Katy Perry superfan from Alberta basks in newfound fame, puts Medicine Hat on the map
A Katy Perry superfan is basking in newfound fame after a video of him meeting the pop star garnered nearly a million views online.
Perry, who is in Canada performing several shows on her Lifetimes Tour, invited concertgoer Braiden Palumbo on stage during a stop in Vancouver.
Palumbo travelled all the way from Redcliff, Alta., to attend the show. Now, his neighbours are recognizing him from the cute interaction, which somewhat schooled Perry on small-town Prairie life.
'People come into the gas bar all the time and they don't even buy anything, they just want to take a picture with me,' he said on Tuesday. 'Growing up in a small town, only the people in the small town know who you are.'
In the video, Palumbo tells Perry he is from Medicine Hat, which is a small city in southeastern Alberta that's very close to his hometown. The animated pop star looks bewildered and plays to the cheering crowd, saying she needs 'to study better geography.'
'Your hats are filled with medicine? Well you know for us Americans you are our medicine hats, we love it,' she says jokingly.
From there, Perry was in for another lesson when the 20-year-old reveals he works at a Co-op gas bar.
'I'm sorry but you guys are way advanced, what is a Co-op gas bar?' she asks.
When the fan explains it is just a gas station, Perry goes on to say 'it sounds really fancy.'
Perry, who also made news this week after dining out with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sparking romance rumours, is known for interacting with fans during her extravagant performances.
Palumbo said he is grateful to have had that shared moment with Perry, and to put a small town on the map.
'I am a huge Katy Perry fan for as long as I can remember,' Palumbo said.
When Perry began calling people on stage, Palumbo didn't think he would be one of them. That was, until she started walking towards audience members who were further back in the section he was in.
'I knew that that was my moment to shine,' he recalls. He said all he could think of doing to get her attention was raise his arms and scream will full force.
'I was just screaming, 'Pick me, Pick me!' You need to notice me,' he recalls.
The video was originally shared by @vancouver.alex on TikTok and has garnered over 750,000 views since being posted four days ago, leaving fans desperately questioning if Perry will visit Medicine Hat in future tours.
Palumbo has also since changed his profile picture on Instagram to a selfie of him with Perry.

Toronto's El Mocambo will continue as concert venue: new owner

'The intent is to do it better. To manage operations with a little bit more rigor,' Neil Kerr said on behalf of Cyrus Madon, a longtime executive at Brookfield Asset Management, whose purchase of the venue's assets was approved by an Ontario court on Tuesday. 'Cyrus, he's pretty passionate about music, it's a passion that he's probably had for 50 years… He and his wife are strong supporters of Canadian musicians and charities. There are certainly going to be some charitable functions that are held at the venue as well. I think it's a very, very positive story.' Kerr did not disclose the purchase price of the property. The sale is expected to close in the coming weeks. Wekerele, who became a household name after his time as a star on CBC's 'Dragons' Den,' bought the El Mocambo in 2014 for $3.8 million and spent $35 million to improve the space. The businessman's passion project officially reopened in 2021 after a to-the-studs renovation and delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Court documents filed earlier this year showed Wekerle had defaulted on nearly $56 million in loans linked to the space. A spokesperson for the El Mocambo told The Canadian Press that Wekerle is not involved in the deal to sell the property. In a statement to The Canadian Press, Wekerle called the sale of the venue 'very important' to its future. 'I endorsed the purchaser and feel he is like-minded and will preserve the integrity of the El Mo,' he said. The small, two-storey concert venue fell into financial trouble in the 90s and early 2000s after playing host to legendary acts like The Rolling Stones and U2 in the 70s and 80s. How Thomas Müller could give the Vancouver Whitecaps a star power that's hard to describe
In a 2011 interview with a German newspaper, Thomas Müller — then a few years into his legendary career at Bayern Munich — was asked to describe himself as a soccer player. " Ich bin ein Raumdeuter," said Müller, which translates to "I am a space interpreter." After a decorated career in Germany, the 35-year-old is bringing his unique style — one that relies on his uncanny ability to find space in key areas of the pitch — to the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS. "He has always been extremely unconventional and it's impossible to actually put him into a box of a position, because his thing is the game intelligence takes him to where the ball is going to be," says Peter Schaad, a soccer podcaster and former Whitecaps broadcaster. "How you describe that, I don't know." Müller made more appearances than any other player at Bayern and led the club to two UEFA Champions League titles and 13 Bundesliga titles, going out with one last championship this past season. He was also a key member of the German national team that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Müller earned the Silver Boot Award as the tournament's second-leading goal scorer. He won the FIFA Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup as that tournament's top scorer. Two of his five goals came inside of four minutes during Germany's 4-1 Round of 16 win over England. Müller signing puts spotlight on Whitecaps Throughout MLS history, teams have signed veteran stars who had successful tenures with top European clubs, including big names like David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi. The Whitecaps have never signed a player with such global reach, until now. Peter Czimmermann, president of the Southsiders supporters' club, says he is not of fan of MLS clubs signing big-name stars to hefty contracts and then surrounding them with "mediocre players." But that's not the case here, he says. "If you have to sign somebody, he's a good fit," he said of Müller . "He's experienced and I think the team as is right now, it's a lot more than mediocre players. They are great players." Schaad agrees that Müller will be a good fit in Vancouver. "He's a guy who can be very serious sometimes, he can be fun, but he is one of the most intelligent players ever," he said. The Whitecaps' decision to sign Müller comes at a pivotal time in franchise history. Late last year, the owners of the Whitecaps announced they were preparing to sell the club, and the commissioner of the MLS recently said the Whitecaps are in urgent need of a new stadium. Meanwhile, the team has found success on the pitch under coach Jesper Sorensen, earning a spot in the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this year. Having a player of Müller's stature on the roster could help the team and raise its valuation, says Czimmermann. "He will bring more attention. We would argue that in the past two years we deserved it because the team was really good, but I think this is kind of stepping up one level." Schaad agrees that the presence of the Raumdeuter has the potential to take the Whitecaps to new heights. "All of a sudden the spotlight is on the Whitecaps again and people are just going, 'How did they pull this off? Why Vancouver? Why did he choose Vancouver?' There must be something good happening. All those are really great things."
