.' An officially private effort with opaque funding and backed by Israel, GHF began operations on May 26 after Israel completely cut off supplies into Gaza for more than two months, sparking warnings of mass famine. GHF claimed on June 12 it had distributed nearly 2.6 million meals on that day and more than 18.6 million to date. The Palestinian Authority said internet and fixed-line communication services were down in Gaza on June 12 following an attack on the territory's last fibre optic cable which it blamed on Israel. 'There was and there still is a massive comms blackout,' said Mr Laerke. 'If there is no communication it really is damaging' for aid services, he said. 'There is an active effort to try to fix it, of course, and everybody is looking into that, because things kind of ground to a halt when these things happen.'
