Bloomington Housing Fair provides resources for all housing needs

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — In the same place you can get a cup of coffee or a new pair of shoes, people at a local mall were given something you don't see everyday.
The city of Bloomington held a Housing Fair in Eastland Mall on Wednesday to offer avenues and resources to people to have a safe place to live.
'We have folks here that are looking to purchase a home, looking to rent, looking for housing, rehab, if they're unhoused, really the full gamut of services that are related to housing,' said Willam Bessler, the city's grants manager.
Several tables were lined up in the mall that ranged from veterans services to education to the Salvation Army.
With Home Sweet Home Ministries currently leading the charge in the mission to mitigate homelessness in the city with the potential shelter village, this fair is another way the non-profit is able to connect with anyone who needs housing.

'It's wonderful because it just gives people an opportunity to get connected to different resources,' said Courtney Hayes, housing navigator for Home Sweet Home Ministries. 'If I don't have the answer, then maybe someone else does.'
Every vendor at the housing fair had the same wish.
'Everyone to have a roof over their head,' said Kimberly Massey, president of God's Mission Ministry, a street outreach group in Bloomington. 'Everyone deserves it. No matter the mental health, no matter the addiction, no matter the trauma or the story behind what got them there, we believe that everyone deserves to be housed.'

Beth Crider retires, leaving a 30-year legacy in Peoria education

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — She's off to retirement after giving a 30+ year career to education in Peoria County. Beth Crider began her teaching journey at Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Center and grew over 17 years there. She moved into leadership roles and then into administration. 'Peoria County is really like a microcosm of the state of Illinois,' said Former Regional Superintendent Beth Crider. 'You have your large city centered district. Peoria Public Schools with all of the challenges that they face. Then you have a more suburban district with Dunlap, who's only grown in size since I took over in this office. And then you have smaller districts, lots of districts and rural areas, and they have different needs. So you're trying to serve all of that with limited time, talent and treasure. You do the best you can.' Crider landed her role as the regional superintendent in 2014. She's been leading the way forward since then through technology changes, safety, and teacher retention shortages. 'When I started, email wasn't a thing,' said Crider. 'So, the transition of technology over the course of my career, I just don't think there's been any time in the history of this country that it has been so dramatic and so quick. But school safety, I would argue that Sandy Hook has been the defining moment of my entire regional superintendency, because at that moment, being a kindergarten first grade teacher myself, it hit me in a way that I just have never recovered from. And I have spent every moment trying to make sure our students are safe and to get across that finish line May 30th without a significant event will mean a lot to me. Our office is focused on that.' Upon her retirement, Crider said one thing always remained a constant priority. 'It's celebrating our students through the arts, celebrating our students academic accomplishments, celebrating them seeing out in the wild,' said Crider. 'So, I'll go to a restaurant and they'll say, Mrs. Crider, and it's so great to see them being successful and the jobs that they have. I have former students that are engineers, fellow teachers, you name it, they're out there and they're taking the world by storm. It's so exciting to see.' Dr. George McKenna is taking over for Crider after being her assistant for a decade. She said he's fit for the job and he'll stay on the right path forward for the county. Scholarship celebration honors Black college-bound seniors

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Hundreds gathered at a Bloomington church on Saturday to celebrate Black excellence in the classroom. The ceremony was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. It was sponsored by the Mentoring and Providing Scholarships Program, a local non-profit that mentors black students to learn etiquette, financial literacy and public speaking skills. More than $80,000 in scholarships were awarded to Black college-bound seniors for their academic achievements and community service. 'The annual Joint Scholarship Celebration plays an integral role in celebrating the successes of African American students,' Carla Campbell-Jackson, co-founder of MAPS, said. 'The MAPS Program is invaluable for students, and for our community, as we are developing 'real time' leaders and thought partners, who will continue to make a difference locally, and beyond.' Money for the scholarships was gathered with the help of African-American sororities, fraternities, and community-based organizations. MAPS looks to help students prepare for the professional world with important skills such as public speaking, said Shaun Harden, one of the students who received several scholarships. 'MAPS has been really great, especially for professional development. For instance, one of our previous sessions was about public speaking,' Harden said. 'We talked about how we were able to approach the stand and how we were able to address the audience properly, how to avoid filler words, a lot of different proper speaking things that you don't really get to learn other than through experience.' Local philanthropists also contributed to the scholarship fund, which helped raise more money for African American students looking to pursue higher education. Keynote speakers for the event included NAACP Image Award Winner and WMBD Summer Intern Bradley Ross Jackson and Teresa Haley, who shared some information and advice with the students. 'I learned that if you work hard, if you stay strong and determined, and continue to try to do your best and give back to the communities that have supported you, that you will eventually be rewarded in the end,' said Gabrielle Johnson, the president of the Bloomington-Normal NAACP Youth Council. Salvation Army in Penrith appeals for more volunteers due to increasing demand

THE Salvation Army in Penrith is appealing for volunteers. The church and community centre, located on Hunter Lane, already has a team of 23. Due to increasing demand, they are looking for more people to help deliver their weekly community programme. The role will include supporting coffee mornings, the lunch club and food bank. Major Carole Donaldson, church leader of The Salvation Army in Penrith said: 'Our volunteers are simply amazing and play a big part in the work that we do for our local community. Without them giving up their time to support our work we couldn't provide the services that we do, and we want to give a huge thanks to everyone who volunteers for us bringing love and energy and making a difference to those that need it. 'We believe that everyone has something that they can give, and we are keen for more volunteers to join our team with friendships made along the way, spare time filled with a purpose and an opportunity to build on skills, having a positive impact on our community. Anyone who has time to give, please get in touch as we are keen to hear from you.' For more information, you can call 01768 866732 or visit the shop.
