Oil prices little changed
HOUSTON: Oil held steady on Thursday after strong earnings from Meta and Microsoft supported US equities and postponement of US-Iran talks offset concerns about the US economy and the prospect of higher OPEC+ oil output.
US West Texas Intermediate crude futures eased 15 cents or 0.3% to $58.04 a barrel by 12:30 p.m. ET (1630 GMT). Brent crude futures fell 18 cents or 0.2% to $60.90. Both contracts fell over 1% earlier. 'Crude remains in the crosshairs of lower prices near term as OPEC+ is signaling production, which will likely get approval at next week's OPEC meeting,' said Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial.
'The GDP number for the US showed a slight contraction and consumer confidence has also drifted lower, which has pushed most long hedge funds away from the buying side of crude on demand concerns,' Kissler added.
Wall Street stocks rallied and gold prices slid on Thursday as solid earnings from big tech bolstered investor risk appetite. Meanwhile, a fourth round of talks between the United States and Iran, which had been due to take place in Rome on Saturday, has been postponed and a new date will be set 'depending on the US approach,' a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Thursday. Concern about higher supply also weighed on prices.
Saudi Arabia is telling allies and industry experts that it is unwilling to prop up the oil market with supply cuts and can manage a prolonged period of low prices, sources told Reuters. Several OPEC+ members will suggest the group accelerates output hikes in June for a second consecutive month, three people familiar with OPEC+ talks have said. Eight OPEC+ countries will meet on May 5 to decide a June output plan. Meanwhile, the US economy contracted for the first time in three years in the first quarter, data showed on Wednesday, swamped by a flood of imports as businesses raced to avoid higher costs from tariffs and underscoring the disruptive impact of President Donald Trump's unpredictable trade policy.
Trump's tariffs have made it probable the global economy will slip into recession this year, a Reuters poll suggested.
US crude oil stockpiles fell unexpectedly by 2.7 million barrels last week on higher export and refinery demand, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday, compared with analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 429,000-barrel rise.

Kohli-backed WBL to roll out next year
The first edition of the World Bowling League (WBL), backed by celebrity cricketer Virat Kohli and baseball star Mookie Betts, will roll out with six franchises competing in iconic locations early next year, league chief Adi K. Mishra told Reuters. The WBL is looking to transform a pastime for millions around the world into a cutting edge, made-for-TV experience via a heady mix of celebrity franchise owners, exotic locations and technological innovation. "It's an incredible sport which just hasn't been structured correctly for the past 50-60 years and everyone just dismisses it as a recreational activity," Mishra, the founder and CEO of sports tech firm League Sports Co, said in a video call from the United States. "We are going to launch with six franchises in the first quarter of next year. It's going to be a team of four — two male and two female bowlers." Mishra did not go into detail about the format but said professional bowlers would compete in the core sport while celebrities would take part in auxiliary events, with teams collecting points throughout the season. With its origins in ancient Egypt, bowling's heyday in the United States was in the 1960s and 70s when every town and suburb had its own alley. Even today, some 200 million people put on flat-soled shoes and take to the lanes every year, including 75 million in the US, Mishra said. The WBL is by no means the first attempt to create a professional circuit in the Tenpin game, and American Don 'Mr Bowling' Carter was the first athlete in any sport to ink a $1 million sponsorship deal back in 1964. What separates the WBL from previous attempts, Mishra says, is its global reach — the league is in the advanced stage of finalising franchises in Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India — and the ambitious vision. "Our first fundamental premise was — how can we take this and make this an aspirational product?" Mishra added. "We want to take two lanes and put them in iconic locations around the world — Hudson Yards in New York, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, a variety of different locations in Dubai and India." Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Betts bought the first announced franchise in May and the WBL pulled off another marketing coup when Kohli came on board as a strategic investor last month. Mishra did not provide financial details of Bett's purchase but said negotiations on the sale of the remaining franchises were in the final stages. The league plans to simplify scoring, gather a host of celebrity and corporate backers, and use ball-tracking and other technology to create a product that works on television and digital platforms. Weaving complimentary programming featuring celebrity bowlers like Betts and Kohli around the core sport would make it an irresistible proposition for broadcasters, said Mishra. "We already have many broadcasters lined up and a lot of them think this sport, the way we've designed it, can fit into their ultra-premium segment. "A lot of them believe they can bring in other influencers and celebrities, who come in and bowl as well. So there's a lot of 'shoulder programming' that you can create with the sport, which is not possible with a lot of other sports." Mishra and Kohli know each other through their joint ownership of a team in the E1 electric powerboat world championship, and the cricketer's fondness for bowling came as a pleasant surprise as the WBL was being in the planning stage. "Over the years, I've met a lot of celebs who happen to be closet bowlers," Mishra said. "We were speaking about various things about the team and it turned out that he has been bowling and watching it since he was 11-12. "That was a big surprise for me and we wanted him to be part of this. Hopefully we'll get him to bowl when he has more time for it."

Gilani distanced himself from over 600pc pay raise
ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani has distanced himself from over 600 percent raise in his salary, saying he has 'nothing to do' with this development. 'I was not consulted by anyone in this regard. I have nothing to do with my salary raise,' Gilani told the media, when asked about unprecedented raise in his salary, on the sidelines of the Senate session on Friday. Asked whether he was going to 'reverse' this raise by returning the increased salary, Gilani replied, 'get it reversed, it would be a good thing to do.' Federal government as well as the custodians of the two Houses of the Parliament are under massive public criticism following the surfacing of a government notification from last month in which over 600 percent increase in the salaries of the chairman Senate, speaker National Assembly, deputy chairman Senate and deputy speaker NA was notified. Conspicuously, feeling the heat of public criticism, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif joined the public circles in slamming this raise, terming it 'financial vulgarity,' in a recent post on X. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also appeared 'defensive'— with reports suggesting that the PM 'took notice' of the matter, and ordered an inquiry into massive pay raise and other perks for NA speaker and deputy speaker as well as Senate chairman and deputy chairman. 'I respect the defence minister — but I have nothing to do with the pay raise,' Gilani told reporters on Friday. Meanwhile, the chairman Senate presided over the Senate session. The House unanimously passed the Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2025, moved by Law Minister Azam Tarar. The bill deals with the registration of religious seminaries. Last December, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had announced the plan to launch a protest movement to push the government to enact this legislation. Later, he postponed the planned protest reportedly after the government assured him to resolve the matter. The House also passed a unanimous resolution in condemnation of Israel's attack on Iran. Moved by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, the resolution expressed concern over what it described was inaction of Muslim world against genocide of Palestinians, 'which has now led Israel to attack another sovereign Muslim state Iran.' 'The world and Muslim Ummah are witnessing the slaughter of innocent children and civilians in Gaza for the last two years on an unimaginable scale,' said the resolution. The House, through its resolution, said it stands resolute with Iranian brethren and supports their right to defend themselves against Israeli aggression. Earlier, the House commenced discussion on the proposed federal budget in which senators from different political parties participated. The Senate was adjourned till Monday.
