Phil Gould calls out dressing room claims at the Broncos after players hit back
NRL supremo Phil Gould has rubbished suggestions the Broncos players look like they are lacking effort having backed Michael Maguire to make the 'mental' adjustments to turn things around. Gould watched Daly Cherry-Evans and the Manly Sea Eagles destroy the Broncos last Saturday as they put 34 on Brisbane in a dismal display.
Despite boasting representative players such as Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, Reece Walsh and Adam Reynolds in their squad, the Broncos sit in 12th on the ladder. The defeat to the Sea Eagles also marked their sixth in seven games as the playing group look bereft of ideas out on the field when things are going against them.
While Maguire has moved to make selection changes this week with Carrigan moving back to lock, the coach is facing scrutiny after a strong start to the season. Both Ben Ikin and Darren Lockyer made telling comments about Maguire's position at the club after his latest loss piled on the pressure.
Although Gould has slammed suggestions the players are not on board with Maguire's style. Speaking on his Wide World of Sports podcast Six Tackles with Gus, the Bulldogs general manager feels the players are trying too hard during their form slump and overplaying their hand.
"When you see a side like that, all of sudden it's the players are off with the coach, the coach has lost the dressing room... that's rubbish, I don't see that at all," he said. "That's what people saw about any club struggling when they expected better. I think people get influenced by the scoreboard a lot when they critique these performances.
"I'm watching the game and I'm not seeing a lack of effort, I'm not seeing a lack of care. I certainly can't label them with that. In fact, I think sometimes they are their own worst enemy because they are over trying."
Gould feels the players are trying hard, but lack cohesion and a clear plan when they find themselves down on the scoreboard. Although the former NSW coach believes if Maguire can find the switch, it could see a massive change in the powerful Broncos side stacked with talent.
Gould feels it isn't due to a lack of physicality or skill that has seen the Broncos lose six of their last seven games. But rather the change in momentum will come internally with Maguire needing to reframe the mindset of the playing group that he has inherited. And he also feels the players need to change their view on how the season will turn around.
"I think the problems with them mainly are mental...I think these are things they just need to settle down, it is not going to be solved overnight," he added. "They just need to take a breath of fresh air, sit and relax, and get into that room full of mirrors where they can all take accountability for what's going wrong and sort it out."

Both Kotoni Staggs and captain Adam Reynolds have slapped down the suggestion there is player unrest at the club after the weekend's loss. Speculation was mounting Maguire's rigged training regime had taken its toll on some of the players. This prompted Penrith legend Greg Alexander to rip into the reports.
"Don't let me think that Brisbane players are whingeing because Michael Maguire is too hard on them. Cry me a river, you little wusses," Alexander said on SEN Radio this week. "If that is true, none of them deserve to be playing NRL. "I can't believe it's true because I can't believe that experienced NRL players would be bitching and whingeing because Michael Maguire keeps them there too long."
However, Reynolds led the charge and dismissed such claims heading into round 15. "It's easy for the outside noise to obviously try and tear the team apart and the coaching staff," Reynolds said on Channel Nine.
"Look, we're working hard, we're just like any other team who train hard. Everyone can write what they want to write, but internally we know we're capable of doing some great things here, and Madge is the right man leading us forward."

Broncos' Sean Payton Speaks Out On JK Dobbins' Team Visit
Broncos' Sean Payton Speaks Out On JK Dobbins' Team Visit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite using their second round pick to select UCF running back, RJ Harvey, there is still a feeling that the Denver Broncos' RB room could use some reinforcements. Advertisement Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime and Tyler Badie are all nice complementary, auxiliary pieces, but none feel like they can be part of a hard-hitting, one-two punch with Harvey. So it makes sense that the team planned a visit with free agent, and ex Charger and Raven, JK Dobbins on Thursday. And head coach, Sean Payton, had some complementary words to say about the former AFC West rival, per Mike Klis. 'Another good football player that we've seen firsthand." Payton said to the media on Thursday, "I've seen for a while the importance of that position group. We really like the group right now we're working with, it's just another opportunity to possibly bring in another good football player to help us win.' JK Dobbins, Baltimore RavensPaul Rutherford-Imagn Image Dobbins is not necessarily an earth-shatteringly big name, but he is certainly an excellent back who would undoubtedly be on a roster right now as the RB1 - or high end 2 - if it were not for consistent injuries that have threaten to derail his otherwise potential-filled career. Advertisement Even though the former second round pick missed four games in 2024, he still managed 905 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns, with an additional 153 receiving yards off of 32 receptions. Of the backs still left unsigned in the NFL, Dobbins has arguably the best case for being a true, quality starting back in the league - and could be an excellent mentor and teammate for Harvey over the next season or two. That is, if he does end up signing with the Broncos. Meninga's major sacrifice to become Bears boss
The Perth Bears have locked in their most important piece with rugby league Immortal Mal Meninga confirmed as the inaugural coach of the NRL's newest franchise. Meninga has had to vacate his role as Kangaroos coach and will officially start his new job on July 1 as he prepares to build a roster for when the Bears enter the competition in 2027. The Raiders legend oversaw the greatest Maroons side of all time and has enjoyed World Cup success with Australia, but this will be his first time back in club land since he left Canberra in 2001. 'This is bigger than me,' he said. 'It's about the game and the growth of the game in WA. I want to leave it in a good place. The foundations are going to be set in stone, and when I move on, the great club called the Perth Bears will hopefully be a success. 'It's a huge responsibility, but I believe I'm up for it. 'It's a huge challenge, but I love challenges.' With Meninga signed on for the next three years, Perth finally has a big Bear over there, but they'll need a chair as well and hopefully people willing to share the stories that the NRL wants them to tell. It's why Meninga, Bears chief executive Anthony De Ceglie and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo stressed the importance of understanding the rugby league community in Western Australia and ensuring the link to North Sydney isn't lost. De Ciglie is aware of the sporting landscape in Perth where AFL remains king, but rugby league has already ruffled a few feathers and will only get bigger with Meninga at the helm. 'It's obvious that Mal is an Immortal of the NRL, but I think it's important to note that he's an Immortal of the national sporting landscape,' De Ceglie said, with Meninga beating out other candidates like Brad Arthur and Sam Burgess. 'Mal is a part of the Australian identity, so we're incredibly honoured that he's taken up this opportunity. 'It's small steps. We've gone from one Bear in me to two Bears with Mal, so we've doubled our staff overnight. 'I genuinely feel like the first thing we need to do is listen and appreciate and respect the legacy of the North Sydney Bears but also the fans in WA who have a proud tradition as well. 'They've kept the candle burning for decades, and we have to marry those things together to make this thing a huge success.' The NRL will work with the Bears to finalise the board, with attention now turning to who will replace Meninga as Kangaroos coach. Meninga has played a key role in growing the international game but won't be there for the Ashes tour at the end of the year, with former Blues boss Brad Fittler the early favourite to take over. 'The commission has long held the view that the Kangaroos coach can't be involved in coaching clubs as well, and that policy is going to continue,' Abdo said. 'As Mal said, this is a full-time job and it's about building a team from the ground up. It's exciting, but it's going to take a lot of hard work, so the focus on the club is one thing, but the commission also has the existing policy. 'We're all excited for the end-of-season tour, and it's been a long time coming. Today was about announcing Mal as the Bears coach, and with Mal secured and finalised, the commission will turn its attention to the right candidate for the Kangaroos.'
