Toulouse's Ntamack suffers concussion in Top 14, Willemse nears exit

France 2410-05-2025

Ntamack went off after 19 minutes in reigning French and European champions Toulouse's match against Toulon, and was replaced by Paul Graou following an alert from his connected mouthguard.
Ntamack did not return to the pitch, the 26-year-old having failed the concussion protocol procedure.
Television footage showed the France international returning directly to the locker room at Marseille's Velodrome stadium.
Since November, mouthguards have been worn by all players in the Top 14.
In the event of a violent impact, the mouthguard sends an alert signal.
The affected player then goes off to undergo a protocol to determine if he has indeed suffered a concussion.
Meanwhile, Montpellier's France lock Willemse, who has suffered repeated concussions, is unlikely to play again with the club and is heading towards the end of his career, club president Mohed Altrad told French radio on Saturday.
"He's giving signs that he's going to retire," Altrad said when asked about the player's future.
"Wisely, his contract is up anyway."
Willemse, 32, suffered a concussion against Stade Francais last October, his sixth in the space of a year, just as he was returning after several months out following another head injury.
Since October, the South Africa-born player, who has 32 caps for France, has not even returned to training, his lay-off being regularly extended by specialised doctors who are treating him.

Retired great Hakuho says leaving sumo after bullying scandal

"It has been 25 years of being loved by sumo and loving sumo," the Mongolian-born Hakuho told reporters, confirming that he was "leaving the Japan Sumo Association". He won a record 45 tournaments before retiring from competition in 2021 to coach wrestlers, but his stable was indefinitely shut in April last year. Hakuho was handed an embarrassing demotion for failing to control the behaviour of Hokuseiho, who allegedly punched his lower-ranked stablemates and stole money from them. Hakuho, 40, said Monday he "cried a lot" over the situation. Japanese media reports said last week that the Japan Sumo Association, which declined to comment at the time, had accepted Hakuho's resignation. Hakuho said Monday he was "moving on to a new dream" and that in the future "I intend to focus on projects to expand sumo to the world". "Sumo was originally a shinto ritual to commemorate peace, national security and a good harvest," he said. Born Munkhbat Davaajargal, Hakuho moved to Japan aged 15 and made his sumo debut in 2001. He won his first top-division title in 2006 and went on to fight at the sport's highest rank of yokozuna more times than anyone in history. © 2025 AFP

Portugal beats Spain in penalty shootout to win The Nations league

Portugal defeated Spain in penalty kicks 5- 3 to win the UEFA Nations League final late on Sunday after both sides failed to score in extra time following a showdown that ended 2-2. After Nuno Mendes, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and Goncalo Ramos all smoothly scored their penalties, Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Spain's Álvaro Morata's spot kick before Neves converted his team's fifth to seal the win. The win marks the second Nations League trophy for Portugal after lifting the inaugural edition in 2019. Its victory against Spain, the reigning European champions, was hard-fought, as the Seleção had come back twice from behind. Cristiano Ronaldo sent the match to extra time when he equalised in the 61st minute with his record-extending 138th goal for Portugal. The 40-year-old Ronaldo went off to a standing ovation and a hug from coach Roberto Martínez in the 88th. The keenly contested final seemed destined for Spain after Mikel Oyarzabal had given Spain a 2-1 halftime lead. Oyarzabal squeezed the ball past Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the 45th minute after Pedri played him through on goal. It was also Spain who drew the first blood after Martin Zubimendi broke the deadlock in the 21st minute with a tap-in when Portugal's defence failed to deal with Lamine Yamal's cross. Five minutes later, Portugal responded with Nuno Mendes levelling by drilling a low shot inside the far post. Lamine Yamal, the Spanish sensation and favourite to win the Ballon d'Or, was mostly marked out of the game by Portugal full-back Mendes, ensuring Yamal could pose no major threat before being subbed off in extra time. Earlier on Sunday, Kylian Mbappé led France to defeat host Germany 2-0 in Stuttgart, securing third place. The Real Madrid forward helped Les Bleus bounce back from a sluggish first half by scoring one goal and setting up another for Michael Olise. The goal was Mbappe's 50th for France in international competition.
