They also killed key leaders in the country's governing theocracy.
Israel said hundreds of airstrikes over the past two days killed nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran's nuclear programme, in addition to several top generals. Iran's UN ambassador said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded.

The US and Iran had been scheduled to hold their sixth round of indirect talks over Iran's nuclear programme on Sunday in Oman, but Oman's foreign minister said the meeting was cancelled after Israel's strikes.
First responders were looking for survivors and clearing the remnants of a missile which fell on a neighbourhood outside Tel Aviv early on Sunday morning.
Responders used a drone to look for survivors in areas that were too hard to access.

The Israeli military said early on Sunday it had targeted Iran's Defence Ministry headquarters in Tehran as well as sites it alleged were associated with Iran's nuclear programme around Tehran.
It alleged the sites were 'related to the Iranian regime's nuclear weapons project'.
US intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency have repeatedly said Iran was not pursuing a nuclear weapon before Israel unleashed its campaign of airstrikes on Friday.
Three drones were launched toward a base housing US forces in Iraq following Israel's strikes on Iran, a US military official and a second US official said on Saturday.
Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.
The drones were shot down, the officials said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack on Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq.

A network of powerful Iran-backed militias in Iraq has remained mostly quiet amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
In the past, the militias had periodically attacked US bases in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for Washington's support for Israel in its war against the Iran-allied Hamas militant group in Gaza.
Also on Saturday, for the second day, supporters of armed factions in Iraq demonstrated in central Baghdad to denounce the Israeli bombing of Iran.
The protesters did not attempt to breach the heavily fortified Green Zone where the US Embassy is located.

Iran v Israel LIVE: Killing Iran's Ayatollah ‘not off limits' for Israel as new strikes hit Tehran after night of hell

ISRAEL has said it does not rule out targeting Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as it continues to bomb Iran's nuclear facilites. It comes as Tel Aviv reportedly carried out fresh strikes on Tehran this moning after the archenemies traded blows in a third consecutive night of devastation. 6 6 6 6 6 6 Both sides have been fighting after Israel launched "pre-emptive strikes" it said were designed to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Israel has now said Iran's theocratic dictator Khamenei is not "off limits" from targeting as it continues its air bombing in the Islamic republic. Sources from Tel Aviv told Wall Street Journal that it was not ruling out striking any potential targets to obliterate Iran's nuclear capabilites - including Khamenei. It comes as at least 15 people have been killed and over 385 injured after Iran launched missiles at Israel last night Iranian missiles pounded cities, while Tehran was left "burning" after Israel focused attacks on oil fields and military sites. US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social - and called on both sides to make a deal. But he also fired a warning to Iran if they were to hit US bases in the region. He wrote: "We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!' At least 70 missiles across two waves targeted Israel's port city of Haifa alongside Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Rehovot. At least 12 people, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed in the overnight blitz. Three people were killed during Iran's attack early yesterday. Residential buildings were turned to rubble as ballistic missiles tore through the night sky - overwhelming air defence systems such as the Iron Dome. And while Israeli residents hunkered in bunkers, the country's military continued strikes against Iran. IDF fighter jets attacked targets in Tehran, including Iran 's Ministry of Defence and nuclear facilities. Massive fires were also seen raging in Tehran's oil depots after Tel Aviv conducted rounds of airstrikes. Footage online shows the Shahran oil depot up in flames after a pinpoint strike. Israeli Minister of Defence Israel Katz said: "Tehran is burning." The Iranians said 78 people were killed there on the first day of Israel's campaign, and scores more on the second, including children. Later on in the evening, Iran fired another 50 missiles and drones into central Israel. The UK Foreign Office has today warned against all travel to Israel amid fears of a broader conflict. Trump warned Tehran would experience "the full strength" of the US military if it attacks the US bases in the Middle East. Iran vowed to strike US, UK and French military bases in the region if they step in to try and defend Israel. Tehran warned it would target military bases and ships located in the region if the countries provided any support to Israel. Trump said: "If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before." Israel's allies across the world have in the past helped Tel Aviv shoot down missiles fired from Iran during previous clashes between the two enemy powers. Iran and Israel sit on the brink of a full-scale war after Tel Aviv accused Tehran of trying to develop a nuclear bomb, launching a massive wave of pre-emptive strikes on Friday. How conflict between Israel and Iran has unfolded over three days

