Researchers who question mainstream climate science join DOE

E&E News10-07-2025
Three researchers who have challenged mainstream scientific views of climate change have joined Energy Secretary Chris Wright's office, according to the Department of Energy's internal registry.
Among the new additions is Steve Koonin, an Obama-era DOE undersecretary who helped develop President Donald Trump's plan to challenge climate science during his first stint in the White House. Koonin is listed as a special government employee.
Koonin, who is also a professor at New York University and former top scientist at BP, has long pushed to conduct a 'red team, blue team' review of climate science, pitting two groups of researchers against each other to debate scientific reports such as the National Climate Assessment.

Instead of trying to remove Russian oil from the global market, something that would have shaken economies worldwide, Washington quietly urged countries such as India to keep buying it—as long as Moscow was forced to sell at a steep discount. Its strategy of capping the price below market rate, developed when a barrel of crude neared $120, proved a boon for buyers. Top among them were India and China. But it failed to derail the Russian economy or dent President Vladimir Putin's ambitions to conquer Ukraine.

How Texas Democrats' walkout has launched a fight across the US over political maps

AUSTIN, Texas — A weeklong walkout by Texas House Democrats is blocking redrawn congressional maps sought by President Donald Trump and put in motion a broadening fight across the U.S. over redistricting. There is still no swift end in sight to the standoff that has scattered dozens of Texas Democrats to Illinois, New York and California, where they have been given a warm reception by blue state governors and national party leaders.
