Kia Telluride May Add Game-Changing 600-Mile EREV Option
The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade have been two of the most respected and successful three-row crossovers since they launched a couple of years ago. The Palisade came first, which is why it's the first of the two to receive a second generation. However, Hyundai and Kia often develop related models in unison, and the all-new Telluride won't be far behind. According to a report by the South Korean newspaper Maeil Business, the next Telluride could have a bold new Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) powertrain, which could be a game-changer for the segment. Kia is said to be evaluating this powertrain for its three-row SUV. Announced by Kia earlier this year at the 2025 Kia CEO Investor Day, the EREV powertrain features electric motors that power the wheels. There is also a gas engine - in this case, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder - but it's used exclusively as a generator to recharge the batteries. This allows the vehicle to function as a normal EV for the most part, while the gas engine completely eliminates range anxiety by keeping the batteries charged. In fact, a range of over 600 miles is possible with this setup, which far surpasses the maximum range of today's modern EVs. For instance, the current Kia EV9 three-row electric SUV can only manage up to 304 miles on a full charge. According to the report, the EREV system is said to be under consideration for the next Telluride, which would complement the more conventional hybrid that's also expected for the next Telluride. We already know the new Palisade is available with a 329-horsepower powertrain, and since the two SUVs have always been closely related, we expect the same powertrain in the new Telluride. The potential combination of a gas model, a new hybrid, and an EREV for the next Telluride would represent the most diverse range of powertrains in a single three-row SUV model. Kia's future EREV would not be the first powertrain of its kind. The discontinued BMW i3 REx had a gas range extender powertrain to increase range, while a more modern example is the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, which has a targeted range of 690 miles, thanks to its 3.6-liter V6 that acts as a generator. However, a possible Kia Telluride EREV would be one of the first SUVs and three-row models to incorporate such a powertrain. Performance and powertrains aside, the next Kia Telluride has already been spied. The details remain hidden, but we expect a boxier look than the current model and visual cues that are shared with the futuristic EV9. We expect the new Telluride to be unveiled before the end of 2025. Hopefully, Kia will confirm the possibility of the EREV powertrain as an option by then. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. Founders: Ritu Narayan (CEO), Vivek Garg, Abhishek GargLaunched: 2015Headquarters: Redwood City, CaliforniaFunding: $340.6 million (PitchBook)Valuation: $1.3 billion (PitchBook)Key Technologies: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, machine learningIndustry: TransportationPrevious appearances on Disruptor 50 list: 2 (No. 31 in 2024) Parents can say goodbye to the days of their child missing the school bus. Through an EV school bus meets Uber-ride convenience hybrid transportation business model, Zum is using technology to disrupt a student transportation market estimated to be worth as much as $50 billion. With the use of AI and cloud computing, Zum has created a mobile application with live bus maps that allow parents to know when the school bus is coming, when their child has arrived at school and when their child is coming home. This application also serves as a means of communication between parents and drivers regarding route changes, student ride cancellations and snow days. On top of these safety and convenience measures, Zum's EV buses have helped offset 8.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Yet, what makes Zum's EV model even more appealing to schools is its ability to save money that can be put back toward the classroom, as EVs cut energy costs by 80% and maintenance costs by 60%, according to Zum's data. Last August, Zum launched the first-ever all-electric school bus fleet in the country with the Oakland Unified School District. Through a partnership with Pacific Gas & Electric, Zum's district-wide fleet utilizes V2G (vehicle to grid) bidirectional charging, which allows buses to return energy to electrical grids. While the initial cost of an EV school bus is roughly two to three times the cost of their diesel counterparts, the V2G model enables electric fleets to be more cost-effective for schools in the long run. School districts can expect to gain over $100,000 in lifetime fuel and maintenance savings with an electric bus, according to the Electric School Bus Initiative. Since Zum's launch in 2015, the company has worked with 4,000 schools across 14 states. Narayan's initial vision for Zum reflected that of a fleet of private drivers transporting kids to and from school. Yet, when she went to pitch Zum to schools in the Bay Area, Narayan was met with schools offering to utilize Zum in the form of a privatized school bus fleet. Adjusting her business model to compete against companies like First Student and Student Transportation of America that serve a customer base of more than 25 million U.S. students, Narayan is continuing to chip away at the market opportunity. While the government has been a tailwind in recent years, it may now be an impediment to growth. Zum secured a conditional commitment for a $700 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy in early January, a program that has been targeted by the Trump administration, especially loans finalized in the waning days of the Biden administration. It also received $58 million from the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program. The Trump administration's budget cuts in renewable energy and attempts to freeze EV charging funds introduce new hurdles.

2026 Cadillac Optiq-V First Look: 519 Horsepower and 3.5 Seconds to 60 MPH
With 219 horsepower over the standard Optiq, Cadillac claims that its new Optiq-V can hit 60 mph in a launch-control-enabled 3.5 seconds. Output totals are up to 519 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque on this mighty mini ute. Dual-motor all-wheel drive is standard, and you'll have your choice of all-season or summer tires. Supporting this performance is an 85-kWh battery, the same size fitted to the standard Optiq. Cadillac estimates the V will travel 275 miles on a full charge, which is about 25 miles less than the standard Optiq.
