Woman kidnapped on bike trip nearly 40 years ago, MI cops say. Now suspect ID'd

Miami Herald04-08-2025
A woman was on a bike trip from her home in Wisconsin to a city in Michigan in 1986 when she was kidnapped at a public restroom and sexually assaulted, Michigan State Police said.
Nearly four decades later, a suspect has been identified through DNA testing, according to an Aug. 1 news release from troopers.
The woman came out of the public bathroom in Garden Township in August 1986 during her over 300-mile bike trip from Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and was forced into a person's car at gunpoint, police said.
She was driven around and sexually assaulted multiple times, then released, according to troopers.
The case eventually turned cold, but it was often reviewed, state police said. It took until 2023, when a group of students at Northern Michigan University's Cold Case Program reviewed the case, for there to be a breakthrough.
Students helped determine that Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy, a newer technique to trace familial connections through DNA evidence, could help move the case along.
A 78-year-old man was identified through this testing, and a sample of his DNA obtained through a search warrant confirmed he was a match to DNA evidence obtained nearly four decades ago, police said.
State police believe this is Michigan's oldest sexual assault case to be solved using Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy.
The man was charged with kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct in Delta County, police said. On July 27, however, he was found dead in his Argonne, Wisconsin, home, police said.
Troopers did not identify the man because he is deceased.
Sault Ste. Marie is a 345-mile drive northwest from Detroit.

Police pursuit involving stolen U-Haul truck ends with crash, driver in custody

A stolen U-Haul truck crashed into a utility pole during a police pursuit in Metro Detroit, the Michigan State Police reported. The crash happened about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday near 108 Massachusetts Street, after Highland Park Police Department reported it was involved in the pursuit. As the Detroit Regional Communication Center relayed that information to state police in the area, they learned that the stolen vehicle tried to ram a patrol car and strike multiple officers. Highland Park police reported the pursuit ended with the suspect crashing the truck into a pole near Massachusetts Street and John R Street. Metro South post troopers responded to the area, and assisted in looking for the driver. State police chased the suspect into a back yard and then found him, a 34-year-old man from Detroit, hiding behind a house. The suspect was taken into custody and turned over to Highland Park Police Department, which is continuing the investigation.

Romeo man charged with animal cruelty, accused of beating, dragging dog

A man has been charged in the case of a dog that was reported abused Sunday in Macomb County, Michigan. Corbin Charles Sutton, 31, of Romeo, was arraigned Tuesday in 42-1 District Court in Romeo on one count of animal cruelty, the Michigan State Police said. Surton's Bond was set at $25,000. Troopers responded after receiving several 911 calls reporting seeing someone beating and dragging a dog Sunday morning along Van Dyke Avenue in Bruce Township. Police later found Sutton and the dog along St. Michel Avenue. Police say Sutton was combative with troopers, but was arrested without being injured. He allegedly damaged a Macomb County Sheriff's Office patrol car during his arrest. The dog was taken to a veterinarian for emergency care and will be in need of surgery and follow-up medical care, police said. In the meantime, ownership of the dog has been surrendered to Macomb County Animal Control. Sutton's next court hearing is set for Aug. 19.

Michigan State Police trooper struck and injured while investigating crash in Marquette County

A Michigan State Police trooper was struck and injured while investigating a previous crash in Marquette County. The circumstances happened about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 41 Highway near Midway Drive in Marquette Township, state police reported. A trooper from the Negaunee Post was sent to that area to investigate a two-vehicle injury crash. One of the vehicles was eastbound on U.S. 41 when that driver, a 56-year-old man, lost control. He was struck by the second vehicle, driven by a 36-year-old woman, who was westbound. The at-fault eastbound vehicle then struck a guardrail and stopped in the road. While the officer was investigating that crash, another vehicle approached and tried to avoid a second collision. But that effort did not succeed, the approaching vehicle struck yet another vehicle, struck the trooper and finally one of the vehicles involved in the initial crash. The officer fell onto the hood of a car in an attempt to avoid serious injury from the impact. The driver who struck the trooper was identified as a 57-year-old woman. She has been cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. The trooper had minor injuries as a result of the incident and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. "This is a harsh reminder to slow down and move over for emergency personnel. Thankfully, our trooper did not sustain serious injuries," the report said.
