Kelsey Plum clarifies crack about Caitlin Clark's team at WNBA All-Star Game: 'I made a bad joke'
Speaking to reporters in the wake of a 151-131 win for her Team Collier side, Plum mentioned that "Zero members of Team Clark were very present" for the meeting. She treated it as a joke, laughing with teammate Sabrina Ionescu who sardonically added "That really needed to be mentioned."
That comment, however, took on enough of a life of its own that the Los Angeles Sparks star addressed the matter during an appearance on Sue Bird's "Bird's Eye View" podcast published Friday.
Bird brought up the matter by describing the comment as a "joke" that "just got twisted," to which Plum agreed. She then conceded it might not have been the best-timed joke given the gravity of the situation, lamenting the backlash's effect on the conversation:
"I made a bad joke. I made a really bad joke ... And I should have — like, hindsight's 20/20, because of the shirts, because of the fans — I should have known it was a way more serious moment than a typical All-Star Game, because I went into that press conference very, like, happy-go-lucky we won, you know? Had a great weekend, my family's here, it was just a great time.
"The questions came in, and it was like, 'CBA, this, this, this.' Honestly. Birdie, it was like, 'Hey, Team Clark, they didn't make it to the meeting either.' Just making a joke that they were hungover, trying to make the room lighter ... I was making a joke that they were hungover, even though our team nickname was 'hungover.' So I was like, 'At least we made it.'
"Obviously, we're all on the same page. We all wore the shirts. Like, we're all unified. I think, if anything, I was just more discouraged because I felt like it took away from the moment of what we were trying to do. You don't even get to respond and if you do, you seem defensive."
Plum is among the leaders of the Women's National Basketball Players Association as its first vice president, with only president Nneka Ogwumike ranking ahead of her on the players' side.
The union and league are only a few months away from the expiration of the current CBA on Oct. 31. If they can't figure out a new agreement by then, they will be facing a work stoppage that could threaten the 2026 season. Even before breaking out the shirts, the players were openly unhappy with the state of the negotiations, especially with the league about to start bringing in $200 million in annual television money with its new deals.
A two-time WNBA champion with the Las Vegas Aces, Plum is in her first season with the Sparks and currently ranks in the top 5 of the league in points, assists and 3-pointers made per game.

New England rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Efton Chism III each had another preseason touchdown, and the Patriots beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-12 on Saturday. Henderson, the second-round draft pick from national champion Ohio State who's been turning heads in training camp and tracking toward a prominent role in the backfield, rushed for 20 yards with an 8-yard score on four carries during a two-drive stint for the first-team offense. Henderson had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. "He runs hard and protects the ball, and guys were finishing and gave him a little bit of grease," Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said. "You don't need much, and he finds it." Vrabel held a handful of projected starters out, including four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who's returning from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered halfway through his lone season with the Houston Texans. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye started against an all-backups Vikings defense and went 4 for 7 for 46 yards with a delay-of-game penalty and an overthrow that was nearly intercepted but dropped by Tavierre Thomas. Chism made another compelling case for a regular-season roster spot with six receptions from backup QB Joshua Dobbs for 71 yards and a score. He caught a short throw on third-and-9 from the 12 and broke six tackle attempts as he twisted and muscled his way into the end zone. "He wants it, and I think that's the biggest thing he's showed," Maye said. "I think it's paying off for him." With Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and veterans Kendrick Bourne and Mack Hollins secure on the roster, the Patriots (2-0) might only have one spot left for a wide receiver. Chism, who was undrafted as an FCS player from Eastern Washington, will certainly get a long look. He had a 12-yard touchdown catch last week. "Doesn't matter how you get here," Vrabel said. "The only thing that matters is what you do when you're here and I think that's another great example of that." The two teams had two days of joint practices this week, providing plenty of tests for players in situational drills in a controlled setting, and Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell was more than satisfied with the work. No projected starter on either side of the ball suited up for Minnesota (1-1), and several key backups who are locks to make the team were given the afternoon off, too. New quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who led one 12-play drive last week, wore an earpiece on the sideline while Sam Howell started. Howell, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in April after the veteran backup market dried up, went 1 for 5 with an interception he forced off his back foot under pressure. Brett Rypien was 7 for 11 for 83 yards in the second quarter. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who has been the best of the backups in camp, went 15 for 27 for 156 yards while playing the whole second half. His final throw from the 13-yard line on the last play of the game was tipped and intercepted in the end zone by Kyle Dugger. "There's a reason why we're playing all three of them," O'Connell said. "As far as what that means in the overall competition, I think I would just say that it's still open and we're trying to figure out what that room is going to look like for the season." Dugger has 65 starts over five seasons, but he's been relegated to the second team as the Patriots implement a new scheme under Vrabel. Another incumbent starter, outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings, joined Dugger with extensive playing time in the second half while surrounded by rookies trying to make the team. Jennings had three sacks. Another first-teamer who's fallen behind, 2022 first-round draft pick Cole Strange, played with backups while Ben Brown started at left guard. The Patriots finish the preseason at New York Giants on Thursday, when the Vikings play at the Tennessee Titans.

West Mifflin native, WNBA champion Tanisha Wright hosts back-to-school bash for local students
Gary Parker Memorial Park in West Mifflin was the site Saturday afternoon of a special back-to-school bash put on by a local WNBA champion. West Mifflin native and current Chicago Sky assistant coach Tanisha Wright hosted local kids for both a school supplies giveaway as well as a ribbon-cutting for the park's newest basketball court. This is an event Wright puts on every year, and she told KDKA-TV that it's the least she can do to give back to her hometown. "When a kid walks into school with a nice backpack on and something that they've picked out and they like, it's a cool thing for them. I think that excites them. I think that gives them an energy to start the school year," Wright said. In addition to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Wright also hosted a mini basketball clinic for the kids who came out.

Originally, it was looking like his time with the Rams may have been coming to a close, but the two sides were able to reach an agreement to keep Stafford in tow at least for the 2025 campaign. Fast forward to training camp, and Stafford has been dealing with an aggravated disk in his back that has prevented him from practicing. The former Super Bowl champion was expected to practice on Saturday, but now, Los Angeles has offered some rather strange information on Stafford. That obviously does not sound like a great sign for Stafford, who is 37 years old and has developed a rather checkered injury history in the latter stages of his NFL career. Last season, Stafford suited up for 16 games, throwing for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 65.8 percent of his passes and posting a 93.7 passer rating. Was it prime Stafford? No, but it was solid, and he managed to lead the Rams to an NFC West division title and a trip to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Stafford is definitely nearing retirement, and there were questions as to whether or not he would play out the twilight days of his NFL career with another franchise. There was even some talk that the Rams might be better off moving on, especially given the youth movement Los Angeles now has on the defensive side of the ball. In the end, though, cooler heads prevailed, and both sides decided to continue their relationship. The Rams even went out and added Davante Adams to their receiving corps in order to provide Stafford with another top-tier weapon alongside of Puka Nacua. Hopefully, this is much ado about nothing and McVay will unveil a rather unalarming update on the two-time Pro Bowler at the start of next week, but given that Stafford played in a grand total of 24 games between 2022 and 2023 and is only getting older, there is no doubt that this development is worrisome.
