Inside The Assembly: New groundbreaking ITV show sees a panel of neurodivergent and learning-disabled people interview celebrities

Daily Mail15-05-2025

It can be hard sometimes to feel like celebrities are telling the public what they really think.
In a hyper-vigilant era of elaborately constructed online personae, hawk-eyed publicists pre-approving questions and an increasingly liberal use of crisis PR, celebrity image is more carefully controlled and curated than ever.
It is why a show like ITV 's new interview programme The Assembly is so appealing and refreshing - it cuts through all the noise.
The set-up: a large panel of neurodivergent and learning-disabled people, who grill British celebrities in a no-limits interview, on topics ranging from death, to religion, to their favourite crisps - with both funny and poignant results.
The first series, which finished on Sunday, saw guests as diverse as actors David Tennant and Danny Dyer, Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall and football commentator Gary Lineker face the no-holds-barred questioning.
It makes for some of the warmest, most sincere television in recent memory - and its creators, Michelle Singer and Stu Richards, have now spoken out about their magic formula.
The first series, which finished on Sunday, saw guests as diverse as actors David Tennant and Danny Dyer, Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall (pictured) and football commentator Gary Lineker face the no-holds-barred questioning
The executive producers said in an interview with The Independent that the idea for the show's format is based on a French programme called Les Rencontres du Papotin, which first aired in 2022.
Relatively early on in its two series, the programme managed to get French President Emmanuel Macron onboard.
He was asked whether his marriage set a bad example after he met then-married Brigitte, his 39-year-old teacher and a mother-of-three, when he was just 15.
The French politician responded, with candour: 'It's not about setting an example or not, you see? When you're in love, the choice isn't yours.'
He also joked, to laughs from the interviewers: 'She wasn't really my teacher. She was my drama teacher. It's not quite the same.'
The politician was astonishingly forthcoming - and the show's uniqueness immediately made an impact on The Assembly co-creator Stu.
A pilot, on BBC One, soon followed, in April last year, with actor Michael Sheen, 56.
He too was quizzed about his age-gap relationship, with partner Anna Lundberg, 30: 'How does it feel to be dating someone only five years older than your daughter?'

He was asked whether his marriage - he met then-married Brigitte (pictured together last month), his 39-year-old teacher and a mother-of-three, when he was 15, wedding her after he graduated - set a bad example
But it really worked. ITV took over, soon greenlighting a whole series, at the end of last year - and it began airing last month.
Everything you see on-screen is completely real, according to the executive producers - also known for Channel 4 cooking chat show Dine Hard with comedian Rosie Jones and BBC sports mockumentary I Am Darren about a fictional Paralympian.
The celebrities receive a short briefing from the crew but there are no scripts or rehearsals and all the questions do truly come from the panel themselves.
This produced the bombshell age-gap question posed to Michael in the pilot - which saw the whole room, cast and crew, go 'Ohh, holy s***', producer Michelle said.
But with no team to fly in to stop him responding, the actor was able to pause to really think and reply in a way he was happy with, she explained - and he ended up giving a wonderful response.
The question was in reference to his daughter Lily, 26, who he shares with English actress Kate Beckinsale, following their relationship from 1995 until 2003.
He has been in a relationship with Swedish actress Anna, 30, who he appeared with in BBC comedy series Staged, since 2019. They have two children together.
He was, incidentally, also quizzed about his relationship, with partner Anna Lundberg, 30: 'How does it feel to be dating someone only five years older than your daughter?' Pictured: Michael and Anna in 2019
Michael replied on The Assembly at the time: 'I think because of the age difference, I think both of us were quite surprised when we got together.
'I don't think either of us were looking for that. It's not like I've dated lots of people who are much younger than me, but you meet who you meet.
'We were very aware of what differences that might make and how they might respond to that.
'It's not like it was the easiest thing to do. We were both aware it would be difficult and challenging.
'Ultimately, we felt it was worth it because of how we felt about each other. Now we have two beautiful children together. I'm really happy.
'Because of the age difference I know I'm a older father. It does worry me. It makes me sad thinking about the time I won't have with them.
'But I think if you find someone who brings you happiness and you make them happy, you've got to go for that I think and I'm so happy we did as we have this wonderful family now.'
Some equally as powerful moments have been created on the episodes since then.
He said: 'I was a p***k and she deserved better... She had every right to throw me out. She controls everything now'
Danny tearfully revealed his wife Joanne Mas controls all their finances now, after throwing him out for his wild, drug-filled behaviour in his youth.
He said: 'I was a p***k and she deserved better... She had every right to throw me out. She controls everything now.'
Veteran Shakespeare actor David Tennant, performed a scene from Macbeth with a keen actor from the panel, while Jade Thirlwall spoke about how grounding her friendship with the late Liam Payne was in the early part of her career.
Gary Lineker, meanwhile, was quizzed on his exit from Match of the Day and how it felt when his son George was diagnosed with leukaemia.
David, Danny and Jade were all in tears by the close of the interview, which ended with musical performances from the panel - The Proclaimers' Sunshine on Leith, Primal Scream's Movin' On Up and Diana Ross's I'm Coming Out respectively.
Gary watched on, captivated, by a beautiful contemporary dance by one of the interviewers, which ended his episode.
Jade, after dubbing the process her 'favourite interview' on social media, asked for the name of each of the 35 cast members so she could hand write them a thank-you card.
In fact, all the stars wrote to the production team via their agents to express how much of an impact the show made on them.