By Megan Harwood-Baynes, news reporter The conflict between Israel and Iran - once played out in a series of proxy wars - has escalated. On Friday morning, explosions hit Tehran as Israel carried out a major attack on its nuclear capabilities. Iran threatened "severe punishment" and quickly retaliated with a wave of missiles. Here we plot a timeline of how the conflict has unfolded over the last three days... Timings below are approximations. They are written in local Israeli time, which is two hours ahead of the UK, unless otherwise specified. 13 June 2025 Israel attacks Iran in the early hours of Friday morning 3.30am, local time (1.30am BST): Explosions are heard in Tehran. Israel says it has launched dozens of airstrikes against military targets inside Iran, including its nuclear facilities. Israel's defence minister declares a state of emergency at home and warns citizens to prepare for retaliatory attacks. 3.45am: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announces Operation Rising Lion. He claims Iran has recently taken steps to weaponise enriched uranium, which could be used to make nuclear weapons. 0:59 Iranian state media goes on to report the head of the country's powerful Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, has been killed. Nuclear scientist Fereydoun Abbasi is dead, as is theoretical physicist Dr Mohammed Mehdi Tehranchi and Major General Gholam Ali Rashid. 6am: A statement is released by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in which he warns Israel of "severe punishment" for the attacks. 6.53am: Israel's president puts out a statement saying the airstrikes were vital. He says Iran is at "the helm of a global terror empire" and wants to "annihilate" his country. 8am: Israel says Iran has launched more than 100 drones. 8.49am (6.49am BST): Sir Keir Starmer urges all parties to "step back and reduce tensions urgently". Daylight breaks across the Middle East Iran fires more drones at Israel Iran continues to retaliate. Flights around the Middle East are cancelled and delayed. The extent of the attacks is becoming clear - Israel's initial blitz has hit the country's main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guards in Tehran. 10am (8am BST): British warplanes are not helping defend Israel's skies from any counterattacks, it is confirmed. Midday: Iran launches a retaliatory volley of more than 100 drones towards Israel - they will take several hours to make the journey. 0:44 1pm: Donald Trump writes a lengthy post on Truth Social urging Iran to come to a deal with the US and agree not to pursue a nuclear weapon. "No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. God Bless You All!" he writes. In a later interview with ABC, he calls the Israeli strikes "excellent". It's now more than 12 hours since the first wave of attacks At 3pm, Iranian media gives the first unofficial death toll Nournews says 78 people were killed and 329 injured in Tehran, the capital. 5pm: Israel says it is still attacking targets in Iranian territory. Footage shared by the IDF on Telegram claims to show strikes on Iranian surface-to-surface missiles and launchers. 7pm: Explosions are heard in the area of the Fordow nuclear site near Qom, south of Tehran, according to Iranian news agency Fars. Israel says it is continuing its "offensive effort". Just before 9pm, Israel confirms it has completed an attack on another nuclear site. 9pm: An incoming missile alert is sent to Israeli residents. At the same time, Iran's supreme leader posts on X saying that Israel has initiated a war and that Tehran will not allow it to conduct such tacks without grave consequences. Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it carried out attacks against "dozens of targets, military centres and airbases". 10pm: Medics say five people have been wounded in Iran's attack on Israel. Half an hour later, the military tells Israelis they can leave air raid shelters, but they must stay near them in case of further attacks. Israel's defence minister says Iran has "crossed red lines" after it "dared to fire missiles at civilian population concentrations". Countries gather for talks As tensions rise, the United Nations Security Council meets 11pm (5pm in New York): The United Nations Security Council holds a meeting in New York on rising tensions between the two countries. The UK's representative says: "We urge all parties to urgently step back, show restraint and reduce tensions." Iran's representative to the UN then says Israel's strikes on Iran have killed 78 people and injured more than 320, most of them civilians. Amir-Saeid Iravani accuses the US of providing intelligence and political support for Israel's strikes on Iran. 14 June 2025 It is now almost 24 hours since fighting began 1am: A loud boom is heard in Jerusalem. Air raid sirens sound in the city, as well as in Tel Aviv. 0:30 5am: Israel says a new wave of missiles has been launched from Iran, and that it is working to intercept them. It later says 21 have been hurt in the rocket strike. Fighting enters a second day Neither side shows signs of backing down 8am: Alerts are activated across Israel, warning of incoming Iranian drones. Iran says 20 children are among those killed in Israeli strikes. Iran warns the strikes will continue, with a senior military official quoted as saying conflict will spread to US bases in the region over the coming days. Israel says three people have died, and around 53 have been hurt across multiple cities. It claims "dozens" of jets flew over Tehran overnight. Midday (10am BST): Iran warns UK, US and France not to help Israel stop its strikes on the country, threatening to retaliate if they do. 2pm: Iran says three more nuclear scientists have been killed. At the same time, five people are arrested in Iran for "collaborating with Israel". This is what we know about those who were targeted 4pm: Iran says it is considering closing the world's most important shipping route for international oil. Blocking the route could push the price of oil from £55 a barrel to more than £74. 8pm (6pm BST): The UK announces it is "moving jets" to the Middle East. RAF and military assets will now be sent to the country, despite warnings from Iran that they could be targeted. 11pm: The IDF warns citizens to remain close to protected spaces. 15 June 2025 A third full night of fighting begins Midnight: Israeli police say there are several reports from civilians of explosions in northern Israel. The country later reports 14 people have been injured. 1am (7pm in Washington DC): Donald Trump says he spoke with Vladimir Putin about Iran in a call. The US leader said the Russian president called him to wish him a happy birthday and shared his opinion that "this war in Israel-Iran should end". 4:07 2am: The IDF says it is operating to intercept missiles launched from Iran. It says its air force is striking military targets in Tehran. 3am: Israel says a new barrage of Iranian missiles have been fired towards the country. It activates sirens a short while later following strikes from Iran and now Yemen. 4am: An eight-storey residential building in Tel Aviv is hit, Israeli authorities say, killing at least one person. The death toll from the night eventually rises to 13, with more than 200 injured. 8am (1am in Washington DC): Trump threatens to respond to any attack by Iran on the US with "the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces". In a post on Truth Social, he says the US had "nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight". 10am: An evacuation warning is issued to all Iranian civilians living near weapon facilities. 2pm (Midday BST): The UK Foreign Office warns against all travel to Israel.

