Owner sentenced to house arrest after Ontario child mauled by 3 dogs
On July 27, 2023, police said a father and his daughter went to the home on Jackson Court to view puppies for sale when three dogs rushed out of the house and attacked the young girl, unprovoked.
Police said at the time that the girl was 'mauled and severely injured' by the dogs. She was taken to hospital with severe bites all over her body.

Newmarket Animal Services went to the home that evening after the attack and the three dogs were handed over. They were then euthanized.
The owner, 68-year-old Leslie Theodore Kovacs, was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and three counts under Ontario's Dog Owner Liability Act (DOLA).

Police said he was also found to be in violation of a muzzle order issued by Newmarket Animal Services.
In a news release on Wednesday, police said Kovacs pleaded guilty to all charges. He was sentenced to one year of house arrest; 15 months of probation; a lifetime ban on owning, keeping, harbouring or residing in a home with a dog; and a $5,000 penalty under DOLA.
'York Regional Police and Newmarket Animal Services emphasize the importance of responsible pet ownership and the serious consequences of failing to control aggressive animals,' the force said. 'The safety and well-being of the community remain a top priority.'

Violent incidents prompt Penticton council to look at improved safety measures
The boardwalk along Okanagan Lake is known for its lively summer atmosphere — from the sounds of bike bells to families walking along the waterfront. But when the sun goes down, a different crowd can emerge and some are connected to violent crime. A new report being presented to Penticton City Council Tuesday highlights a troubling trend: a high concentration of violent incidents in the Lakeshore and Riverside Drive area, with roughly half occurring between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. 'We thought, what can we do to deter crime in that area and really create a sense of safety in those public spaces?' said Penticton RCMP Supt. Beth McAndie. 'There's already been a number of initiatives we've rolled out in partnership with the RCMP,' said Julie Czeck, Penticton's general manager of Public Safety and Partnerships. 'Enhanced visibility is number one. You'll see bylaw officers and police regularly walking the beat.' But concerns remain. In July, Kieran and Kirsten Adams were biking along the boardwalk when a verbal exchange with a group turned violent, leaving Kieran with a broken leg. 'I don't know how I'm supposed to sit on the beach with my back to the sidewalk anymore,' he told Global News in July. 'It's still an active investigation,' said McAndie. ‘Shocked and scared': Kelowna boys assaulted at bus stop
Halil Yilmaz' black eye is a reminder of a terrifying incident at a Kelowna, B.C., bus stop last week. 'He punched me,' Yilmaz said. 'Every time I touch it, I feel a sharp pain.' Halil, who is only 11 years old, and his 12-year old friend Finley Vandenhoorn, had just finished a drop-in youth group activity session. They walked over to the nearby bus stop on Springfield Road near Gordon Drive where the pair say they were assaulted by a man, who appeared to be more than twice their age. 'Shocked. That's when they were able to call police and then their parents. 'He was crying on the phone,' said Reyhan Kutsal, Halil's mom. 'He said, 'Mom, somebody beat me up at the bus stop,' and then I was shocked.' Kutsal told Global News her son had just started riding the bus on his own this summer. 'I always want to drive him but he's at that age, I don't know, he always wants to take a bus with his friends but now he doesn't want to after what happened to him,' Kutsal said. 'I don't want him to take the bus anymore, I think. According to the boys, the suspect had distinct features, including blonde hair streaks at the front of his face, pierced ears and sleeve tattoos on his left arm, which included an eye in a spider web. The families of the boys are hoping police are able to track the suspect down. 'This person should be caught so he doesn't do it to any other kids,' Kutsal said.

Illegal event parking, drinking, littering frustrates Rossdale residents
Residents in Rossdale are frustrated after a sporting event at Re/Max Field on Sunday spilled into their neighbourhood with public intoxication, open alcohol consumption, littering and illegal parking.
