Steven Pressley's Dundee see Premier Sports Cup hopes dashed by Alloa loss

Steven Pressley suffered a second defeat as Dundee manager as Alloa left their visitors' hopes of Premier Sports Cup progression in ruins.
Dundee were on the end of another 1-0 defeat at the Indodrill Stadium after losing their opening game against Airdrie.
The decisive moment came midway through the second half when Luke Graham could only turn Steven Buchanan's shot into his own net as he tried to clear in the goalmouth.
The result moved Alloa on to nine points at the top of Group C, three ahead of Airdrie with a game more played.
Mikael Mandron hit a hat-trick as St Mirren started and finished strongly in an 8-2 home win over Annan.
Mandron put Saints three up inside nine minutes following Killian Phillips' double but trialist Myles Gaffney pulled two goals back for the visitors before Richard King converted a penalty on the hour mark.
Stephen Robinson's side went goal crazy in the final 10 minutes with Mandron completing his treble and Jayden Richardson and Roland Idowu also on target.
Ayr are a point behind Saints with a game in hand in Group D after Curtis Main hit a double in a 4-0 home win over Arbroath.
Falkirk could not follow up their seven-goal thrashing of Brechin as they were held to a goalless draw by Cove in another trip to the North East. The Bairns gained a penalty shoot-out bonus point but Spartans moved top of Group A with a 2-0 win at Glebe Park.
Stephen O'Donnell hit the only goal as Motherwell moved top of Group G with victory over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview.
O'Donnell had earlier had a goal disallowed and Callum Slattery hit the bar from a free-kick before the defender converted from a back-post corner four minutes before the break.
Livingston bounced back from defeat by Kilmarnock with a 2-0 home win over Brora Rangers. Danny Wilson opened the scoring with an overhead kick just after the half-hour mark and Zak Rudden headed the second with six minutes left.
Ross County cut the gap on Group B leaders Partick Thistle to two points after Jay Henderson's second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Queen of the South at Palmerston.
East Kilbride moved top of Group F as they followed up their shock triumph over Raith Rovers with a 4-1 win at Elgin with the help of Jack Leitch's first-half double.
St Johnstone joined the SPFL newcomers on six points after Uche Ikpeazu's 90th-minute goal – his first for the club – earned a 1-0 win at Inverness.
Josh Cooper hit a double as Dunfermline got off the mark with a 4-0 win at Dumbarton.

Hearts address right-back issue as defender comes in while Kenneth Vargas returns

Adam Forrester is poised to step in to help Hearts' right-back issues following an injury to the Norwegian Christian Borchgrevink. The 20-year-old youth academy graduate has watched all three Premier Sports Cup ties from the stand but is expected to play in at least one of the Edinburgh club's next two matches. Hearts face Dumbarton on Wednesday in their final Group E match and will be confident of gaining victory against League Two opponents. A win should also be sufficient to secure a seeding place for the Premier Sports Cup last-16 draw. However, Borchgrevink is expected to miss the match at Tynecastle Park as he recovers from a hamstring complaint. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He was substituted at half-time on Saturday evening as Hearts beat Stirling Albion 4-0 at Forthbank, medical staff advising not to take a risk with the tight muscle. Irishman Oisin McEntee moved from midfield to right-back for the second half as the Australian Calem Nieuwenhof came off the bench to play in midfield. Forrester will now get his chance by featuring in one or both of Hearts' next two games after making 34 senior appearances last season. The Dumbarton tie is followed by Craig Gordon's testimonial match against Sunderland in Gorgie this Saturday. The Tynecastle head coach Derek McInnes explained the situation to the Edinburgh News, stressing that players like Forrester are being left out simply because he is trying to manage a first-team squad of more than 30 players at the moment. 'Borchgrevink felt his hamstring tight. It wasn't even up for debate so we just got him off quickly,' said McInnes. 'We'll see how he is this week. We'll have a wee look at him but, thankfully, we've got other options there. We can obviously go to a back three, plus we've got Adam Forrester. It's my intention to play Adam in one of the next two games, anyway. 'We just felt that Borchgrevink needed to play at the end of the day [against Stirling]. We just wanted him to feel part of it and build his minutes up. We didn't put Adam on the bench because we thought we'd put Stephen Kingsley there since he needs minutes. We kind of hoped to get Stephen on during the game. Even picking a bench is difficult at the minute. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We've got Adam there to come in for right-back. I think Michael Steinwender could play there. Oisin can fill in there as well. Part of the reason that you have a look at Oisin at full-back is for the eventuality of the day. Borchevink, I think will miss the game on Wednesday, based on what I'm hearing, but he might have a chance for a Craig's testimonial game on Saturday.' Costa Rican winger Kenneth Vargas was also in the stand at Forthbank after returning to Edinburgh from international duty at the Gold Cup. His fitness is being assessed by coaching staff as McInnes juggles his attacking options ahead of the new SPFL Premiership campaign. Steinwender and Musa Drammeh watched the game alongside Forrester, midfielder Aidan Denholm and the injured Beni Baningime. Denholm is expected to leave Hearts either on loan or in a permanent move before the transfer window closes. Livingston are pushing hard to take him to West Lothian, while Motherwell and Ross County have also shown an interest.