The show's creators are perfectly aware, though, that for less genuine celebrities, an appearance on the programme - in which the stars inevitably come off well - could cynically be viewed as a mere PR opportunity.
Taking it back to the programme's origins with President Macron, Stu and Michelle laughed as they mentioned both US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer as interviewees they would love to get involved.
Any attempted PR stunt would likely soon be detected - there is no hiding from the panel, they reflected.
Ultimately, Stu hopes the programme can challenge stereotypes about disabled people, in a different and more helpful way than viewers might be used to.
It is the main aim of his disabled-led production company Rockerdale Studios, which he co-owns with his show co-creator Michelle: 'The boring way of doing that is to sit and talk about stereotypes in the actual show and look it in the eye.
'We don't do that. We make an entertaining show. And if it does nice things, then f***ing great.'
Michelle added The Assembly is about self-expression, about letting the stars show off their natural excitement - and cheeky nature: 'It isn't, "Ah, aren't they lovely? Look at people like that".'
One interviewer named Essin (pictured) - who has asked particularly hard-hitting questions about Danny's absent father and Gary's thoughts on why it is hard for gay footballers to come out - has already been recognised in the street and asked for a selfie
Stu explained: 'It's being given agency and power to be the subject of something rather than the sort of object of our sympathy.'
The panel have loved the experience, the producers said - and have already begun to develop a celebrity status of their own.

It seems what Danny said near the end of his episode may ring remarkably true: 'Listen, I will say this. You better prepare yourself for a bit of fame, you lot, 'cause I think this show is gonna be f***ing massive.'
The Assembly is available to stream on ITVX.

BREAKING NEWS Alice Liveing is pregnant! Fitness influencer is congratulated by Carrie Johnson and Vicky Pattison as she reveals she's expecting first child - after concerning fans with A&E dash

