KEVIN DOHERTY reckons Conor Keeley is the best defender in the League of Ireland right now.
The 27-year-old's late, late goal rescued a point for the Drogs against

And Doherty believes the Meath man is a class apart on current form.
The United boss said: 'There were proper questions asked of us and we've come away with a point.
'It would have been easy for us to lie down but Conor Keeley, who is the best defender in the league at the minute in my view, comes up with a big goal.
'It's the fifth goal for him from centre-back. We're a decent side in second place going into the mid-season break and I'm not sure many would have predicted that. I know that for sure.

'We're really happy and we'll look forward to getting some freshness back.'
While Doherty says he has a 'decent side' on his hands, Blues gaffer John Coleman believes he has the best footballing team and is aiming for
Europe
.
Hitmen Tommy Lonergan and Pádraig Amond twice put them in front only for Warren Davis and then Keeley to peg them back.
Coleman added: 'Football is a
funny
game because we've drawn 2-2. It feels to us like a loss and to them like a win.

'I've been on the end of that many times. I'm more disappointed for my players because of how well we played — and it was two completely styles of
football
.
'I've nothing against the way they play. I'm not one of these people who turn their noses up on styles of football. Whatever is effective is effective. They are really good at what they do, I respect it a lot.

'We play a different style. We dominated the game for long
periods
, kept our shape, but maybe overplayed it a little bit in the second half. We pinned them back so they couldn't lay a glove on us until injury-time.
'We've defended set-plays and corners really well since I've been here. It's a cheap header for the first one and it's a ridiculous goal for the second. He's put it in from a yard with his feet. That's the disappointing thing.
'We're probably the best footballing side in the league at the minute and we've told the lads that if they don't think they can make Europe then don't come back after the break.'

Josh Honohan: Versatility is definitely a strength of mine

Presuming John O'Shea is delegated defensive duties within the Irish coaching ticket would be dangerous with Heimir Hallgrímsson around. The Icelander's soundbites resonate with the last non-Irishman to take the reins, Giovanni Trapattoni, for the priority he places on fundamentals. Josh Honohan's promotion to the squad tallies with that outlook, the Corkman considered one of the best League of Ireland defenders in recent years. Sunday's introductory session at Abbotstown was a leisurely workout before the real work began on Monday. First things first for the Ireland boss was assembling his defenders away from the main group to engage in shadow drills without the ball. 'It's still fresh to me but you can see why he's been successful as an international manager,' said Honohan, referring to Hallgrímsson's track record with his homeland and Jamaica. 'He's shown me clips of the way we play and little principles we have. He wants us to be a well-drilled team with good shape - and you can see he is a top manager.' Honohan has two friendlies – at home to Senegal on Friday and away to Luxembourg next Tuesday – to make his debut and push for inclusion in the squad for the World Cup qualifiers. Silverware has eluded him since he left Cork City to join Shamrock Rovers chasing their fifth successive title at the start of last season. Shelbourne denied the Hoops that unprecedented sequence but his call-up to the Irish fold was based primarily on how he fared on the European run that included a trip to eventual Conference League champions Chelsea. While Colin Healy praised Honohan's lightning pace at City and Stephen Bradley talked up his ability to operate with either foot, he didn't always mark himself out as a future Ireland defender. 'I never went to the UK as a teen but never saw it as a negative,' said the 24-year-old, recalling several of his peers receiving invites from interested clubs. 'I played with Carrigaline United until I was 16. I was lucky I had great coaching down there and then I went to Cork City, the academy there, had brilliant managers there and I think that is definitely something that helped me. 'Coming to Shamrock Rovers last year, with the standards they set, the manager, and the rest of the staff there, has improved me. 'You always have confidence in your own ability because if you don't then nobody is going to have confidence in you. 'I think in the modern game you must be versatile, comfortable playing in different positions. And, having done that in the last couple of years, I definitely think it's a strength of mine.'

