Despite being a classic pairing in the world of gaming, it seems that Mario and Princess Peach's relationship isn't as romantic as you might think. While many Mario games end with Peach giving Mario kiss on the cheek or baking him a nice cake, Nintendo confirmed via a post on the Nintendo Today App that the two are in fact just "good friends who help each other out whenever they can".

They're not the only Nintendo couple to receive this confusion. With The Legend of Zelda movie cast announcement confirming a 21-year-old and a 16-year-old for Zelda and Link, respectively, people were concerned about what that meant for how the pair's relationship will be portrayed on-screen. However, despite this, the two of them have rarely been portrayed as having an explicitly romantic bond.

Instead, it seems Nintendo is keen on keeping the relationships between its male and female leads strictly platonic, likely to help maintain some consistency between the various branches of media that it is now reaching out into. The Super Mario Movie stayed away from a romantic storyline between Mario and Peach, so it makes sense that the games should stay the same way.
That being said, it's still weird that the Mario cast is still happy to go around playing tennis and go-kart racing with Bowser, despite all he's done.

As I rip a chunk of rock out of the ground and use it to obliterate towers of golden roots or use an explosive rock to shatter an entire cliff face, spawning a cacophony of gold to collect raining down around me in Donkey Kong Bananza, it is impossible to ignore the hit the frame rate takes. In that moment, it almost feels good -- like in the days of the SNES when the game would chug when too many particles were on screen -- and yet in the back of my mind, I knew it would be used as a talking point for the power of the Switch 2. The original Switch was underpowered from the start, and certainly pushed well beyond its limits in the eight long years it was on the market before the Switch 2. The early years weren't too bad, with Nintendo first party games typically running perfectly fine, but near the end even Tears of the Kingdom started to make the poor Switch buckle. And we don't even need to talk about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The last thing players want to see is the second major release for the system already pushing the console to the limits.

Nintendo's latest livestreamed event is highlighting the smattering of indie games coming to the Switch consoles later this year, and the Indie World Showcase is scheduled to start on Thursday, August 7th, at 9 AM ET. Hades 2 might make an appearance, and there's a slim chance the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong might show up as well. It's a 15-minute showcase, and while I'm not expecting any earth-shattering announcements, I am looking forward to seeing the games that'll pad my Switch 2 library while I wait for news on the bigger titles like Metroid Prime 4. In its recent earnings report, Nintendo shared that it sold nearly six million Switch 2 consoles since the system's launch in June, so there are a lot of people waiting for some new games to play, indie or otherwise. Nintendo has also raised the price of the original Switch in response to US tariff policy. Even though there aren't that many Switch 2 exclusives out there yet, Nintendo, through back-to-back directs, is working to ensure people know what other games will be available to play. Battlefield 6 Beta Blows Out Queue Times After Players Flock to Game

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Battlefield 6's first beta period has just started in early access, with hundreds of thousands of players flocking to the game to try it out. The Battlefield 6 open beta starts in earnest on August 9 and runs for the entire weekend, but players who preordered the Phantom Edition of the game or subscribed to EA Play Pro are able to access it from today. That makes it all the more impressive that the numbers for the game are already so high — over 300,000 players are active in the open beta app on Steam at the time of writing, with that number likely to rise as US audiences start to wake up. That's not including players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with some estimating the real numbers could be over a million across all platforms already. EA The massive interest in the game saw queue times in-game balloon out, with some players reporting positions in the queue of over 200,000, being met with a message saying that the game servers are at maximum capacity. Thankfully, EA and DICE, the development team behind Battlefield 6, have been quick to respond to the massive player demand, assuring players in a post on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the launch of the beta that they were working on a "substantial increase in server capacity." Not long after, that assurance seemed to come to fruition, with the official Battlefield Comms X account saying that queues were returning to suitable levels and times. BF2042 received mixed reviews from critics upon its release, with a metascore as low as 61/100 on some platforms on review aggregator website Metacritic. The reaction from players was even worse, with the game quickly becoming one of the worst reviewed games on Steam. Players criticized the game's lacking features, including many features missing that were present in prior games, as well as bugs and performance issues present in the game. Another concern from players was the inclusion of Christmas-themed skins, something players thought was at odds with the game's serious tone. That's something that is said to be avoided in the new game, after it was revealed in interviews with the game's developers that Battlefield 6 won't have silly crossover costumes like that of pop culture characters often featured in games like Fortnite and Call of Duty.