Israel hits Iran's energy industry and defence ministry as conflict escalates

Israel attacked Iran's energy industry and defence ministry on the third day of an escalating conflict, as several Iranian missiles evaded Israeli air defences to hit a refinery and rip through a high-rise apartment block south of Tel Aviv. As fuel depots outside Tehran blazed, Donald Trump presided over the US's biggest military parade in decades. He later said the arsenal on display could be deployed against Iran if it targeted American assets. The US president said in a social media post: 'If we are attacked in any way shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.' There is little question that Israel would like the US to join its campaign. Only American weapons can attempt to reach parts of the Iranian project like the Fordow enrichment plant, which is buried deep under a mountain. But while Iran has called off talks with the US on the future of its nuclear programme, and accused Washington of being Israel's 'partner' in the offensive launched on Friday, it has held off attacking US bases, embassies or other targets. With most of its top military echelon assassinated, Israel claiming domination of Iranian airspace from western Iran to Tehran, and several key nuclear sites seriously damaged, the regime in Tehran now faces a potentially existential threat. Perhaps in an appeal to Trump's promotion of himself as the ultimate dealmaker, and his election pitch that he would end America's decades of overseas wars, Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, signalled that Iran was open to attempts to de-escalate. If Israeli strikes on Iran stopped, 'our responses will also stop', he said. Trump had earlier posted: 'We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!' The US is already trying to promote an exchange of messages with Iran to 'calm tensions' with Israel, although the effort falls short of formal mediation, the Haaretz newspaper reported quoting foreign sources. Trump has spoken about the war with Iranian ally Vladimir Putin, and the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, who has been in direct contact with the Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, since Friday. G7 leaders flying to Canada for a summit that starts on Sunday are likely to try and use their time with Trump to argue against escalation. Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, called the leader of Oman, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, who had been due to host US-Iran talks, a government spokesperson said. They discussed the importance of halting the conflict and stopping Iran getting nuclear weapons. For Israel, Saturday night was the bloodiest of the conflict, despite its success in knocking out much of Iran's military hierarchy and parts of its missile systems over the previous day. Ten people were killed by Iranian strikes on residential buildings, including at least three children, and more than 200 people were injured. Rescuers spent Sunday searching for at least four people missing in the rubble of an apartment block in Bat Yam south of Tel Aviv. An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that even advanced air defences could not stop every missile when Iran launched large barrages, as it did on Saturday night. 'In these amounts, of hundreds of projectiles, sadly there will be hits,' the official said. 'Even the greatest aerial defence system doesn't get to 100%.' Benjamin Netanyahu visited the site of the strike on Sunday to see the damage and meet rescue workers. The Israeli prime minister said: 'Iran will pay a very heavy price for the premeditated murder of civilians, women and children.' Israeli attacks on Iran have killed dozens of civilians since Friday, including at least 30 children who died when a missile brought down a high-rise apartment building in Tehran on Saturday. Israel's military says it does not intentionally target civilians. Iran deployed about 70 missiles overnight, and dozens of drones, although Israel has a higher success rate intercepting those slower-moving projectiles. Over two nights, Iran fired more than 200 missiles at Israel, the official said, and between 20 and 24 of them evaded air defences. One of those appeared to target a refinery in the northern city of Haifa. In a statement to the Tel Aviv stock exchange, Bazan group said there were no injuries at its plant but pipelines and transmission lines were damaged forcing some facilities to shut down. Netanyahu said he ordered the pre-emptive operation because Iranian progress towards developing nuclear weapons posed a critical security threat. After taking out the top of the military hierarchy and vital nuclear scientists, as well as striking key parts of the nuclear programme, Israel now appears to be widening its campaign. It hit energy facilities overnight including an oil depot near Tehran that blazed through the night and a refinery in Bushehr province on the Gulf, and has told people living near arms factories in Iran to evacuate their homes. An Israeli military official said in the coming days there would be more attacks on 'dual use' facilities, and strikes to prevent Iran expanding its stockpile of missiles, estimated to stand at about 2,000 before Friday.
