Golden Apple Award: Paul Baltzer, Cathedral Prep
Erie's Cathedral Prep is where we found this week's Golden Apple teacher.
Paul Baltzer is a graduate of Albion's Northwestern High School, Edinboro University, and has been teaching for 12 years, the last decade at Prep.
The Golden Apple Award is in its 34th year of honoring teachers. So someday receiving it was sort of on Mr. Baltzer's professional bucket list.
'It's one of those things where in the back of my mind I've always wanted to have the recognition and today's the day,' Mr Baltzer said with excitement.
His students said Mr. Baltzer has an immense passion and dedication to teaching history in ways that make it compelling and enjoyable. To do that, the Golden Apple winner said school is never out, even for the teacher.
'You should keep trying, never give up, you're always improving. It's one of those things, even 10 years here, I'm always improving and trying to build up my knowledge base, how I'm delivering my material and just kind of like never giving up. Always working trying to reach the students,' he said.
This week's student nominator said Mr. Baltzer has changed his perspective on school, creating an environment where he can truly learn and grow.
'Mr. Baltzer has always been like really engaging with us. He's taught us in ways I've never been taught before. He's been able to help me understand the material which hasn't happened in a lot of my classes,' said Jacob Miles, a Prep junior.
A university professor who teaches teachers to teach gave Mr. Baltzer high marks.
'He's creating not only a positive learning environment but a sense of community. That's important all through the grades but especially when you get into like 11th and 12th grade because he's preparing these students to become better citizens,' said Mary Jo Melvin PhD, PennWest University.
National math textbook company Big Ideas Learning of Erie once again rewarded this week's Golden Apple winner.
'It's Mr. Baltzer's relationship with the students that give them the comfort to learn more. And that's really what's opening up their world to all the thing the school offers,' Damon Finazzo, a spokesman for Big Ideas Learning said.
Big Ideas Learning presented Mr. Baltzer with a check for $250.
The school year is quickly coming to a close, but if you'd like to see your favorite teacher be recognized with a Golden Apple award, you can

Sex Workers Are Sharing The Worst Parts Of Their Job That People Don't Think About, And It's Eye-Opening
I recently came across a Reddit thread where user u/Real_Drawing_530 asked, "Sex workers, what's the worst part of your job? Their responses were were very honest and revealing. Now imagine you gotta have sex with all those idiots." —bump_on_the_log 3."Hiding. Keeping it a secret." —None 4."The fantasy bookers. They inquire for the thrill. They attempt to sext, ask for additional information, and send nudes all with no intention of actually moving forward." —None 5."Being stood up." —3STUDIOS 6."The scrooges trying to haggle prices." —nobbidotcom 7."The worst part is the men and women who don't understand how much your time is worth and don't see you as an actual human. The worst part of it for me was the fear of being blindsided, tricked, or caught by law enforcement. I never did, but I'm pretty sure I actually had conversations with law enforcement multiple times, I just never directly incriminated myself, and they couldn't do anything. I'd ghost at the first hint of something being amiss. But that little twinge of uncontrollable fear of the what-if was the worst for me." —phoenix4278 15."No union, benefits, insurance, and little to no due process. I spend more time in hotels and on planes than in my own bed." —mygigidior 22."Definitely just that the randomness of the people that pay for your services inevitably means that while you meet some really nice people, you're also going to meet some truly awful, nasty, and difficult people." —UnknownDawn finally, "I'd say it's the way that we are treated by society and the stigma against us. People constantly speak over us with misguided and uneducated opinions, thinking they know what is best for us when they have absolutely no skin in the game. So many refuse to listen to us or take us seriously. These things contribute to a foundation for the puritanical laws surrounding our work, which create dangerous working conditions and put us in precarious situations." —ChampagneVixen_ If you are or were a sex worker, what's been the worst part of the job? Golden Apple End of Year Celebration Special: A look at spotlighted educators
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — As the 2024-25 school year comes to an end, News 8 is taking a look back at all of the teachers we have spotlighted this year through our Golden Apple series! Each week, News 8's Katrina Irwin surprises local teachers with a 'Golden Apple Award' for being an outstanding educator. Let's take a look back at this school year through the News 8 Golden Apple End of Year Celebration Special: All of the teachers News 8 surprised this year will also be receiving gift cards. For the past six years now, the Bill and Carol Van Dusen Fund through the Rochester Area Community Foundation has awarded these to the winning teachers as a way to give back and thank educators in the Rochester area. Each year, Roberts Wesleyan University gives out three $10,000 scholarships to students pursuing their career as a teacher in varying degrees: Traditional Undergrad Population: Ava Thompson is a freshman student from Brocton, New York — pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Adolescent Education: English 5-12. She is a member of Roberts Wesleyan University's Global Honors Program. Pathway to Teaching: Melissa Brown transferred in courses from California State University and will focus on Childhood Education – Students with Disabilities in Grades 1 to 6. She is currently a stay-at-home mom but would love to work at Honeoye Falls where her kids go to school. Master of Education Program for Initial Certification: L Wiltse currently works as a substitute teacher for Carthage Central School District but holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from SUNY Potsdam. They are looking to get their initial certification to educating childhood and students with disabilities. Sister Karlien Back just wrapped up her 45th year of teaching at Our Lady of Mercy! Fun fact: She taught News 8 WROC's Wendy Bello, Programming Coordinator Colleen Law, and News 8 First at 4 Anchor Natalie Kucko. Hear what she says is her secret to staying in the job all these years: News 8 would not be able to properly thank these teachers without help from a number of sponsors — one of those being support from Advantage Federal Credit Union throughout the year. Diane Miller stopped by the News 8 End of Year Celebration Special to talk about Advantage's participation: Thank you to everyone who nominated a teacher for the Golden Apple award! We'll see you next year! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
