Village postmaster's dad named as Air India victim
The father of the village postmaster has been named among those who died in the Air India plane crash last week. Kirit Patel was killed when the London-bound Air India plane crashed soon after taking off on Thursday from Ahmedabad, along with 240 other passengers. His son Umang, who runs the post office in Pensford on the outskirts of Bristol with his wife Vaishali, has flown to India and a crowdfunder has been launched by locals to help him. Jim Beacham, a local resident who came up with the idea to raise money, said: "The shop is losing money and it's costing them a fortune. We got to go some way to try and recompense." "It doesn't help about losing his dad but at least he knows people really love and respect him. "During covid they were incredible, they kept the whole place going with deliveries. People remember that. "I'm surprised by the support and it's wonderful people would do this." Paul Hunt, a local resident, said: "Umang has been a great guy in our village since he came here. "I was absolutely distraught when I heard it." Jonquil Anderson, who lives in the village, said: "It shows how important the family are in the village. We all go in there every day." In total 270 bodies have been recovered from the site of the plane crash. 100 hours have passed since an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed, killing all but one of the passengers and crew. Among the 242 on board were 53 British nationals, with many living across London, and work has since been underway to identify the bodies, Here we remember those Londoners who have so far been confirmed as losing their lives on June 12. Council leader Kam Rai said: "Whilst we await more details, I am aware of reports that a local person lost their life and family members of local people have also died. 'My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of all those affected." Briton Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only survivor of the crash. His older brother Ajay was also reportedly on the flight. Speaking outside the family home in Leicester, Jay, a relative of the brothers, said Vishwash spoke to his father after the crash and asked after his brother. 'Technical issue' forces Air India Boeing 787 to turn back to Hong Kong
June 16 (UPI) -- An Air India Boeing 787-8 flight headed for New Delhi returned to Hong Kong shortly after takeoff Monday because of a "technical issue," Indian media reported. The issue occurred just days after a similar Dreamliner crashed into buildings in Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing at least 279 people in the aircraft and on the ground. It was the first Dreamliner crash and only one passenger survived. "A passenger flight, AI315, operated by Air India from Hong Kong to New Delhi made a return to Hong Kong International Airport and requested local standby at around 1p.m. today," a spokesperson for Airport Authority Hong Kong said. Air India said in a statement that the plane returned to undergo checks "as a matter of abundant precaution." Some aviation analysts believe the wing flaps on the plane that crashed were not in the correct position. "It looked like the jet struggled to maintain lift," Dan Bubb, a longtime pilot and now airline historian at the University of Nevada, said. "Some pilots have speculated that the flaps may not have been set to the takeoff position. Historically, there have been crashes when flaps weren't properly configured." Authorities have ordered Air India to carry out more safety checks on all Boeing 787s. The Dreamliner has flown commercially since 2011.
