RedMagic Astra Gaming Tablet unboxing

RedMagic Astra Gaming Tablet unboxing

GSM Arena11 hours ago
The RedMagic Astra Gaming Tablet made its global debut yesterday and will open for an Early Bird pre-order from July 10 to July 15, starting at $469/€469/£409. So our unboxing is just in time!
The tablet ships with just a USB-C cable, but if you pre-order during the promo period, RedMagic will throw in an 80W charger for free!
We'll get to the specs, but the compact size of the Astra Gaming Tablet is what truly defines this machine. RedMagic, naturally, bills it as a gaming tablet, but it could be an excellent travel companion for multimedia consumption and staying connected!
It's easy to hold this tablet in one hand, thanks to the flat metal frame. And at only 374 grams, it's light enough to allow prolonged use. Still, we wouldn't mind a folio-style case for added protection.
It's this small
The RedMagic Astra Gaming Tablet is well-specced indeed. It's running a Snapdragon 8 Elite that has an advanced cooling system to rely on. There's a Liquid Metal layer on top of the SoC to move heat away from it and onto a complex vapor chamber.
Then there's an active cooling fan that spins quietly to move heat out of the tablet. RedMagic says all of this cooling brings down the Snapdragon 8 Elite's temperature by 8°C, which is very significant under load.
Despite its diminutive size, the tablet packs an 8,200mAh battery too!
Solid specs and a built-in fan
The display is excellent. We appreciate that it's an OLED panel and not an LCD (as good as those are these days). You can really feel the bump up from 120Hz to 165Hz; animations are sharper and zippier.
There are just two speakers on either side of the Astra Gaming Tablet, but they're boomy. They have very solid volume, too. Led Zeppelin comes alive in a way that's not possible on your flagship phone. You could use this tablet as an ad hoc speaker for your tunes.
Compact tablet doubters will say that you should just buy a foldable phone instead of a portable tablet. But there's definitely a place and suitable use cases for a high-end small tablet. It's superb for on-the-go multimedia enjoyment - videos simply are nicer on this than on your phone!
And of course, the RedMagic Astra Gaming Tablet will excel at gaming in a way a phone wouldn't, thanks to its bigger canvas, its potent (and properly cooled) hardware, and its bigger battery!

Galaxy Z Fold7's official cases leak

We're less than a week away from Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked, where we'll see the highly anticipated launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, Z Flip7 FE and Galaxy Watch 8 series. We've seen numerous details about the Z Fold7, but we now have our first look at the five official Samsung cases for it, thanks to a new report from NieuweMobiel. Z Fold7 Silicone case The Silicone case will be available in Black, Blue, Grey and Green colors. It offers an embedded kickstand and is expected to retail for €69. Z Fold7 Silicone case Samsung will also offer a Clear case for users who prefer to show off their phone's original color. This case does not feature a kickstand and will retail for €49. Z Fold7 Clear case If you want a clear case and need extra grip, Samsung will also offer its Clear grip case, which adds a retractable finger loop and is expected to retail for €53. Z Fold7 Clear grip case Galaxy Z Fold7 is expected to feature Qi2 wireless charging, but the device won't feature magnets, which is not uncommon. Samsung will offer a solution with its Clear Magnet case, which adds a magnetic circle on the back of the case to help it align with Qi2 chargers. This one is expected to retail for €57. Z Fold7 Clear Magnet case Samsung will also bring back its traditional Carbon Shield case, which features a stealthy carbon-fiber pattern. This one is expected to retail for €89. Z Fold7 Carbon Shield case Interestingly, none of these cases have an S Pen holster, which circles back to a rumor from earlier this year, which claims the Fold7 may lack S Pen support. Another report suggests Samsung will redesign the S Pen for the Fold7, making it slightly thicker for better ergonomics. Source (in Dutch)

Popular mid-range Pixel model will receive an important battery update on July 8th

Google has already made it clear that some Pixel 6a users will receive a mandatory update this month that will fix an issue with the phone's battery. To get ready for the update, Google cleared all factory image files for the Pixel 6a . The last time something like this happened, Google cleared all factory images for the Pixel 4a, and within days. the Pixel 4a's battery update was released. The Pixel 6a needs a battery update because. without one, there is a good chance that the cell on some Pixel 6a units will overheat. Google said last month that only a subset of Pixel 6a units will need the update, which will lower the capacity of the Pixel 6a 's battery, and reduce its charging performance after 400 charge cycles. When the Pixel 4a battery was recently impaired by time, Google offered users a free battery replacement, $50 payments, or a $50 discount code from the Google Store to use toward the price of any replacement device available from the online Google Store. Google called all of this the "Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program." Like it did with the Pixel 4a, you can now see if your Pixel 6a qualifies for the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program. Simply tap on this link and follow the directions on the screen. We first told you about this update last month and now we know exactly when the update will arrive. Google announced yesterday that the battery update for the Pixel 6a is coming July 8th, next Tuesday. Now that we know the date when it will arrive, you should know that all Pixel 6a models will receive this mandatory update. However, those with impacted Pixel 6a models will be eligible to receive a free battery replacement at no cost, a cash payment, or a hardware discount from the Google Play Store. Google will let you know if your device qualifies as an "impacted" model. "Impacted" models will also receive a notification from Google when they have completed 375 charging cycles. As we pointed out earlier in this article, Google cleared all of the factory images from the Pixel 6a stable and beta release pages. The Pixel 6a was also removed from the OTA files page. The only thing left for the Pixel 6a is a "Coming soon" notice on the factory images page explaining that a special battery update for the model will be coming soon. Just in time, starting July 21st, Google is debuting walk-in battery replacements in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India. There will be mail-in repair available in the U.S. and India. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! We may earn a commission if you make a purchase Check Out The Offer

Europeans to miss certain iOS 26 features due to strict EU regulations

Users in the EU are still waiting for their iPhone mirroring on Macs, and they won't be getting the Live Activities feature anytime soon either, due to strict EU regulations under the Digital Markets Act. In a recent statement, Kyle Andeer, the president of Apple Legal, said that some of the upcoming iOS 26 features may be delayed for European consumers or might not arrive at all. There are even talks about EU users losing the AirDrop function. According to Apple, Europe's DMA is hurting the company as it requires it to share its technology with other parties. Additionally, the privacy requirements under the Digital Markets Act are unrealistic and appear to favor certain companies, Cupertino claims. Apple has once again pointed out that Meta is exploiting the DMA's requirements and is asking for technology and user data that has nothing to do with Facebook or Instagram's core services. In the meantime, Apple is being forced to delay products and features because the EU is making it hard to comply with all the rules, which don't seem to apply to all companies equally. Apple's official stance is that the DMA isn't designed to protect customers, but to favor companies instead, sometimes European ones. It's interesting to see Apple fighting the EU's regulatory bodies while complying with everything that the Chinese government asks. In any case, we hope the EU and Apple sort these things out for the sake of regular consumers, who are forced to pay the same price, or even higher, as their US peers and do not receive all the functionalities.
