Lucknow: Accused in rape of 3-year-old girl, killed in encounter with police
LUCKNOW: Hours after the abduction and rape of a three-year-old girl sleeping with her mother under a bridge near Alambagh metro station, the accused was killed in an encounter with Lucknow police early Friday.
The accused, identified as Deepak Verma, a habitual offender with multiple criminal cases lodged across city police stations, was traced through CCTV footage that captured him fleeing with the child on a white scooter around 3.30 am on Thursday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) Ashish Srivastava said multiple police teams were formed immediately after the incident, and a reward of ₹1 lakh was announced for information leading to Verma's arrest.
Based on the scooter's registration details and a tip-off, police intercepted Verma near Devi Kheda in Cantonment.
'When asked to surrender, he opened fire at the police team. In retaliatory firing, he sustained injuries,' said Srivastava.
Verma was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, the minor survivor, who suffered severe injuries to her private parts, remains critical and is being treated at Lokbandhu Hospital.
Doctors confirmed she lost significant blood and will require plastic surgery. 'She is under treatment at KGMU," said the DCP.
To recall, a case had been filed under rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (
POCSO Act
), 2012.
The incident had come to the fore when officers from One Stop, an organisation supporting women, notified police around 10 am on Thursday after a handicapped person heard the girl's screams about 500 metres from where she was sleeping and informed the victim's family.
The victim's family narrated, 'After completing the work, we slept. Late at night on Wednesday, someone took the girl away. At 4 am on Thursday, an old man woke us up, and then we came to know about the incident.'
The family took the girl to Lokbandhu hospital, where doctors confirmed she had been raped and was in critical condition. Dr Rajiv Dixit, medical superintendent, said the child bled profusely from a deep wound in her private part, and her overall condition remained critical. The girl would require plastic surgery, with experts including a gynaecologist, paediatrician, and surgeon involved in her care.
She is currently under treatment at KGMU trauma center.

"She had only gone to deliver some ice to our relatives. They said she stayed for five minutes and left. But she never came back. We looked everywhere. Finally, someone told us she was seen entering a house nearby. That's where we found her in a suitcase," he said. The girl's father alleged that when he reached the house, it was locked. Suspecting something was wrong, he broke the lock and entered the room. Inside, he found his daughter stuffed in a bloodstained suitcase. They rushed her to a local clinic, but the doctor asked them to take her to a hospital immediately. At Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital in Shastri Park, doctors declared her brought dead, the father said. A PCR call reporting the incident was received at Dayalpur police station around 8.41 pm, police said. A police team was immediately dispatched to Gali No. 2, Nehru Vihar, where they learned that the girl had already been taken to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital by her father, a senior police officer said. Vehicles were seen taking alternate routes, and several emergency services faced delays due to the road blockade. The victim's mother was seen inconsolable and in a state of deep shock. "She was crying and screaming 'bring back my daughter...'," a neighbour said, holding back tears. The victim's father said he was devastated and demanded justice. "We got to know about what happened very late. The police came around 1 am and collected evidence from the house. But the main accused is still roaming free. I will not rest until he is punished," he said.

Minor girl killed after ‘sexual assault' in North East Delhi, probe on to nab accused
A minor girl was allegedly murdered after being sexually assaulted in North East Delhi Saturday evening, the Delhi Police said. According to the police, a call regarding the sexual assault of the minor was received at about 8.41 pm Saturday. 'Upon reaching the location, the police team found that a minor girl in an unconscious condition was present there,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ashish Mishra said. The girl's father took the victim to the JPC Hospital, where the doctors declared her dead and a possible victim of sexual assault. 'Prima facie, the attending doctors at the hospital observed visible injuries on her face and alleged sexual assault,' DCP Mishra said. The crime and forensic team have now begun inspecting the crime scene to apprehend the accused. Meanwhile, a case has been registered under sections 103 (1) [murder], 66 [punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state of the victim], and 13 (2) [enhanced punishment for repeat offenders], of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Pocso Act. In April this year, a 14-year-old boy from Uttarakhand, who was in Delhi to attend a sports event, was allegedly sexually assaulted by several other participants at a club in Outer North Delhi, the police had said. After the incident came to light, an 18-year-old was arrested, and five other minors were apprehended, the police added. Meanwhile, crime data shared by the Delhi Police shows that rape cases registered were 370 between January 1 to March 31 in 2025, down by 18.68 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, when it was 455. In 2023, the number of cases was 422 during the same period. Molestation cases for the first three months of 2025 also saw a dip of 14.63 per cent to 379 compared to 2024, when it was 444, and 30.71 per cent compared to 2023, when it was 547.

Boyfriend, four others arrested for coercing minor girl to abort pregnancy in Tiruvannamalai
TIRUVANNAMALAI: Police on Saturday arrested five persons, including the boyfriend of a 17-year-old girl and a quack doctor, in connection with the illegal termination of her pregnancy near Tiruvannamalai. According to police sources, the accused, Kalyanasundaram (25), had been in a relationship with the minor for over two years. The girl, whose parents are employed abroad, was living with relatives when the relationship developed. Upon discovering she was pregnant, she allegedly urged Kalyanasundaram to marry her. However, he allegedly persuaded her to consult a doctor instead. Last month, he took her to Devapandalam village near Sankarapuram in Kallakurichi district, where a fake doctor, Sivanandham (40), carried out an illegal surgical abortion. When Kalyanasundaram later refused to marry her, the girl lodged a complaint with the All Women's Police Station in Tiruvannamalai. He was subsequently arrested under the Pocso Act. Based on his confession, Sivanandham was also detained and allegedly admitted to disposing of the aborted foetus by burning it beneath a river bridge. A forensic team visited the site, and further investigations led to the arrest of three others — Jyothi (24), Chandra (56), and Malathi (32) — for their role in facilitating the procedure. Meanwhile, the Kallakurichi District Health Department has launched an inquiry into the unauthorised clinic operated by the quack.
