Joseph Paintsil tallies twice as Galaxy rout Whitecaps

(Photo credit: Kelvin Kuo-Imagn Images) Joseph Paintsil recorded a brace, Matheus Nascimento scored an early goal and the struggling Los Angeles Galaxy turned in a stellar performance with a 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night at Carson, Calif. Paintsil had just one goal all season before putting two in the net in the second half for Los Angeles (2-13-6, 12 points). The defending MLS champion Galaxy are 2-1-2 over their past five matches following a record 16-match winless start to the season. Vancouver (11-4-5, 38 points) struggled without leading scorer Brian White (10 goals) and placed just one shot on target. White is playing for the U.S. men's national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Overall, the Galaxy had a 12-6 edge in shots and placed eight on target. Los Angeles' Novak Micovic made one save while registering his second shutout of the season. Yohei Takaoka had five stops for the Whitecaps, who have dropped three of their past four matches. The Galaxy got on the board in the second minute, and the sequence began with Edwin Cerrillo taking a long right-footed shot. Takaoka made the save, but the rebound went straight to Nascimento, who knocked a right-footed shot into the left corner of the net. Vancouver's only shot on goal came in the 48th minute when Pedro Vite took a left-footed blast. Micovic moved to his left to make a lunging save to keep the Galaxy ahead. The missed opportunity was magnified 12 minutes later when Paintsil sent a right-footed shot into the right corner of the net to make it 2-0. A foul in the box gave Paintsil a penalty-kick chance in the 77th minute, and he placed a right-footed shot to the left portion of the net as Takaoka dove to his right. Paintsil also had a solid opportunity in the 21st minute, but his right-footed blast from the top of the box was stopped by Takaoka. Vancouver substitute Jayden Nelson received his second yellow card and was sent off in second-half stoppage time. Paintsil had 10 goals and 10 assists in a stellar campaign last year for the Galaxy, but he has struggled to find the net this season. --Field Level Media

Galaxy desperate for points entering visit from Whitecaps

(Photo credit: David Gonzales-Imagn Images) The Los Angeles Galaxy are running out of time to make a dash up the Western Conference standings. The defending MLS champion Galaxy have won just 5 percent of their matches this season entering Friday's clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps in Carson, Calif. MLS-worst Los Angeles (1-13-6, 9 points) has earned points in three of its last four matches (1-1-2) -- the Galaxy tied the San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 at Stanford Stadium last Saturday -- but the hole is particularly deep. 'I think we have to look at every game as of the utmost importance,' Galaxy coach Greg Vanney told reporters. 'I look at the last eight games, since the New York game (a 7-0 loss on May 10), five of those were on the road. I feel like we squandered nine points in those games. 'I think we should have taken 15 because we were either in leading positions in the last minutes of the game or in the event of the other night,' he continued, 'we had eight big chances that we don't take and I feel like we've got to figure out as a group and understand, as a group, to take the points that we deserve on the night.' Los Angeles fell behind early against San Jose before Marco Reus scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Reus has four goals and is tied for the team lead with Christian Ramirez. The Galaxy look to avenge a 2-1 loss at Vancouver on March 2. Whitecaps star Brian White scored the winner in the 87th minute of that match. White has a team-high 10 goals. Vancouver (11-3-5, 38 points) resides in second place in the West after losing consecutive games to the Columbus Crew and San Diego FC last month. Vancouver continues to play without star Ryan Gauld due to a knee injury. Gauld scored 30 goals over the past three MLS seasons. He had one in three matches this season but last played on March 8. Progress has been extremely slow but Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen maintains hope the midfielder will return later this season. 'I will not expect him to be out for the season,' Sorensen told reporters. 'We hope that he'll be back sooner than later, but we've said that many times. I can't say anything really decisive about it.' This is the Whitecaps' second game in Los Angeles in six days. Vancouver beat LAFC 1-0 last Sunday. Emmanuel Sabbi scored the goal in the 20th minute. --Field Level Media

Roughriders Mailbag: West favourites? Negotiation list? 'Drive-ending' bombs?

Welcome to another edition of the Roughriders Mailbag where we answer questions readers have about the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Article content After a 4-0 start to the 2025 season, the Green and White have wrapped up their first bye week of the season and are set to host the Calgary Stampeders on Friday. Article content Article content Before we look ahead to that game, let's answer some reader-submitted questions surrounding the Roughriders entering Week 6: Article content At this point, yes, the Roughriders are the West Division favourites. Especially after what went down on Thursday night. Article content In fact, the Roughriders might have increased their odds of being the favourites without even playing this week. Article content At 4-0, the Roughriders have gotten off to a good start and look to be contenders this season after falling in the West final last year against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Article content As for Winnipeg, after a 3-0 start, the Blue and Gold lost 37-16 to the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday night in a game that certainly didn't make the five-time defending West Division champions look like they have in recent years. Article content While it's a long season, at this point, Saskatchewan is the favourite followed by Winnipeg. Or would Calgary now be second considering they are also 3-1 and just beat Winnipeg. When B.C. has a healthy Nathan Rourke, they will be better. And then there's Edmonton. Article content While Saskatchewan may be considered the favourite, since the Bombers are five-time defending West division champs, all roads lead through Winnipeg when it comes to claiming the West Division. I get that it's a new team every year but Saskatchewan needs to find a way to beat Winnipeg in the playoffs, which is something they haven't been able to do in years. Article content The playoffs will decide who advances to the Grey Cup but there are a few measuring-stick games coming up for the Riders. After Calgary in Week 6, the Riders head to B.C. in Week 7. Saskatchewan will then host Edmonton before visiting the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 2, which could be a big test for the Riders. Article content Article content Following games against Hamilton and Calgary, we then finally get the Riders-Bombers matchup on Labour Day followed by the rematch the following week, which is a series that could determine who finishes first in the division. Article content By then, we'll have a better indication of who the favourite is, but at this point, the Roughriders are definitely the favourites. And they even gained some steam during the bye week.
