National Doctors' Day: Let's honour not just the doctors we see, but also the many whose critical work happens beyond the spotlight
As India celebrates National Doctors' Day on July 1, it's a moment to reflect not just on the resilience and expertise of our healthcare heroes but also on the quiet revolutions they continue to lead—especially in maternal care. From monitoring fetal health to preserving stem cells and managing gut-related complications in pregnancy, doctors across specializations are ensuring safer motherhood and healthier futures for generations to come.
Consider this: in 1947, India's infant mortality rate stood at a staggering 145 per 1,000 live births. Today, it has dropped to 27. This dramatic progress is a testament to the relentless work of doctors particularly obstetricians who have continuously pushed boundaries to improve maternal and child healthcare.
'Obstetricians practicing at advanced healthcare centres are constantly leveraging technology to make childbirth safer," says Dr. Mitul Gupta, Senior Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Cocoon Hospital, Jaipur. 'One such tool is Continuous Fetal Monitoring (CTG), which allows doctors to assess fetal well-being during labor by tracking the baby's heart rate alongside uterine contractions. This early detection of distress significantly reduces adverse perinatal outcomes."
Biotechnology: A New Frontier in Obstetrics
Technology is not only aiding safer deliveries—it is also future-proofing lives. One of the most remarkable advances is stem cell preservation. 'Today, mothers can choose to preserve their baby's stem cells, which are collected from the umbilical cord at birth. These cells are capable of protecting the child and even close family members from life-threatening diseases like certain cancers," explains Dr. Gupta. 'As awareness and accessibility grow across India, stem cell preservation will become a powerful tool in the doctor's arsenal, potentially saving many lives in the years ahead."
The Unsung Role of Gastroenterologists in Maternal Health
While obstetricians take the spotlight in childbirth, gastroenterologists also play an often-overlooked but critical role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy. 'From managing common concerns like nausea, constipation, and morning sickness to treating more serious conditions such as gestational gallstones and liver diseases, our role may not be front-facing, but it is vital," says Dr. Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant – Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.
In a country where nutritional deficiencies, hepatitis, and pregnancy-related liver disorders are increasingly common, gastroenterologists act as essential gatekeepers of maternal health. 'We help ensure the mother's digestive system functions optimally so that her pregnancy remains complication-free. In high-risk cases, our interventions can prevent outcomes that could silently threaten both mother and baby," adds Dr. Vatsya.
He also notes that while aesthetic concerns like pigmentation and dull skin often dominate pregnancy conversations, the underlying issues can sometimes stem from poor gut health. 'A referral to a gastroenterologist can help address the root cause, not just the symptoms, restoring health and vitality during pregnancy."
A Collective Mission for Safer Motherhood
The journey of motherhood is intricate, and ensuring it is safe requires a collective effort—from obstetricians and gastroenterologists to pediatricians, anesthesiologists, and more. 'Safer motherhood is the biggest achievement any nation can claim," says Dr. Vatsya. 'And every doctor, whether at the forefront or working quietly behind the scenes—contributes to this cause."
This National Doctors' Day, let's honour not just the doctors we see, but also the many whose critical work happens beyond the spotlight yet directly shapes the health of mothers and babies across India.

Dieticians back traditional Indian foods for lactating mothers, but with a scientific twist

Nagpur: Clinical dieticians and doctors trained in modern medicine are now advocating the use of traditional Indian postnatal foods like 'gond laddoos', and dry fruits to support lactation, but with necessary modifications rooted in science. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking during World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7), the Indian Dietetic Association (IDA), Nagpur Chapter and NetProFan, Nagpur Chapter, jointly emphasised that traditional foods, long trusted by Indian households, can still be effective in boosting milk production if consumed in a modern, balanced form. "Traditional Indian postnatal diets were rich in ghee and sugar, aimed at restoring strength and enhancing lactation. But given current issues like postpartum weight gain, gestational diabetes, and anaemia, we need to update these recipes for today's mothers," said Dr Renuka Mainde, convener of NetProFan, Nagpur Chapter. "Instead of consuming heavy ghee-laden laddoos, we now recommend powdered versions of the same ingredients — like gond, nuts, and seeds — with milk or porridge. This maintains nutritional value without adding health risks," she said. Dr Kavita Bakshi, convener of IDA, Nagpur Chapter, added, "Some mothers struggle to produce enough milk due to poor nutrition. Foods like oats, almonds, flaxseeds, fennel, papaya, and leafy greens — rich in B-vitamins, iron, and healthy fats — are natural galactagogues. But all of this should be part of a balanced diet, and not a replacement for proper medical advice." Dr Kavita Gupta, secretary of IDA, Nagpur Chapter, explained how breastfeeding benefits extend to both mother and child. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "It improves glucose tolerance, reduces risk of diabetes and breast cancer, and lowers high blood pressure in women with hyperglycemia in pregnancy. The longer the duration, the better the benefit," Gupta said. She also cautioned lactating women with diabetes to consult doctors before taking any medicines. "Insulin remains the safest, but Metformin and Glipizide are also considered safe in breastfeeding as they do not significantly pass into breast milk," Gupta said. Chanchal Sahani, joint secretary, IDA, Nagpur, pointed out the added value of breast milk in building a baby's immunity, brain development, and emotional bonding while being eco-friendly and cost-effective. "Breastfeeding is a skill. Proper latch and positioning not only help the baby feed better but also prevent problems like nipple pain, engorgement, and low supply," said Shalini Kotamkar, Life Member of IDA. BOX DIETICIANS SUGGEST * Gond laddoos should be consumed in powdered form with milk or porridge instead of heavy ghee-rich pieces * Use unsaturated fats from nuts and seeds instead of excess ghee * Include iron-rich leafy vegetables, pulses, and whole grains to combat anaemia * Avoid fried snacks with trans fats that delay postnatal recovery * Balance sugar intake in traditional sweets to prevent postpartum weight gain and blood sugar spikes