Fitness influencer Alice Liveing has revealed she's pregnant. The vlogger, 32, shared the joyous news in an Instagram post on Sunday, with a video of herself cradling her growing baby bump and cuddling up to husband Patrick Murphy. Alongside the sweet video, Alice penned: 'Some news we wanted to share with you. 'I appreciate that the journey to get here can be a hard one. And seeing this news isn't always easy. My heart, and love go to anyone still there. 'I haven't wanted to hide this from you, but for various reasons and anxieties which I won't go in to now we've wanted to wait a little longer and I hope you can understand that.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Alice continued: 'We're both so excited, and filled with hope and love for our next chapter, and can't wait to take you along with us. I'm due October so the countdown is truly on. 'Big big love and I cannot wait to get back to sharing so much more soon.' Alice was immediately inundated with well-wishes from her celebrity pals, with Vicky Pattison writing: 'Oh wow!!! This is incredible news congratulations ♥️'. while Boris Johnson's wife Carrie commented: 'Oh I'm so so so pleased for you Alice ❤️'. Katie Piper added: 'Huge congratulations so happy for you ❤️'; as Kirsty Gallagher penned: 'Congratulations lovely news ❤️' and Frida Redknapp commented: 'Wonderful and exciting news.' Alice's joyous news comes after she concerned fans by revealing that she was rushed to A&E after a routine GP check-up. The blogger, who rose to fame with her Alice-with-the-abs persona, took to Instagram Story last week to share the health update with fans. Alice revealed she had been taking to Accident and Emergency after a mystery ailment arose during a routine appointment. Sharing a snap from her hospital bed with a cannula in her arm, Alice wrote: 'What a weird old day. Routine GP appointment turned a quick trip to A&E. The NHS is amazing and I'm always in awe of everyone who keeps it running.' Alice added with another selfie: 'Not the dramatic day I was expecting, but also makes you 10x more grateful for everything.' Sharing that she had since been discharged, Alice posted a photo of lunch of anchovies, dill and caper on toast with the caption: 'Home and grateful for health.' But on Tuesday, Alice said the 'saga' was continuing as doctors were unsure what was wrong with her - but assured fans it wasn't life-threatening. 'The saga continues today because basically they're not quite sure what's going on,' she said. 'At some point I'll obviously talk about it all, but only when I've actually got a clue what the situation is. 'Anyway, it's not crazily dramatic or life-threatening so I'm fine. I'm just obviously worried and want some answers.' Getting candid about her health last year with The Sunday Times, she reflected on her previous 'Alice-with-the-abs' persona, which saw her front her Instagram content with a muscular yet tiny frame. But Alice revealed that her weight dropped so low, her periods stopped. Despite becoming a hugely successful cookbook author and receiving publishing deals that celebrity chefs would envy, Alice has revealed that her dedication to so-called 'clean eating'; left her sleeping badly, with thinning hair and 'terrible' skin. She has revealed she was 25 years old and had just met her now-husband Paddy when she visited a fertility specialist to find out why her periods had stopped; but she was shocked by the doctor's assessment. 'She told me, "You're not eating enough and doing too much exercise, your body is in a state of stress and if you carry on you won't be able to have children." Those words changed my life,' Alice said. But on Tuesday, Alice said the 'saga' was continuing as doctors were unsure what was wrong with her - but assured fans it wasn't life-threatening Following the news she might struggle to conceive, Alice began following a programme to gain 10kg which saw her exercising less and eating more. However, as she slowly put on weight, the influencer has revealed she struggled to always stick to the programme and fell back into 'bad behaviours' from time to time. As she changed her life, so too did her career, and Alice dropped 'Clean Eating' from her Instagram title in 2017. Now Alice's page is full off encouraging images of a woman of a healthy weight encouraging others to improve their strength and fuel their bodies accordingly. She has just penned her newest book, Give Me Strength (which is also the name of her fitness app) but has revealed the process of writing it was 'painful'. Alice said: 'I bear a lot of responsibility for perpetuating a potentially damaging narrative.' She added she didn't realise what she was doing was 'wrong' but added she can now 'own her mistakes'. Looking back on her life as Clean Eating Alice, the influencer revealed she was often exhausted and in private, avoided social events that involved food or made excuses about having already eaten when she did attend dinners. Despite this, Alice would pretend differently online and sometimes posted snaps of enjoying pizza with her friends on Instagram (even though she had ordered a salad for dinner). 'That's the bit I feel guiltiest about — I was lying, being disingenuous,' she said, adding that her previous Instagram life was 'smoke and mirrors'. The influencer tracks her issues with food back to being a student at theatre school. After a year of boozing and eating junk food, as many students do, Alice claims one of her tutors told her she should be 'conscious of her body' if she ever wanted to pursue showbusiness seriously. The words clearly stung as Alice took a personal training course, began dieting, and dropped from a size 12 to a size 8 within months. She opened her Instagram account alongside her body transformation and it rapidly gained several thousands of followers. At 22, and, in her words, with 'no qualifications to write a book', she was offered 'life changing money' to author books on clean eating and weight loss. Now, as Alice embarks upon a new mission encouraging people to be healthy rather than to 'eat clean' she has suggested that some people within the 'fitspo' community are struggling with the same food issues she once had to deal with. However for Alice herself, she finds 'joy' in both life and food.

Katie Piper reveals dine and dash date left her with £740 restaurant tab after doing a runner

Katie Piper has revealed a date once left her with a £740 restaurant tab after running off due to her facial disfigurement. The British author and TV presenter, 41, was the victim of a horrific acid attack set up by her ex-boyfriend when she was 24 - leaving her with severe scarring to her face, neck, chest, arms and hands. Speaking at the Hay Festival, Piper recalled the shocking moment a man she had met in a bar invited her to the famously expensive Japanese restaurant Nobu in central London, before doing a runner. 'We'd met on a night out. I'd had pioneering treatment with incredible results, so when I would go out somewhere with dark lighting, where people were very drunk, often they weren't able to see what I fully looked like,' she said. 'So I met this guy and we messaged for quite a long time. He suggested we go out for dinner. I hated going out for dinner because I had a lot of oesophageal damage and often I'd choke when I ate, so the whole idea of eating in front of someone on a first date was nerve-wracking, but I agreed.' The date took place in summer so it was daylight, the star said, and she realised straight away the man had not realised she had a facial disfigurement when first meeting her in the bar. The date had chosen the dinner location and ordered a three-course meal, Piper added. 'He said, ''I've seen some people I know over there, I'm going to go and say hi to them and I'll be back''. He didn't come back.' Piper, now happily married and a mother-of-two, said she ran through 'ridiculous excuses' as she sat at the table, considering if the man might have suddenly become ill. She didn't have a lot of money at the time - living on disability benefit after the attack - but ended up paying the £740 bill on her own. Shockingly, Piper said the man got back in touch with her years later after seeing her on Strictly Come Dancing, not to offer an apology but to joke: 'We must catch up!' The mother said she wishes she had replied with a more assertive response but simply replied: 'Lol yeah, let's do that. Haha.' Since the attack, Piper has been a fierce advocate for the well-being and inclusion of survivors of burns and traumatic scarring. She believes in the importance of improved after-care, rehabilitation, and a world where scars do not hinder a person's quality of life.
