Euro 2025: England beats Spain in a penalty shootout after 1-1 draw to retain title
England had fallen behind in the first half, fought back in the second and relied on its superb substitutes — including Kelly – just as it did against Italy and beating Sweden on penalties previously in the knockout rounds.
"I actually can't believe it myself," Wiegman said. "How can this happen? But it happens. We're just going to party tonight."
England leveled the score in the 57th on Alessia Russo's header from a cross by Kelly after Caldentey had given Spain the lead in the 25th finishing Ona Batlle's cross.
Spain trailed for only four minutes in the entire tournament — and not for one second against England — yet could not seal its first European title against the team it beat in the World Cup final two years ago.
"I think this team deserved more. At least not living with this bitter feeling," Spain coach Montse Tomé said in translated comments.
Kelly had scored an extra-time winning goal for England at Wembley three years ago to beat Germany 2-1.
Spain's missed chance
In extra time Spain had good possession in the England penalty area so many times yet did not force a decisive goal.
"It was cruel," Bonmatí told Spanish broadcaster La 1, after being named best player of the tournament. "We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that's not enough."
Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll saved spot kicks from England captain Leah Williamson and the first by Beth Mead.
It was appropriate in England's memorable tournament that Mead's penalty had to be retaken under a new soccer rule that allows a second chance when a player scores by slipping and touching the ball twice. It did not matter after Hampton's saves.

"We Are Ready": Pakistan T20I Captain Salman Agha Sends Bold Message Ahead Of Asia Cup
Captain Salman Ali Agha declared that Pakistan is "ready" for the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to begin on September 9, following their narrow two-wicket defeat in the second T20I against the West Indies. The tournament will follow the T20I format and feature eight teams: the five full members of the Asian Cricket Council: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, along with the UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. Asia Cup will offer an opportunity to all the participating teams to fine-tune their preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. With barely a month left for the commencement of the Asia Cup in the UAE, Pakistan skipper Agha has sent a bold message to the rest of the opposition. "The way spinners bowled in both games, I think we're ready for the Asia Cup. They always come in numbers and support us wherever we play," Agha said in the post-match presentation after the second T20I against the West Indies. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are in Group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in Group B. Dubai will host 11 matches, and Abu Dhabi will be the home ground for eight fixtures. The tournament opener is placed between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9 in Abu Dhabi. Although India is the formal tournament host, a neutral venue will be provided for the opposing team for three years for competitions held in India or Pakistan, according to an agreement between the BCCI and the PCB. In the buildup of the series, Pakistan embarked on the three-match T20I affair against the Caribbean side with flying colours. In the series opener, the Men in Green hammered 178/6 on the board and defended it successfully with a spin masterclass. In the second fixture, fortune turned its face away from Pakistan. Their batters struggled to find their mojo and limped to 133/9. In reply, Pakistan's spin troika of Mohammad Nawaz, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Saim Ayub failed to pull off a rescue act. Agha dissected his side's performance and felt a 130-run target was never going to be enough against an explosive West Indies side. "In this game, we didn't bat well in the powerplay and couldn't finish the game like we wanted either. But we bowled and fielded well. There's always room to improve - death bowling can be better. 130 was never enough, but they fought really well," he added. In the Asia Cup, India can face Pakistan three times in the tournament. Apart from the scheduled group stage fixture, India and Pakistan can compete in the Super 4 if they qualify from the group stage. If they manage to go past the Super 4 stage, they will square off for the third time in the tournament's final. Fans, various politicians and former cricketers believe that India should not play against Pakistan in the tournament. The outrage over India facing Pakistan in the tournament stems from the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam during which 26 tourists were killed on April 22 by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in the name of religion. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the attack and dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deeper inside Pakistan.

'Injection Liya?' Shubman Gill's Desperate Query To India Pacer Caught On Stump Mic
India captain Shubman Gill was heard asking pacer Akash Deep if he had taken an injection to ease his pain in a desperate attempt on Day 4 of the fifth Test match at The Oval on Sunday. Akash Deep suffered another injury when he was struck on shin by a shot from Harry Brook. Gill continued to depend on his pace attack - especially Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna - with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja providing very little threat. Gill wanted to bring Akash Deep into the attack and he was heard on stump-mic saying 'Injection liya kya tum? (Have you taken an injection)". Harry Brook's counter attacking hundred and Joe Root 's sublime unbeaten 98 put England on course for a series winning record 374-run chase against India at tea on day four of the final Test on Sunday. — The Game Changer (@TheGame_26) August 3, 2025 An epic 195-run stand off 211 balls between Brook and Root took the wind out India's sails as England coasted to 317 for four at tea, needing another 57 runs for the series sealing victory. It was the second hundred of the series for Brook (111 off 98), who displayed special ball striking abilities under extreme pressure. He made most of a life given on on 19 when Mohammed Siraj stumbled to the boundary ropes after taking his catch off Prasidh Krishna. The three Indian pacers could not much out of the pitch with a softer ball and the two spinners Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja too proved ineffective although to be fair to them they weren't given lengthy spells. The new ball is still 14 overs away and the game would be as good as over by then if England continue marching towards their goal.
