The New York Mets ended their seven-game losing streak with plenty of offense against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, spearheaded by their $765 million man. Juan Soto went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI in the 11-4 victory, and the Mets are now tied with the Phillies atop the NL East.

The four-time All-Star got off to a slow start this season, hitting .232 in April and .219 in May. However, he was hitting .300 in June before Saturday's outburst, and he now has six games in the month with multiple hits.
Soto was asked postgame if this is the best he's felt all season, via SNY.

"I've been feeling good since day one," the 26-year-old said. "Things just haven't gone my way, finally I'm getting some luck and going from there."
He's now slashing .256/.393/.484 with 16 homers and 41 RBI over 76 games this season.
Fellow outfielder Brandon Nimmo added two solo home runs on Saturday, and shortstop Francisco Lindor also hit a solo shot. Starting pitcher Griffin Canning allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings, and the bullpen tossed a shutout the rest of the way.

This sets up a rubber match on Sunday night with the division lead on the line. Southpaw hurler David Peterson (5-2, 2.60 ERA) will start against Phillies southpaw Jesus Luzardo (6-3, 4.41 ERA), and the game will be on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. EST.
After that, the Mets will host the Atlanta Braves before hitting the road to play the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Philadelphia 10-year-old heading to New York to compete in NBA math board game championship

Philly 10-year-old's skill at NBA board game earns her a trip to New York Philly 10-year-old's skill at NBA board game earns her a trip to New York Philly 10-year-old's skill at NBA board game earns her a trip to New York Most kids dream of making it to the NBA for their basketball skills, but a Philadelphia student is earning recognition for her skill with numbers. Ten-year-old Riley, from Philadelphia, has been playing NBA Math Hoops, a board game that combines sports stats with math problems. She's gotten so good that she's now one of just 24 students selected from across the country to compete in the NBA Math Hoops Global Championship in New York City this weekend. "I love math. I love the challenge and the difficulty," Riley said. The game is part of a program created by Philadelphia nonprofit Learn Fresh. CEO Nick Monzi says the goal is to use sports to help kids sharpen their math skills. "Sports can really motivate learning because there's so much data in games like basketball," Monzi said. Riley has had some help along the way from her older brother, but this weekend she's rolling the dice solo. "I'm nervous to compete against other kids and meet new people," she admitted. Despite the nerves, she says math is helping her dream big — she already knows she wants to become a nurse, inspired by her aunt. Riley and other students will get a taste of the big leagues, too — their packed weekend includes sightseeing, the NBA Draft, and a tour of NBA headquarters. Also representing our region is Jace Porter from Laurel, Delaware. Good luck, Riley and Jace!

Mets demote second former top prospect in two days

For the second straight day, the New York Mets have demoted a former top prospect to the minor leagues. The Mets optioned infielder Luisangel Acuna to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. The younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. has started just five times over the last month due to offensive struggles, collecting only 18 at-bats in June. Advertisement Luisangel Acuna was slashing .308/.357/.385 through April with five doubles, but his numbers dropped dramatically in May when he hit .204/.254/.222. June brought more struggles at .167/.211/.167. Overall this season, Acuna carries a .241/.293/.283 line with no home runs and a poor 68 OPS+ — meaning he was 32% worse than the league average hitter. The Mets called up veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski to fill his roster spot. Acuna joins catcher Francisco Alvarez in Syracuse after Alvarez was sent down Sunday before the Mets' series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. Alvarez has struggled at the plate all season, hitting .236/.319/.333 with just three home runs and 38 strikeouts in 35 games. He fractured the hamate bone in his left hand during spring training and didn't make his season debut until April 25. Advertisement Just two seasons ago, Alvarez hit 25 home runs. The Mets hope to get both players back on track offensively as they are part of the young core the team will need to rely on later this season and potentially in the playoffs. Related Headlines
