Patriots $104 million DT reveals crucial training camp plans
New England Patriots defensive tackle Milton Williams revealed his plans for training camp, starting with a trip back home to Texas to begin training immediately.
Williams signed a historic four-year, $104 million contract with the Patriots in free agency, and he plans on repaying them with his performance on the football field. That all starts with preparing the right way over the break and coming back to training camp in shape.
'Go back to Texas and do my training. Make sure I come back into training camp in tip-top shape and ready to go,' Williams said, via MassLive's Mark Daniels. 'I'm ready to use some of this physicality. We've got to rush and then stop. (This spring) we've got to let the quarterback throw the ball. I'll come around and be ready for sure.'
Williams is coming off a Super Bowl-winning season with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he'll be looking to help anchor a Patriots defensive line that struggled last year.
The unit should be much improved in 2025 with Williams and a healthy Christian Barmore in the mix. They also drafted Florida State standout defensive tackle Joshua Farmer, along with making upgrades at linebacker and edge rusher.
On paper, the Patriots' defense looks like one of the better units in the league. We'll get a sense of how high the ceiling is when they return from the break and put the pads on for training camp.

Christian McCaffrey Hopes Longer Offseason Leads to Better Health in 2025
The biggest beneficiary of an extended NFL offseason for the San Francisco 49ers just might have been star running back Christian McCaffrey. A year after he was limited to just four games because of injuries to his Achilles tendon and knee, the engine of San Francisco's high-powered offense was on the practice field for the offseason program and is hoping to get back to the form that made him AP Offensive Player of the Year during a run to the Super Bowl in the 2023 season. A healthy McCaffrey would be a key component for San Francisco to rebound from a 6-11 season that at least provided a side benefit of more time off in the winter following three straight years of long playoff runs. "Being fully transparent, obviously, last year didn't go the way I wanted," McCaffrey said. "It didn't go the way anyone wanted. But having this time off has allowed me to start from scratch and have the time where I can build a base again, come into OTAs, play football and now get back into it mentally, emotionally, physically in all ways. It was much needed and I'm happy we had it." McCaffrey plans to spend the long break before training camp starts in late July staying in shape and becoming a father. McCaffrey and his wife, model Olivia Culpo, are expecting their first child "right around the corner." McCaffrey looked fresh during the offseason program after sitting it out last year as he recovered from a grueling season and waited for a new contract that came last June. McCaffrey had 798 touches from scrimmage in 2023-24 in the regular season and playoffs — more than 100 more than any other player in the league during that span. That workload likely contributed to the Achilles tendinitis that sidelined McCaffrey early in training camp last season and forced him to miss the first eight games of the season. He then injured his posterior cruciate ligament in his fourth game back and missed the final five games of the season. With McCaffrey on the sideline, an offense that was the most dangerous in the league following his arrival midway through the 2022 season took a step back last season as the Niners struggled overall. Coach Kyle Shanahan said he is aware that he needs to manage McCaffrey's workload this summer in order "to protect him from himself" and make sure he's healthy and fresh when the games count. "He does everything imaginable every single day," Shanahan said. "Last year he couldn't because he was battling injury all last year, and this year he is healthy, so he is right back to being who he has always been — and it's really fun to watch." McCaffrey, who turned 29 earlier this month, said the key as he ages is finding the "middle ground" of doing the intense work to get ready for a season and making sure he doesn't wear down early. But once he's on the field, he knows only one speed. "My job is to put my body in the best position it can to go out there and be me," he said. "There's a lot of noise and sometimes there [are] a lot of things going on. My job is to go 100% every play and continue to get better. I just try to focus on that." Former 49ers QB says San Francisco played offseason 'perfectly'
The San Francisco 49ers were arguably the biggest underachievers in the NFL in 2024, going from a 12-5 team that narrowly lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl to 6-11 and finishing in last place in the NFC West. San Francisco's lack of success last year, brought them into the offseason with a ton of decisions to make, including which of their pending free agents to sign or let walk, who to target from other teams in free agency, who to extend that was still under contract, who to trade and who to draft. Over the last few months, the team has made some massive changes, firing defensive coordinator Nick Sorenson, hiring Robert Saleh to replace him, letting Dre Green law, Aaron Banks, Talanoa Hufanga and Charvarius Ward leave in free agency and trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. While there have been mixed reviews of San Francisco's offseason, to this point, former 49ers quarterback Steve Young is thrilled with what his team has done. 'I'm very happy with how they handled the offseason,' Young told Rich Eisen on the 'Rich Eisen Show.' 'They had a clear plan. It was retooling. It wasn't a complete restructure, but it was a retooling. Every move was tactical and smart and fast. And signing everybody and getting everybody on board. I just thought they handled the offseason perfectly. 'And now what has to happen is your veterans need to stay healthy. Trent Williams is number one. If Trent Williams goes down, that offensive line is no longer a top-five offensive line in the league. But with Trent, you can survive it. Now, if all of your veterans stay healthy, you've got all your rookies that need to pop. The [Los Angeles] Rams got it with Puka Nacua, and now all of a sudden, they're back in the mix. And that needs to happen [for the 49ers].' Injuries were a huge part of San Francisco's struggles in 2024, with Williams, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Javon Hargrave, Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk missing significant time. As Young points out, if most of the 49ers' stars can be on the field for the majority of the season, they should see better results, and seeing some young players pop, like first-round pick Mykel Williams, in 2025 could get them back to the postseason and erase the memory of an abysmal year. Patriots rookie TreVeyon Henderson reveals what RB he's been studying
Patriots rookie TreVeyon Henderson reveals what RB he's been studying New England Patriots rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson revealed who he's been studying as he gets acclimated to the Patriots offense. Here's one hint: it's a three-time Super Bowl-winning running back. 'James White. Shoot, he dang near looked like a receiver. He was a great running back here," Henderson responded, when asked what previous player he was studying to prepare for Josh McDaniels' offense, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. Henderson has a unique blend of running ability, as well as pass-catching and blocking skills. He's a legitimate triple-threat option for the team in the offensive backfield. White, an All-Dynasty player, was an all-around athlete who always shined in the biggest moments for the Patriots. Henderson is hoping to pick up the mantle as the next do-everything running back in New England. One wrinkle to his game that the Patriots haven't had is the speed. Henderson is a potential home run threat every time he touches the ball. That kind of talent could ultimately help spark a Patriots offense looking to break out in 2025.
