80s themed Life Savers gala raises $150K for cancer patients
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – An annual fundraiser helps patients who must travel for cancer treatment.
Thursday night, the Life Savers gala inside the Silver Lake Ballroom raises money to support the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Proceeds go toward renovations at the McDade House, a hospitality home for patients to stay while receiving outpatient care.
This year's gala theme was 'best 80s fashion.'
LSU Health said FWCC serves an area with immense need and some of the highest incidences of cancer in the nation.

'After opening the doors of the McDade House in 1985 and for decades thereafter, theMcDades and so many others provided a place of rest for weary families, while lovedones received nearby medical treatment. Members of our family were thrilled to learnFeist-Weiller had plans to reopen it,' said Taunton Melville and Gary Moore, honorarychairs of Life Savers 2025.
'With significant updates to the original building, the McDade House will once more operate at a first-class level – a reflection and continuation of the legacy of past generations.'
This year, Life Savers raised more than $150,000 thanks to the generosity ofsponsors and patrons. All the proceeds will be directed to Feist-Weiller's $2.1M capitalcampaign to restore the home and bring it back into operation.

‘Beyond Camp' gives students a summer of discovery and support
CADDO PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS)—For more than twenty years, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Services Program in Caddo Parish has hosted Beyond Camp, a summer camp designed specifically for students experiencing homelessness. It offers them a season full of enrichment, exploration, and support. 'Beyond Camp is a federally funded program created to support students who are experiencing homelessness by giving them experiences and opportunities they might not otherwise have,' said Dr. Norcha Lacy, Supervisor of the McKinney-Vento Program for Caddo Parish Schools. Support children's hospitals through 'Spark Good' health campaign 'When we asked them what their favorite part was, they all said the field trips, because they went on one every day. They were able to experience things they wouldn't normally be able to experience in their normal lives, so we provide those experiences and opportunities for them during our camp,' Dr. Lacy shared. From hands-on learning to daily adventures, the camp allows children to learn, grow, and enjoy being kids during summer. Legislative town hall to keep Texarkana citizens engaged in state politics
TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) — A political advocacy group invited the community to a legislative town hall on Monday. Federal agencies come to Texarkana to provide in-person storm recovery aid 'We're doing town halls across the state to help educate people about the Arkansas Legislature, which just adjourned, about all the new laws that they passed and educating people about how their legislators voted on some of those key bills that came up,' said Bill Kopsky, Executive Director of the Arkansas Public Policy Panel, who organized the event along with Citizens First Congress. They are applauding legislation passed concerning maternal health and childhood nutrition. 'We're excited about students getting free breakfast, and now we're saying, how about lunch?' said April Reisma, President of the Arkansas Education Association. However, they feel other new pieces of legislation, such as DEI restrictions, are a step backward for the state. 'Our view is that if you're in a community that's 60% black and the school staff doesn't look like that, then that's an issue that the school district should be able to at least talk about,' said Kopsky. Changes coming to downtown Texarkana in the name of pedestrian safety Looking to the future, they hope to find support for securing access to ballot measures after several new laws were passed that make the process more difficult. 'I mean it's been in the Arkansas constitution for over 100 years. Arkansans have used it to do really important things that legislators just aren't capable of doing, so like passing ethics and term limit laws, for example, or campaign finance reform laws, or raising the state's minimum wage. Those are issues that politicians are never going to really take much action on, but they're not very controversial with the public,' said Kopsky. They say the main purpose of these town halls is to keep citizens engaged in the political process. Over 1 million meals served by Texarkana Resource Center during first year 'Legislators or politicians go up to Little Rock and they make decisions on a lot of laws that the public doesn't really have any idea about, and our whole view is that when the public knows more about what's happening at the Capitol and they can talk to the legislators about it, those legislators do a better job,' said Kopsky. Shreveport wanted suspect assaults male in convenience store
DISCLAIMER: All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. CADDO PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Authorities are searching for a white male involved in an assault at a convenience store located in the 1400 block of Hollywood Avenue in Shreveport. The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office reported that a white male attacked a Hispanic male at a local convenience store. The suspect approached the victim from behind and punched him once while he was on the phone. Ark-La-Tex most wanted Investigators said that the suspect may have fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV. The Hispanic male sustained severe facial trauma and was transported to the LSU Health Science Center.