Former Hearts and Middlesbrough star could make summer transfer after nightmare injury spell

A former Hearts and Middlesbrough striker could make a summer transfer move - despite a memorable moment at the weekend. There are plenty of movers and shakers in the transfer market with former Jambos amongst them. One of them could be Uche Ikpeazu, who fired home a late winner for St Johnstone in their latest Premier Sports Cup group stage match, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 away win at Inverness CT. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Saints were relegated from the Premiership last season but Ikpeazu missed almost all of the campaign with injury, having been initially signed by Craig Levein, who he worked with at Hearts. The powerful forward spent between 2018-2020 at Tynecastle before moving to Wycombe Wanderers then Middlesbrough, before a stint in Turkey with Konyaspor, and Port Vale brought him to back to UK football two years ago. Uche Ikpeazu St Johnstone future latest Boss Simo Valakari told The Courier: 'I'm happy for big Uche. It has not been easy – he had not scored for a long time so I'm happy for him to get the winner. We still need to see his contract situation and how it is with him. He's still working with his fitness and we'll see how the situation is. I've not been playing him as much as he would have liked because we don't know if he will be with us or not. 'That's the situation. He knows as well. It's up to him. I want him here but it's up to him what he wants to do. Very early in the game, Inverness went to our goal and Toby Steward made a fantastic save that kept us in the game. That changed very much how the game could have gone. If we had gone 1-0 down after a couple of minutes, it would have been much more difficult. 'Some moments, we kind of lose our heads a little bit with new players – it's a new team. In difficult moments we are not that strong together yet but, as I said, I see in moments it is there. 'With the ball we will be much better and that's normal. 'You can't buy this work rate, you can't buy this attitude. We left the ego out. We knew that we needed to come here and do the ugly things right.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad What was Uche Ikpeazu's injury? The striker had a knee injury with several complications that meant his St Johnstone debut did not come until April this year. Ikpeazu said at the time of the nightmare scenario: 'Some days you come in and think: 'Where do I go from here?' The club sorted me out to see Dr Iain Murray in Edinburgh and he analysed the knee, had another surgery and found what was going on. An infection was hiding in there and he sorted it out quite quickly. 'That's five operations. If not for Dr Murray and how meticulous he was, I don't know when I would be back. A big thank you to him. He kind of saved me. I didn't think I'd play this season and, to be honest, I didn't know when I'd play. And it was great the club brought in Caitlin (physio Caitlin Wright, who moved from Hamilton mid-season). 'She's very thorough and takes her job seriously, which is important for a physio. You can't say that about everyone. Early mornings, late afternoons. There have been a lot of hard hours. I've missed so much football.'

Hearts 'had words' as Derek McInnes not happy despite 12 goals in three Premier Sports Cup games

Edinburgh club must hit high standards for the 2025/26 SPFL Premiership Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Anyone thinking Derek McInnes is jovial as Hearts coast towards the Premier Sports Cup knockout phase doesn't know the new Tynecastle manager. His team have scored 12 goals in three wins against lower-league opponents, conceding just one in the process. There are plenty positives but McInnes is still demanding higher standards from his players. Words were exchanged in the away dressing room at Forthbank on Saturday night, despite Hearts cruising to a 4-0 victory over League Two Stirling Albion. Defender Craig Halkett, forward Claudio Braga and debutant winger Alexandros Kyziridis scored to put the visitors 3-0 ahead before half-time. Halkett added a fourth in the second half, but McInnes wasn't entirely happy at full-time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The manager has been on at us. We won 4-0 and going into the changing room you'd think it would be buzzing, but it wasn't,' admitted Halkett. 'We had words because we know it wasn't good enough in certain points of the game and it can get better. We were slack, forcing passes and not doing things quick enough - and even though he told us that, we knew it ourselves. 'That's good, it's refreshing because you don't want someone who is going to tell you that you're brilliant all the time. Everyone knows the standards have to be high in this team. You have to take it on board and try to get better. It's not unusual, even if he hadn't said anything and just left it to the boys, we would have said that among ourselves. It's a collective from everyone demanding more from each other. 'The manager is big on standards. Go back to before he even came in for pre-season when he spoke to people on the phone, he made it clear the standards were not there last season. It wasn't good enough so everyone knew before we came back we all had to lift it. That was the reason Hearts were in that position, so right from the first day it's all been about standards and getting this club back to where it should be.' Mindful of Hearts' seventh-place finish last season before he was lured to Edinburgh from Kilmarnock, McInnes wants to build real momentum ahead of this year's Premiership kick-off against Aberdeen in two weeks' time. His demand for more does not mean victories over Dunfermline Athletic, Hamilton Academical and Stirling have not been positive. Indeed, victory over Dumbarton on Wednesday should secure Hearts a seeding place for the Premier Sports Cup knockout rounds. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It was good, we have started the season really well,' acknowledged Halkett. 'That's three wins, 12 goals scored and only one conceded. We were disappointed to lose that one to Dunfermline but it's been a good start, although I think we can still get better. It was a bit slack at times against Stirling but we're getting the wins, which is important. Hearts goals ahead of the Scottish Premiership kick-off against Aberdeen 'I feel we have made progress from game to game and that's something the manager has been talking about. He's stressed how nobody can be perfect this early in the season, but also stressing these games are not pre-season friendlies for us. We want to win them and thankfully we're doing that. Everyone knows we can get better, I think we are getting better, but there's more to come. 'A lot of people are getting a lot of minutes in these games and the manager has told everyone when they get their chance that you have to do everything you can to show it's your position. You can see when we play that everyone is giving their all and maybe people are trying too hard at times. We have a big squad and everyone has to fight for the jerseys.' Halkett's header appeared to cross the goal line for Hearts' fourth goal, although his defensive colleague Stuart Findlay arrived to make sure. 'They told me after the game that the linesman thought it was over the line so it was my goal,' smiled Halkett. 'Two in a game, which is great, but as a defender the clean sheet means just as much. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The last time I scored twice in one match would have also been in the League Cup against Stenhousemuir in my first year at Hearts - when I went up front for the last 10 minutes. I was a striker back in my early days at Rangers before I got moved back. It's good that those instincts are still there.' READ MORE: Two Hearts injuries emerge
