Tackle acne this winter with these expert-approved skincare hacks

Dry winter air can cause overproduction of oil in the skin, leading to breakouts.
Common skincare mistakes is over-cleansing and not moisturising enough.
Attend to winter acne by knowing your skin type.

For many, acne doesn't stick to any particular season.
Winter's cold and chilly air can have a major effect on skin. Whether you have oily, normal, dry or combination skin, breakouts can cause discomfort and can leave you feeling sensitive and insecure.
Eucerin dermatologist Dr Mamello Ntsele gives some insight into what causes acne breakouts in winter and how to control it.
How are we more prone to acne flare-ups in winter?
Acne can behave quite differently in winter because the skin is more prone to drying out. When the skin loses moisture, this can prompt the body to create more oil or sebum to compensate, which can cause clogged pores and, thus, breakouts.

But it's not just the dry winter air that causes breakouts, physical health plays a role too.
Dr Mamello says, 'Dietary shifts in winter, when people tend to eat more comfort foods, can also contribute to breakouts as high-glycaemic foods are linked to more severe acne.'
Common winter skincare mistakes
Summer skincare routines won't cut it during the harsher, colder months. According to Dr Mamello, common skincare mistakes include over-cleansing, which strips the skin of its natural oils, using gel or foaming cleansers during dry seasons and not moisturising enough.
In winter, it's especially important to switch to richer creams with barrier-protecting and hydrating ingredients like ceramides, glycerine and hyaluronic acid. Another frequent oversight is skipping sunscreen, driven by the false belief that UV protection isn't necessary in colder months.
Know your skin type
Oily skin can break out more during the winter months because of dryer air. Combination skin types may also struggle, especially in the T-zone area - which is the forehead, nose and chin.

Dr Mamello says, 'It's crucial to be aware of your skin requirements. So many factors like age, environment and routine play into the quality of your skin during wintertime. For example, teens generally have oilier skin and lightweight products are usually necessary even in winter.
'Men may also have acne flare-ups thanks to shaving and that may need to be taken into consideration. Hormonal acne can occur in young and perimenopausal women, and they may need hormonal therapy to get flare-ups under control.
'It's not about making your skin adapt, it's about adapting to your skin. Be conscious of your skin needs every day of the year.'
How to prioritise skincare and work with your skin
Maintaining a consistent beauty regimen is key to finding that winter glow. Dr Mamello points out the essential product application steps for effective skincare:
Step 1: Hydrating cleanser
Step 2: Hydrating serum
Step 3: Hydrating moisturiser
Step 4: Non-comedogenic moisturising sunscreen
Dr Mamello also recommends a gentle exfoliant.
'Exfoliation can be a great way to get rid of dead skin cells and prevent pores from getting clogged. However, it's important that this is done in a gentle and safe way.
'Exfoliation can be done once or twice a week depending on skin tolerance and should always be followed by the application of moisturisers,' she shares.

Does At-Home Laser Hair Removal Work? We Asked A Dermatologist

At-home laser hair removal devices have been popular for their convenience, safety, relative comfort and results. If you're curious about trying one out yourself, you may be wondering if the portable gadgets are actually effective. 'Yes, at-home laser hair removal can work for some people with long-term consistent use—but they're much less powerful than professional treatments,' says Dr. Chelsea Hoffman, board-certified dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery. At-home laser hair removal is convenient and relatively painless, but it can take time and ... More consistency to see results. ILLUSTRATION: FORBES / PHOTO: BRAUN At-home laser hair removal devices generally cost between $150 and $450. They feature different laser types with multiple intensity levels, and they're meant to target specific skin tones. (For more on at-home hair removal, check out our guide to the best laser hair removal devices and our in-depth review of the Nood Flasher 2.0.) 'Yes. When used as directed, FDA-cleared at-home laser devices are generally considered safe,' says Hoffman. 'Side effects are typically mild and may include temporary redness, swelling, or irritation.' However, it's important to follow skin tone guidelines, perform a small spot test first, and avoid use on tattoos, moles or broken skin. People with darker skin tones should use devices specifically designed for their skin type, as certain devices can increase the risk for burns or hyperpigmentation, according to Hoffman. The first at-home laser hair removal devices became FDA-approved in the late 2000s, and they have slowly become more readily available. They work by targeting pigment (melanin) in the hair using either diode laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to slow and reduce hair growth over time. 'Using a principle called selective photothermolysis—a scientific way of saying light is used to safely heat and destroy a specific target—these devices send light into the hair shaft, which then travels down to the root (or follicle),' says Hoffman. 'The light is converted into heat that damages the tiny blood vessels feeding the follicle. Without that blood supply, the follicle loses its ability to grow new hair.' These treatments work best when there's a contrast between skin and hair color—typically lighter skin with darker hair—and they don't work well on very light, blonde, or gray hairs. 'No hair removal should be thought of as truly permanent, but rather as hair reduction ,' says Hoffman. If used consistently, at-home devices can help decrease hair growth over time. Like with many beauty treatments, though, results vary and long-term, regular maintenance is typically needed. In-office treatments are much more likely to deliver more complete and longer-lasting results—and typically in far fewer sessions, according to Hoffman. The problem is that in-office treatments are usually significantly more expensive, costing up to $600 per session and requiring three to eight treatments. Can You Do At-Home Laser Hair Removal When Pregnant? It's generally recommended to avoid laser treatments—both at home and in-office—during pregnancy, just to be safe. 'While there's no strong evidence that laser hair removal is harmful during pregnancy, we don't have enough data to confirm that it's completely safe, either,' says Hoffman. 'Hormonal changes in pregnancy can also make hair growth more unpredictable, potentially reducing the effectiveness of treatment during that time.' Patients died cold and uncared for: Health Ombud exposes collapse of psychiatric care in Northern Cape

