Pocklington rugby charity given King's Award for Voluntary Service
The award was formally presented on Friday, May 9 by HM Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Mr James Dick OBE, at an event at Burnby Hall attended by trustees, volunteers, and supporters.
Pocklington Rugby in the Community representatives also celebrated the accolade at a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, May 7.
The charity, which aims to promote activities that improve health, wellness, and community spirit in Pocklington, has managed a number of initiatives during the past six years.
These include the Friday Social, a monthly event for those feeling isolated; a family fun day called Pockdown; and a recently-introduced monthly Parkinson's drop-in group.
Andy Bowden, chair of trustees for the charity, said: "This award is a true reflection of the incredible dedication of every volunteer and supporter who has helped make Pocklington Rugby in the Community what it is today.
"We are honoured to receive this recognition and will continue to work tirelessly to make a positive impact in Pocklington.
"Thank you to the Lord-Lieutenant, his team, our volunteers, and everyone who attended Friday's presentation - it was a proud moment for us all."
Mr Dick, the Lord-Lieutenant, said: "I was delighted to present the King's Award for Voluntary Service to Pocklington Rugby in the Community.
"The support they give their local community is outstanding and they are very deserving of the award.
"Congratulations to all the volunteers, supporters, and sponsors on receiving this recognition."
The King's Award for Voluntary Service, created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty the late Queen's Golden Jubilee, recognises outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities.
It is the highest accolade for volunteer groups across the nation, and may be seen as equivalent to an MBE.

Over 100 years later, it's a viral TikTok darling and an Amazon bestseller with over 47,000 5-star weeder's handle is 45 inches long, and the head has a footpad that you step on to push the tool into the ground, so you can pull out weeds without needing to bend down or kneel in the dirt. This is especially handy for people with mobility issues, arthritis, carpal tunnel, or a large area they need to cover because of how quickly it head's four-claw design is best for working on softer soil, according to the brand, but it can remove weeds down to their roots, something reviewers appreciate. 'The Tooth Fairy sticks to a budget:' Kids are finding less under their pillows for lost teeth
Times are tough, even for kids. What they're receiving for each tooth they're putting under their pillows has fallen 14% to $5.01 from $5.84 last year, marking one of the most significant year-over-year declines in Tooth Fairy giving since Delta Dental began its annual "Original Tooth Fairy Poll" 27 years ago. The Tooth Fairy is also scaling back on additional gifts. Only 1 in 6 children (16%) receive both money and 'something else,' down from 21% in 2024. Kids may not be happy about the drop in how much money they're getting for each tooth, but their parents still believe the Tooth Fairy helps educate their children about the value of money. The Tooth Fairy's thriftiness these days shows 'even the Tooth Fairy sticks to a budget,' Delta Dental said in a release. Besides, kids should take heart that the trend for the value of a tooth has generally been up. Since the poll's inception in 1998, the average cash gift left by the Tooth Fairy has increased 285% from $1.30 to $5.01 per tooth. Are all teeth created equally? The first lost tooth is typically the most valuable, the survey of 1,000 parents of children ages 6 to 12 in January showed. One-third of parents say the Tooth Fairy spends more on their child's first tooth. However, the Tooth Fairy's also cut back here, with the average value dropping 12% to $6.24 from $7.09 over the past year. How busy is the Tooth Fairy? The Tooth Fairy is busier than ever. She's visited more than 8 in 10 homes (83%) across the country, up from 78% in 2024. That's great news for kids even if their haul per tooth has shrunk, Delta Dental said. Nearly one-quarter of children (23%) consider the Tooth Fairy's visit one of their favorite surprises of the year, the poll said. "We're pleased to see the Tooth Fairy's wings have been in overdrive this year, as each visit is (also) an opportunity to spark conversations with children about strong oral health care practices," said Gabriella Ferroni, senior director, strategic communications, for the Delta Dental Plans Association. Does a drop in tooth value signal bad economic times? Historically, the Original Tooth Fairy Poll has mirrored the economy's overall direction, tracking with the trends of the broad Standard & Poor's 500 Index, Delta Dental said. However, since 2023, the two have diverged. Over the past year, the average value of a single lost tooth decreased 14%, while the S&P 500 rose 26% during the same period, Delta Dental said. Do kids everywhere get the same amount per tooth? Where kids live can make a big difference in how much they get for their teeth, the poll showed. Never lose a sock again — this expert-approved laundry hack costs nothing and keeps them all in one place
Once you've put your socks in the washing machine, there's a good chance you'll never see one of them again. The missing sock conundrum is a mystery as old as time. Where do they go? While experts have yet to solve that age-old dilemma, they do have advice on how to save your socks from the perilous journey from your laundry basket to your dryer. And better yet, this hack is totally free. According to Gail Downie, head of garment technology at M&S, the solution is to put all your socks inside a pillowcase before putting them through the wash. And it's such a simple solution, I'm shocked I never thought of it sooner. By placing your dirty socks in a pillowcase before putting them through the wash, they'll stand a much better chance of making it out as a pair. 'Washing your socks and tights in a mesh wash bag or pillowcase keeps them together," says Downie. If you've not got a spare pillowcase, or you want a bag with a zip closure, this three-piece set of mesh laundry bags will also do a great job of keeping your delicates all in one place. Because socks are delicate, they can also become easily damaged when you put them through the machine with more abrasive items, such as bras with underwires, or pants with zippers. I always find the odd sock stuck in my washing machine seal when I clean it, and it's usually sodden and a little stinky. So keeping them all in one place, will ensure they get the clean they need, without going missing or getting wedged in inconvenient locations. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. It's not just socks that you can wash in a pillowcase. "Always separate more delicate pieces like satin and silk dresses from heavy clothing such as jeans," says Downie. "Washing them in a mesh bag or pillowcase protects them." "You can also use this trick for machine washable shoes." That could include sneakers or canvas shoes, but Downie warns "it's always best to wash footwear separately so that any dirt doesn't transfer."
