It was an ordinary Monday morning. Kara Hanning had just begun her work week at her banking job when her phone lit up.
It was a text from a former co-worker. The woman had been watching the news: there had been some sort of incident on the Louisiana road where Hanning's ex, James Lee Sadler, lived with his family. The area was swarmed by police cars and ambulances.

Disgraced NFL star Henry Ruggs III publicly apologizes to DUI crash victim's family during prison release

Disgraced former NFL star Henry Ruggs III has publicly apologized to the family of the woman he killed in a 2021 drunk-driving accident. On Tuesday, three and a half years since the crash that took the lives of 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her dog Max, the ex-Raiders receiver was granted special release to speak at a Hope for Prisoners event in Las Vegas. 'One, I wish I could turn back the hands of time,' the 26-year-old began, as seen in video from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. 'I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something,' he continued. 'I sincerely apologize for not only being a part of that situation, but the fact my face is always in the news, it's always in the newspaper. So they have to constantly be reminded of the situation, be reminded of me.' This isn't the first time Ruggs has offered a publicly apology since pleading guilty to DUI and being sentenced to anywhere from three-to-10 years in prison. Prior to his incarceration, Ruggs addressed Tintor's family in a Nevada courtroom. 'To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering my actions the morning of November 2, 2021 have caused you, your family and those who knew Ms. Tina and Max,' he said, according to multiple reports. 'I let my family, my teammates and those who believed in me down with my actions and hurt so many.' Ruggs was cut by the Raiders following the pre-dawn crash as he recovered in a Las Vegas-area hospital. He and his fiancee were also injured in the collision. In a statement read in court by Tintor´s cousin, David Strbac, Tintor´s mother, Mirjana Komazec, offered prayer for Ruggs and his young daughter. 'We pray that Henry Ruggs is blessed with the opportunity to be able watch his beautiful daughter grow into the amazing woman she can be,' Komazec's statement read. 'And we pray that this terrible accident inspires positive change in the world. We pray that we all take away the importance of looking out for one another, remembering everyone we meet is another human's loved one.' Ruggs, a former Alabama star and the 12th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, has remained busy in prison, where he's continued to train in hopes of an NFL return, according to former teammate, Josh Jacobs. 'Keeping up with him and hearing him talk, it brings me spirits, because he's always positive,' Jacobs, who now plays for the Green Bay Packers, told the Pivot Podcast in April. 'He's positive about everything. He's training. They let him train and things like that, so I'm like, 'When you come out, man, I don't know if you will get a chance.' 'I've been talking to some people for him,' Jacobs continued. 'They've been saying a couple of teams are willing to give him a chance. I'm like, 'When you get that chance, man, you better not ever — don't look back, and prove to yourself and prove to everybody that one decision don't define you and who you are as a man.'

Beauty therapist, 35, dodges jail after attacking FIVE police officers, treating them like 'punch bags' and spitting at them, court hears