The Health Ombud report reveals that two psychiatric patients died and one was left permanently bedridden. The mental health hospital operated without electricity for year, leaving life-saving equipment useless. Leadership failures and staff shortages caused the systemic collapse of the patient care system. The Health Ombud found that two psychiatric patients died and one was left permanently bedridden due to neglect and poor care. Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital went without electricity for a year, leaving life-saving equipment unusable and patients exposed to extreme temperatures. These are some of the findings in a damning report by Health Ombud Professor Taole Mokoena, who investigated the treatment, complications and deaths of psychiatric patients at the Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital and the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital. The report cites leadership failures, staff shortages and collapsing infrastructure as the main reasons for the breakdown in patient care. Emergency machines stood useless as they had not been charged. Calls for help could not go out as the phone lines were down. Some patients died. Others were sent out in critical condition. One will never walk again. The investigation followed a complaint made by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi in October last year. The report details how systemic neglect, infrastructure collapse, poor staffing and lack of leadership directly led to suffering, medical complications and death. Four psychiatric patients were closely examined in the report – two died, one suffered permanent disability and another experienced complications due to poor monitoring. In his report Mokoena states: The general care provided was substandard, and patients were not attended to in a manner consistent with the nature and severity of their health condition. Taole Mokoena The situation was made worse by a yearlong power outage at Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital, caused by cable theft and vandalism. While neighboring hospitals had their power restored within days, this one was left without electricity due to delays in the provincial department's supply chain processes. 'Because of the lack of electricity, resuscitation equipment could not be used, heating and cooling systems failed, and patients had to endure extreme weather conditions without proper clothing or bedding. The report What happened Cyprian Mohoto was transferred to Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital on 13 July last year after he experienced serious complications. A chest X-ray revealed that he had pneumonia, but this was never treated. For three days, his deteriorating condition was ignored by both nurses and doctors. He died on 16 July in the emergency unit. Tshepo Mdimbaza was found unresponsive in his bed at Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital on 3 August. When staff attempted to resuscitate him, they discovered that the equipment was not prepared or functional. His vital signs had not been properly monitored. A post-mortem found he had died from 'exposure to the elements'. John Louw, a patient at Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital, suffered a brain injury known as a subdural haemorrhage. After emergency surgery, including a craniotomy and craniectomy, was performed on 7 July and 23 July respectively, complications have left him permanently bedridden. Petrus de Bruin collapsed in ward M2 at Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital on 30 July and was transferred to Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital's Emergency Centre. He was stabilised and admitted for hypoglycaemia. While emergency care was appropriate, nursing monitoring was inadequate. The report highlighted a deep leadership crisis and operational failure at both facilities. At Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital, there was no emergency preparedness, collapsing infrastructure, poor medicine control, a shortage of staff and a lack of proper record keeping, the report revealed. The Ombud found that: The clinical manager had written to the acting head of the provincial department of health, warning about the harmful conditions patients were facing, but no action was taken. At Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital, the problems included overcrowding, missing patient files, poor supervision of nurses and staffing shortages across all departments. 'Leadership instability in the Northern Cape provincial department of health negatively affected service delivery, patient safety and the overall quality of care,' said Mokoena. Recommendations The Ombud called for urgent action to fix the broken system. This includes: 'This level of systemic collapse must never be allowed to happen again in our health system,' Mokoena added.

14 Best Collagen Creams Work Overtime to Plump and Firm Skin

It may come as a surprise that the best collagen creams don't always contain their namesake ingredient—at least, not if their purpose is to actually boost collagen. Confused? Let a pro explain: 'Topical collagen creams with just collagen boost skin's hydration and temporarily plump the skin, making it appear supple and radiant, but they do not rebuild dermal collagen,' Dr. Morayo Adisa, MD, FAAD, a double board-certified dermatologist and dermapathologist at Dermatology Physicians Chicago - Kenilworth, explains. 'The molecules of topical collagen are usually too big to penetrate beyond the surface of the skin.' However, she says, the topical creams formulated with ingredients such as vitamin C, peptides, or growth factors can actually help stimulate collagen production. Vogue's Favorite Collagen Creams: So while the phrase collagen cream may be a bit of a misnomer, it is fair to say that the best of the bunch can help give the skin that smooth, bouncy look the structural protein is known for. And even for those not yet affected by visible signs of aging—AKA, those who were still in diapers when Elemis unveiled its pioneering Pro-Collagen Marine Cream in 2003—using collagen creams can help deliver that dewy glow that's desirable at any age. So, which collagen cream—and more over, which active ingredient—is right for you? Valerie Aparovich, a biochemist, certified cosmetologist-aesthetician, and the science team lead at OnSkin, breaks it down. 'For a quick hydration boost, opt for formulas with collagen,' she says. 'For anti-aging benefits, such as firming and wrinkle reduction, look for products containing peptides.' In both cases, she recommends choosing formulas rich in antioxidants, as they help preserve collagen by reducing free-radical damage that can hasten its degradation. With that cleared up, it's time to shop. Ahead, find an edit of the absolute best collagen creams on the market, ranging from buzzy K-beauty finds to high-tech formulations and the Elemis O.G. itself. 'Like any of the leading luxury cosmetics on the market, a sensorial experience is a must, and Pro-Collagen Marine Cream certainly delivers,' Murden says.
