Angel Cabrera wins rain-delayed Traditions for first senior major title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Angel Cabrera rolled in a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole Monday morning to complete an 8-under 64, and it proved to be a winner in the rain-delayed Regions Tradition that gave the Argentine his first senior major.
Cabrera had to wait to see if 54-hole leader Jerry Kelly could force a playoff. Kelly fell two behind with a bogey on the 17th, and could only manage a birdie at the last for a 68.
Storms interrupted the final round, and when the leaders finally began it was too late for them to finish. Kelly had completed 14 holes and Cabrera was though 15 holes when they returned to Greystone on Monday morning.
Cabrera finished at 20-under 268 and won for the second time on the PGA Tour Champions in the last two months. He won in Florida, his first title since being released after two years in an Argentine prison for gender violence.
Cabrera is a two-time major champion — the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2007 and the Masters in 2009. He joins Miguel Angel Jimenez as the only multiple winners on the PGA Tour Champions.
Y.E. Yang finished another shot back in third place.
Most head north to Congressional for the Senior PGA Championship that starts Thursday. The Regions Tradition is the only one of five senior majors that does not provide entry to a similar tournament on the PGA Tour.
Cabrera earned $390,000 for his second Champions title.

Brad Marchand embraces Panthers' rat-throwing tradition, which goes back 30 years

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — There's a giant, gold-outlined rat emblazoned on the hat that dangles in Brad Marchand's locker. The scrappy NHL veteran has been likened to the tiny rodent for much of his career, notoriously known as 'The Rat' among hockey fans for his brash play. So when Marchand was traded from Boston to Florida back in March, it didn't take long for him to embrace Panthers fans' longstanding tradition of tossing plastic rats onto the ice after wins.

Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen has knee surgery, expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) — Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen had surgery on his right knee on Tuesday and the team said he is expected to be sidelined for four-to-six weeks. Steffen was injured during training with the U.S. national team in Chicago on Wednesday, causing him to miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Rapids said the operation was on his right medial meniscus. Steffen lost an opportunity to perhaps regain the U.S. starting spot. The 30-year-old started six of 14 World Cup qualifiers ahead of the 2022 tournament, including the last three, then was left off the World Cup roster by then-coach Gregg Berhalter. Steffen played his first national team match in nearly three years in a January friendly against Costa Rica and coach Mauricio Pochettino said last month that Matt Turner, the starter since 2022, was not assured of being his No. 1 choice for the Gold Cup. Turner didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. Matt Freese made his national debut in goal during Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey. ___ AP soccer:

Browns' Myles Garrett wants to add Steelers' Aaron Rodgers to his Halloween graveyard

Cleveland Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett might have another headstone to add to his notorious Halloween cemetery this October — and no, it's not as cynical as it sounds. With veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers officially signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Garrett was asked his feelings about the four-time MVP joining an AFC North foe. Advertisement 'I think it's a good opportunity to put him in the graveyard,' Garrett said with a smirk on Tuesday after the Browns' first minicamp practice. Of course, Garrett was referencing his famous Halloween decor, where he transforms his lawn into a graveyard complete with headstones for quarterbacks around the league. It started in 2021, when Garrett said his dad came up with the idea and found someone to help paint headstones for the Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson, Arizona Cardinals' Kyler Murray, Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow and others. #Browns DE Myles Garrett decorated his front yard for Halloween (Pictures via TMZ) — Brad Stainbrook (@StainbrookNFL) October 14, 2021 Garrett did not explicitly say the tombstones symbolize the quarterbacks he's sacked, though he has ranked within the top 15 in the league in sacks in each season since 2018. 'I'm kind of a troll, a little bit, and people in my house like to have fun,' Garrett said then. Last year, the display took on a 'Terminator' theme with the Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen and Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes added to the mix amid a car wreck. The deal includes $10 million guaranteed and potentially up to $19.5 million with incentives, per team sources. Rodgers joined his new teammates on Tuesday for the first day of the Steelers' mandatory minicamp. The Browns visit the Steelers on Oct. 12 and then host Pittsburgh in Week 17 on Dec. 28.