Drogs must act fast to resolve Conference League conflict

Trivela's ownership of Drogheda United may have to be divested to prevent the FAI Cup holders losing their place in the Europa Conference League draw on June 13. Uefa rules debar clubs with the same owners facing each other in competition for sporting integrity purposes. An obstacle has arisen for Drogs due to Silkeborg IF qualifying from the Danish league for the same competition over the weekend. American investors Trivela possess both clubs within their multi-club stable – Drogheda's on a full 100% stake and their latest purchase, Silkeborg, with an 80% shareholding. A statement released by the Louth club on Sunday night offered no assurance of Drogs' first foray into Europe for 12 years proceeding, other than citing ongoing discussions with Uefa. Those talks will centre on the degree of control Trivela carry over each entity. English FA Cup winners Crystal Palace are also deadlocked in negotiations with the governing body due to a potential conflict with Lyon's entrance to the Europa League. American John Textor has stakes in each both Palace argue his minority 25% shareholding doesn't accord him stewardship of decision-making. He owns 41% of Lyon. Drogs must act fast to resolve the blockers because in such conflicts, precedence is given to the club which finishes highest in the league. Drogs qualified through the Cup, Silkeborg the league. FAI Cup runners-up Derry City are ineligible to replace Drogs as, according to the Derry Journal, they didn't apply for a Uefa licence.

Ollie Horgan happy with Galway United's ‘good point' and clean sheet against Shamrock Rovers during ‘bad run'

OLLIE HORGAN knows good habits are as easy to keep as bad habits are to break. So the assistant boss hopes Galway United's first clean sheet in 11 can be the start of something positive once again. United drew It has been a rollercoaster season for the Tribe, who had a chance to go top of the table just last month. But Horgan insisted that maintaining their good form is about getting the right habits, having experienced all the ups and down while managing Finn Harps. He said: 'Winning can be a habit and losing can be a habit. I've been there. Read more in League of Ireland 'I remember going seven games and didn't win any. And then when the knives were out, we won the next three. 'And we stayed up comfortably, albeit in a different club. It's easier said than done. 'It's always a good changing room. But when you're on a bad run, it's very difficult to turn. Confidence is something that you can't really buy. But when it turns . . . 'The last place you felt that we'd get a clean sheet was away in Tallaght. But that's the way it's happened. But it's still only a point. Most read in Football 'But we've been here with moral victories over the years with different teams. At least it's a point. 'And I don't think anyone will begrudge us the point. It's not like it was daylight robbery. It certainly wasn't. Bruno Fernandes sent message by ex-Premier League star over Al-Hilal transfer 'But we had a bit of luck maybe last weekend more so. And we stumbled over the line against Cork. 'And the training on Sunday morning was bright and breezy. And you knew that we would take a cut off it.' Horgan is correct in his view that Galway deserved their point despite offering little in attack. The visitors defended well to limit their rivals to very few chances. Horgan added: 'I felt we were organised. We kept our discipline. We gave away very few free-kicks. 1 The Tribesmen have only recorded one win of their last six league games 'Often up there you tire as the game goes on. But we freshened it up. Now, we ran our luck a little bit. 'Had we any chance on the counter? Probably very little to be blunt. But at the same time, Shamrock Rovers weren't overly blessed with chances. 'I would like to see the possession stats, but sometimes it goes out the window when you're defending deep and playing on the counter. 'We defended crosses, we blocked shots. And we dealt with even their substitutions. Rory Gaffney came on and he's been a thorn in our side over the years. 'But we dealt with him as well. Look, it's a good point. It's only a point. But it's still a good point, obviously, away from home in Tallaght.' With the international break upon us, players have also been given a week off for rest and recovery. And Horgan believes that time off at this time of the season is important. He added: 'That's set in stone since the start of the season. The lads are going away with their families and partners. You can't stop them. 'I know there's a bit of talk as regards is it right or wrong? I think, that we are all thankful of the break, especially when you're on a bad run.'