Delhi gets Rs 821 cr as special Central assistance for projects

New Delhi: In a major boost to infrastructure and public services, the Delhi government has received ₹821.26 crore in special assistance from the central government. Of this, 66 percent of the amount has already been released. The funds will support 33 major development projects across sectors such as health, education, transport, water, housing, energy, and mass rapid transit. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared the development on social media, thanking the Centre for the financial support. She said the assistance will play a crucial role in strengthening Delhi's infrastructure and transforming the capital in line with the broader national vision of a 'Viksit Bharat.' 'This decision is a visionary step toward turning the vision of ' Viksit Bharat' into 'Viksit Delhi.' With this funding, we will move ahead on key projects that will directly benefit the people of the city,' Gupta said. She emphasized that the Delhi government is committed to completing these projects in a timely, transparent, and high-quality manner. Among the projects to be implemented with this funding are initiatives under health, education, water supply, housing, and the ongoing MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) Phase-4. Gupta also acknowledged the ongoing support from the Centre, stating that the 'double engine government' — referring to cooperative governance between the state and central leadership, has consistently contributed to Delhi's development. In recent statements, Gupta outlined her administration's commitment to expanding health services and digital healthcare access. Over 93 lakh Ayushman Bharat Digital Health ID cards have already been issued in Delhi, enabling residents to share medical records digitally with hospitals and doctors. The government has also set a target of opening more than 1,100 'Ayushman Arogya Mandirs' by March 2026 to strengthen local healthcare access.

Food Safety Department Makes Feedback App Mandatory For Sweet Shops In Prayagraj

Authorities at the Food Safety Department have issued a directive regarding sweet shops in Sangam city, Prayagraj. As per the new orders, a consumer satisfaction feedback app is now compulsory for all sweet shop owners. The initiative aims to enhance accountability and transparency in the food industry for the benefit of consumers in Sangam. According to a report by the Times of India, more than 100 prominent sweet shops in Sangam have been instructed to encourage customers to use the application. This effort is part of a larger plan arranged by officials in the Food Safety Department. Through the app, they intend to use technology for better regulation and faster grievance redressal. The goal is to make food outlets prioritise customer feedback and quickly address hygiene or safety issues, if any. A senior member of the Food Safety Department revealed that the team has already asked traders of the Prayagraj Sweets & Namkeen Welfare Association to promote a customer feedback app before the festive season. He added that the traders were also informed about the customer satisfaction feedback, which is now mandatory to display outside every sweet shop. Additionally, shop owners were asked to put up a display containing details from the Oil and Sugar Boards, indicating the amount of oil and sugar each item contains. Apart from that, they were also advised to reduce the use of food colouring in sweets and namkeen bakery products. Ankit Gupta, who owns a well-known sweet shop in Sangam, told the Times of India that they are spreading awareness about the Food Safety Connect app among consumers. He shared that he has put up banners and posters outside all their outlets to encourage customer feedback. Gupta further mentioned that most members of the Prayagraj Sweet & Namkeen Welfare Association have been following the same orders at their respective shops. Moreover, Ankit Gupta pointed out that since obesity has become a serious health issue affecting people across ages and increasing the risk of diabetes, heart problems, and high blood pressure, among others, he and his team are actively participating in efforts to raise awareness about obesity.