A beauty therapist has avoided jail after she assaulted five officers, spat at them and even hit one with a 'donkey kick'. Lucy Theunissen, 35, treated police officers like 'punch bags' in a shocking sustained attack after she caused a blazing row at a Chinese takeaway in Basingstoke, Hants last year. The mother-of-three walked free from Winchester Crown Court after Judge Rufus Taylor who stopped short of imposing a custodial sentence because of her disabilities. The sentencing provoked outrage from Hampshire Police Federation, which represents the rank-and-file and criticised the decision not to jail Theunissen. The court heard Theunissen, a qualified masseuse and beautician, first attacked constables at a Chinese takeaway when 999 was called on her because she was drunkenly abusing customers. Then, in front of her six-year-old child and his friend, she swore and shouted before launching assault on officers by kicking out and trying to bite them while resisting arrest. When back-up arrived at Woo's Chinese Takeaway, the mother-of-three kicked another officer's shin. The assault continued in the back of a police van as she spat at the driver, only for it to land on the protective glass. At the police station, Theunissen 'donkey kicked' a police officer in the torso, the court heard. She then she smacked one officer in the head when they tried to remove her mobile phone in a custody cell. After initially denying the charges, the beautician eventually pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker and criminal damage. The defendant, who sobbed in court as the charges were read out, was sentenced to a two-year community order, with 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days for the incident which happened on the evening of April 11, 2024. She must also pay £100 compensation to each of the five officers involved as well as a victim surcharge and a 60-day curfew. Theunissen has three sons, aged 15, 14 and seven, who were not present in court. An impact statement read out on behalf of PC James Pawley said: 'I come to work to serve the community and I wish to do it without fearing assault. 'For too long police have been treated as punching bags for people to take their anger out on. 'The mental anger of this sort of incident will undoubtedly stay with me and I do not enjoy telling my loved ones that I have been assaulted at work. 'I am angry that she felt the necessity to assault me. What she did was not ok and will never be ok.' Justin Johnson, defending, said: 'Miss Theunissen has expressed remorse for what happened. She has apologised to one of the officers and said she is willing to apologise to the others for what happened. 'It was an overreaction from a previous negative experience with the police. 'She had recently suffered the bereavement of her grandmother, one of the few relatives she was in contact with after she left home aged 16. 'I accept that this passes the custodial threshold but I believe it could be suspended due to her low risk to the public.' Judge Rufus Taylor concluded: 'You lashed out, donkey kicked and spat at these officers. It is a pretty bad episode. 'There is a high level of culpability here as it is an instance of multiple prolonged assaults. 'The whole situation is aggravated by the fact it was in front of your son and his friend. 'This case really warrants a custodial sentence but I will step back from that because of your problems.' Upon hearing of the result Spencer Wragg, Chair of the Hampshire Police Federation, said: 'No police officer should come to work expecting to be assaulted. 'No family should expect their loved one to come home with injuries sustained at work as part of the job. 'Being spat at is vile, being struck and kicked whilst answering a call from the public simply isn't acceptable. 'It's not always just the physical injury that affects officers and the psychological impact of incidents can take a lot longer to recover from. 'I am concerned about the message that this sentence gives to officers who are out policing the streets of Hampshire and Isle of Wight today.'

Elon Musk calls Grok answer a ‘major fail' after it highlights political violence caused by MAGA supporters

Elon Musk blasted his own artificial intelligence platform, Grok, over a 'major fail' after it highlighted the frequency of right-wing political violence versus left-wing violence. Grok, an AI tool that X users frequently ask to fact-check claims from prominent figures such as Musk, has been accused by conservatives in the past of favoring liberals in its responses. '@grok since 2016, has the left or right been more violent?' the user GrokChecker asked Wednesday morning, in response to a tweet that claimed support for the Democratic party was faltering. Grok then stated the facts regarding the number of politically motivated attacks from both sides over the last decade. 'Since 2016, data suggests right-wing political violence has been more frequent and deadly, with incidents like the January 6 Capitol riot and mass shootings (e.g., El Paso 2019) causing significant fatalities,' it stated. 'Major fail, as this is objectively false. Grok is parroting legacy media,' Musk wrote underneath Grok's response late Tuesday on X, 'Working on it,' he added. On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed Capitol Hill, clashing with police and injuring hundreds after the president ordered his followers to "fight like hell', adding, 'if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore." Trump lawyers denied that the statement was an outright call to incite physical violence. The day resulted in five deaths. The president has since pardoned all 1,500 people convicted of offenses related to the attack. Some have re-offended since the sweep pardoning. By comparison, there have been a significantly smaller number of violent left-wing attacks – a notion which Grok supported, 'Left-wing violence, while rising, especially during 2020 protests, is less lethal, often targeting property.' Musk is a frequent critic of the left and traditional news outlets, which he refers to as the 'legacy media.' In Minnesota, last week, 57-year-old Vance Boelter was accused of unleashing a 'politically-motivated' assassination where he shot four, including a Democratic lawmaker, her spouse, along with a Democratic state senator and his spouse. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, died from the attack, whereas Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, survived. Boelter is being held on $5 million bail and is scheduled to return to court on June 27. He could face the death penalty. After responding to the question about the left and right, Grok then gave an overview of the state of political affairs in America. 'Surveys show both sides increasingly justify violence, reflecting deep polarization. Right-wing attacks account for the most deadly incidents, per reports like Reuters and GAO. However, biases in reporting may skew perceptions. Both sides contribute to a growing cycle of unrest, and precise attribution remains contentious due to varying definitions of violence.' Musk is a proponent of the divisive political landscape, as someone who frequently spouts far-right commentary on X and has recently served in the administration. He has previously expressed his despair at 'the downfall of Western civilization' regarding immigration in Europe. He has peddled several narratives from far-right accounts, including that of British activist Tommy Robinson.
