Gujarat: Anti-Drone Guns Deployed For 148th Rath Yatra In Ahmedabad As Part Of Tight Security Measures
As part of heightened security measures for the 148th Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad, the Crime Branch has deployed anti-drone guns developed by Bangalore-based AXISCADES Aerospace & Technologies Pvt Ltd to monitor the 16-km procession route, officials said on Friday.
According to officials, the advanced equipment is designed to detect and jam unauthorised drones, ensuring that only drones authorised by the administration remain operational along the yatra route.
Speaking to ANI, Prashant Sharma, Anti-Drone Gun Operator at AXISCADES, said, "This technology is a detection and jamming unit for drones. We have supplied 100 of these units to the Indian Army Northern Command. It was successfully used in Operation Sindoor... We add the department's drones to our list. Other drones are highlighted in red colour (in our cameras), so we ask the official whether to jam them or not."
Meanwhile, a large number of devotees participated in the procession on the occasion of Ashadhi Bij (Kutchi New Year) in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Officials said that the deployment of the anti-drone system is part of broader efforts to ensure safety during one of the city's major religious events, which draws massive crowds each year.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi also spoke to ANI about the scale of the security arrangements in place.
"Lakhs of devotees come for Darshan during the Rath Yatra along its 16-km route. More than 23,800 security personnel have been deployed. A few elephants lost control this morning, but within minutes, forest officials, the police team, and the AMC managed to bring the situation under control. Forest and medical teams are present with all the elephants," he said.
Meanwhile,the grand annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath commenced in Odisha's Puri on Friday, as thousands of devotees began pulling the majestic chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, amid chants, drumbeats, and spiritual fervour.
Following the completion of key rituals, including the sacred 'Chhera Pahanra' (sweeping ceremony) performed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the deities were ceremonially placed on their respective chariots -- Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana.
With the blowing of conch shells and rhythmic beating of cymbals and mridangas, the pulling of the chariots began along the Grand Road (Bada Danda), marking the start of the deities' annual journey.
The 'Chhera Pahanra' is one of the most significant customs of the Rath Yatra, symbolising humility and equality before the divine.
During the ritual, the Gajapati Maharaja, the erstwhile King of Puri and chief servitor of Lord Jagannath, swept around the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra with a golden broom, sprinkling sandalwood water and flowers, and invoking blessings to purify the path of the divine journey.
Dressed in traditional attire, the Gajapati Maharaja arrived in a royal procession from the Puri royal palace to the Grand Road, where the deities were placed on their respective chariots. His ceremonial act represents the deep intertwining of royalty and devotion in Jagannath culture.

Kolkata: Law colleges in the city have a history of campus violence and skirmishes. While some, including the college where the gang rape took place on Friday, continue to grapple with such issues, others have made efforts in recent years to improve their reputation by enforcing discipline, adhering to academic schedules, and strengthening safety and security measures. The college that came under the spotlight on Friday has witnessed vandalism and violence between rival students' groups. "We have tried to reduce political interference by involving students in academics and other activities. Previously, classes were not held regularly, and students engaged in politics, leading to brawls and fights. However, the situation has changed completely. We have restricted outsiders on campus, and students are encouraged to participate in academics and activities that aid their careers. These have helped us reform the college's image. Security was enhanced," he added. Surendranath Law College was notorious for campus violence in the past. But it has improved its image considerably in recent years by implementing measures to address untoward incidents, particularly gender-based violence. Shibasish Banerjee, visiting faculty and advocate at Calcutta HC, said: "We have a strong mechanism in place to prevent untoward incidents. The campus is almost entirely covered with CCTV cameras. Students must vacate the common room by 2 pm. If there is a programme and students need to stay until late evening, access is limited to areas covered by CCTV cameras. We try to prevent students from staying beyond 8 pm. There is a grievance cell, and two female teachers are assigned duties to check on female students for any issues in college."

New Delhi: A 43-year-old man was shot dead while his daughter was injured when armed men on a bike fired several shots at the duo on their morning walk on Friday in northwest Delhi's Bawana. The deceased was identified as Deepak Kumar. Police claimed that the murder was a fallout of a gang war, and UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu was behind the killing. Kumar was allegedly shot eight times from close range near the fields adjoining his farmhouse. Sources said that he was the nephew of underworld don Manjeet Mahal, and the murder might be linked to a long-standing feud between Mahal and London-based Nandu. "Kapil Sangwan suspected Kumar was actively working for Mahal and thus ordered the hit," alleged a police source. The two gangsters have been at odds for years, resulting in the deaths of over a dozen people. After 8 years, police ‘spotters' deployed to recognise criminals in crowds
1 2 3 Puri: After a gap of eight years, state police redeployed 'spotters' from different states during Rath Yatra to recognise security suspects, terrorists and notorious criminals in crowded places and alert the local authorities. The spotters, who were last deployed in 2017, are specialised police officers who have expertise in monitoring and identifying criminals from their jurisdictions. They belong to various specialised security agencies who keep a tab on persons allegedly involved in anti-national activities and pass on the information to state police for necessary action. "In an attempt to provide foolproof security to the lakhs of devotees and VVIPs during Rath Yatra, we sought the assistance of 'spotters' from different states for keeping an eye on persons linked to various criminal and terror groups, and foil their nefarious designs through pre-emptive police action. We had written to all states to send spotters to recognise security suspects during the mega event," ADG (law and order) Sanjay Kumar told TOI. Police officers said large-scale festivals like Rath Yatra, which draw global attention, also attract criminals from various regions. Teams of 'spotters' in plainclothes patrolled the Jagannath Temple, Grand Road and beach, observing the crowds carefully. "We mobilised trained police personnel from other districts to specifically keep tabs on the criminals of their areas," Kumar said. Deployment of the spotters was part of a broader security strategy to ensure a safe and incident-free Rath Yatra, particularly given the recent Indo-Pakistan tensions following the Pahalgam terror strike. For the first time, NSG snipers took positions on rooftops at strategic locations around the temple and Grand Road. Besides, an anti-terrorist squad and armoured vehicle were stationed in Puri to effectively handle any untoward incident. Over 10,000 police personnel, including 203 platoons of police forces and five companies of Central Armed Police Forces were positioned for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra.
