India, Italy agree to enhance agriculture and energy cooperation, investments
Following Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's two-day visit to Italy, the two countries have resolved to work together on enhancing cooperation in a number of sectors, including various agricultural and energy sectors, the government said on Friday (June 6, 2025). Mr. Goyal completed a two-day visit to Italy on June 5, following a three-day visit to France. During his time in Italy, he co-chaired the 22nd session of the India-Italy Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) along with Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani. 'Several concrete outcomes emerged from the JCEC,' the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a release. 'India and Italy resolved to strengthen cooperation in agriculture and food processing, and to set up Joint Working Groups in the automobile and space sectors.' The two leaders and their teams also identified several opportunities for collaboration in sustainable agri-value chains, agri-machinery, food packaging technologies, and renewable energy. 'They also agreed to work together in areas such as green hydrogen and biofuels and expressed intent to facilitate movement of skilled professionals between the two countries,' the release added. According to the government, a delegation of leaders from about 90 companies accompanied Mr. Goyal on his trip, during which they visited Italian industries and held several meetings with local companies. 'Shri Goyal also held one-on-one interactions with Italian corporate leaders and welcomed their plans to expand operations, manufacturing, or office presence in India,' the release said. Data from the Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) shows that Italy accounts for 0.49% of all the foreign direct investment into India since 2000, at $3.6 billion.

India, Italy get into a huddle over critical mineral squeeze
India and Italy Thursday cautioned against some countries' dominance on critical minerals and how the over-dependence on these key components of semiconductor, aerospace industry and EV batteries can be reduced. Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the concentration of critical minerals and their supply chains in a few geographies can hurt economic development of countries while Italian Deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister Antonio Tajani said the private sector of the two countries can consider forming joint ventures in this segment. The concerns assume significance as China possesses around 90% of rare earth magnet supplies. "On Wednesday, I met Italian companies which are already working on processing of critical minerals. I think it is important that the world recognises the danger of critical minerals, and supply and processing being concentrated in particular geographies which at any point of time can hurt economic development," Goyal said after the India-Italy Strategic Economic Partnership Forum here. This will help reduce "our over-dependence and over-reliance on certain critical minerals," the minister said. "Why should only China be present in Africa and South America? We believe India too can play a role. India is a protagonist in the Indo-Pacific area. There is Africa, Mediterranean Sea, Suez Canal - several points can fuel joint ventures between India and Italy," Tajani said.

India and Italy have agreed to increase cooperation in areas such as manufacturing, auto, aerospace, energy transition, migration and mobility, an official statement said on Friday. These issues were discussed during the meetings between Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani. Brescia is Italy's manufacturing hub. "India and Italy agreed to prioritise cooperation in several emerging and strategic sectors. These include Industry 4.0, aerospace, energy transition, and sustainable mobility," the commerce ministry said. The two sides also stressed the importance of joint efforts in skill development, digital transformation, migration and mobility, as well as global connectivity initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
