
Sweet bite of life
The 2008 Oscar-nominated film Waltz with Bashir was a fine early example, a dark and compelling depiction of the 1982 war in Lebanon from the vantage point of director Ari Folman, whose fractured memories of the event suggest a PTSD-induced defence mechanism.
Folman's animation was dramatic, dark and surreal, but it also served to put a indelible pictures to events that were largely erased from history.

The film bounces between Shamattawa in northern Manitoba and Toronto in the 1980s and '90s.
A 'toon documentary in the mould of Endless Cookie, however, is something that feels new. Directed by half-brothers Seth and Peter Scriver, it's a freewheeling trip that bounces between the First Nations community of Shamattawa in northern Manitoba and Toronto in the 1980s and '90s, specifically zeroing in on the funky downtown neighbourhood of Kensington Market.
Seth Scriver, who made the animated 2013 road movie Asphalt Watches, was inspired to make the film by his older brother Peter, whom Seth describes as one of the best storytellers in the world.
The best storytellers don't always stay strictly true. So it is here, where we see Seth securing funding money from the NFG (it stands not for 'No f—-ing good,' Seth says). The NFB — National Film Board — did not finance the film.
The cartoon Seth flies to Shamattawa and attempts to lay down the requisite clean audio track of Peter's various reminiscences. But because Peter shares a house with nine kids and a couple of dozen dogs, clean audio is a dream akin to world peace … or a Maple Leafs Stanley Cup win in our time.
They abandon clean audio and a planned two-year timeline and go with the flow. The constant interruptions by the kids become part of the film's loosey-goosey texture. Indeed, the interruptions occasionally play front and centre, allowing Peter's offspring to shine on their own.

The process of making the film, almost entirely animated by Seth, ultimately takes nine years.

The key to understanding the film rests in the Kensington Market, where the brothers' dad operated a funky second-hand shop. This would seem to be the source of the film's hippy esthetic, not just pertaining to animation (reminiscent of underground comic artist Kim Deitch), but to the whole narrative thread, which proceeds in the desultory manner of a stoner on a constantly interrupted mission.
And yet, a discipline is at work here. The Scrivers touch on serious themes, especially pertaining to injustices done to Indigenous people, but the tone stays philosophical, funny and affectionate.
The two main locales, Shamattawa and Kensington Market, could not be more different. One is remote, one is urban, but they reflect off each other in interesting ways. Each has a cavalcade of colourful characters and each yields a stream of oft-hilarious stories.
If a harmony exists between those two places, the film suggests, there is hope for the entire country.

Album review: Grammy-winning Montrealer Kaytranada drops surprise album geared for the dance floor
Entertainment And Life By Montreal Gazette Kaytranada knows how to throw a party. In his opening slot for The Weeknd's two packed concerts at Parc Jean-Drapeau in July, the Montrealer got people moving with an up-tempo set featuring many of his own hits. Far from the reserved DJ-producer, he danced up a storm behind the consoles, occasionally grabbing the mic to hype the crowd. In October, he embarks on a co-headlining arena tour with French electro duo Justice, which sadly won't be stopping in our city. But first he's back with a late-summer surprise: Ain't No Damn Way!, a new album of instrumental jams geared for the dance floor, released a week and change before his 33rd birthday. 'Letting y'all know that this album is strictly for workouts, dancing and studying and for my people that love beats,' he said in an Instagram story this week. It's the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated 2024 album Timeless and double-Grammy-winning 2019 release Bubba. His debut 99% won the 2016 Polaris Music Prize for best Canadian album. Along the way, Kaytranada, born Louis Kevin Celestin in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and raised on Montreal's South Shore, has opened for Madonna, remixed Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey and collaborated with Kali Uchis, Pharrell Williams, Anderson .Paak, Snoop Dogg, Childish Gambino, H.E.R., and Pink Pantheress, among others. There are no guests on Ain't No Damn Way!, just Kaytranada doing his thing: pulling together disparate influences to craft singular grooves that stimulate the senses and move bodies in mysterious ways. That's not to say he doesn't have company. The quintessential crate-digger, he borrows textures from an impressive array of sources that showcase both his musical curiosity and intuitive ability to weave bits and pieces into a unified and never overworked whole. First single Space Invader pops with an old-school hip-hop beat and samples Kelis's Neptunes-produced 2001 track Young, Fresh N' New, turning the rejuvenated result into a soulful, scintillating club jam that feels like a lost Michael Jackson recording crossed with a '90s house track. Championship, next, borrows from 1970s German electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream to mystical effect. Home grabs a head-bobbing beat from drummer Alex Sowinski of Toronto's Badbadnotgood, while the entrancing Things incorporates echoes of a hook from '80s Nigerian Afro-boogie artist Steve Monite over bongos and synth loops. The twinkling Good Luck is based on a staggered breakbeat by drummer Karriem Riggins, who has worked with Chicago rapper Common and the late, great producer and Kaytranada inspiration J Dilla (who is sampled on the salvational Don't Worry Babe / I Got You Babe). The dreamy interlude lasts a mere 1:47, making it the shortest of 12 songs on an album that clocks in just under the 35-minute mark. Shine Your Light For We matches Barry White instrumental snippets — not that you would know, without reading the credits — with soulful vocals from Wu-Tang Clan rapper Cappadonna's inspirational 1998 jam Black Boy. And closing track Do It! (Again!) (feat. TLC), grabs from the R&B trio's 1994 song Let's Do It Again while giving it the Kaytranada makeover — i.e. turning it into another bumping, gently percolating club jam, the title inviting us to do as we're told and put this addictive album on repeat. A decade into his recording career proper, Kaytranada shows no signs of relenting, and no lack of inspiration. The guy has so many ideas, he has to keep putting out new music. While he has been flirting with mainstream status for a while — his Spotify page shows several tracks with over 100 million streams — it's only a matter of time before he breaks through for real. Until then, it's a treat to watch Kaytranada continue to build his rock-solid reputation as one of the most tasteful and inventive producers around, with an infectious and instantly identifiable sound.

Nuanced 1965 drama delicate romance in complicated time
This groundbreaking queer film, now available in a 4K restoration that revives its original black-and-white esthetic, never uses the words 'gay' or 'homosexual.' It's a marvel of subtext, a coming-of-age story in which the relationship between the two main male characters is kept quietly coded. This discretion is understandable: Winter Kept Us Warm, written and directed by Brandon-born, Winnipeg-raised David Secter, was first released in 1965, when homosexuality was still a criminal offence in Canada. In 2025, the film functions as a fascinating historical document, a significant marker in the long journey from the celluloid closet to contemporary queer representation. Winter was also the first English-language Canadian work to screen at Cannes, and became an important (but often overlooked) influence on a generation of independent Canadian filmmakers, not just because of its radical subject, but because it managed to get made at all. Modest but often ingeniously artful, Winter was filmed on a shoestring budget by a mostly student cast and crew who were basically learning on the job. Beyond its considerable historic value, though, the film holds up because the story's enforced subtlety shapes a delicate and deeply affecting character study. Our two protagonists, both students at the University of Toronto, are presented in the opening sequences as a study in contrasts. Doug (John Labow, who later became a documentary producer) roars toward campus in a cool convertible, wearing sunglasses and accompanied by a jazzy score. He walks into the college residence like he owns the place. Peter (Henry Tarvainen, who also went on to work as a producer) arrives by cab, awkwardly lugging a big cardboard box, rubbernecking at the big city and all its tall buildings. He's unsure of where to go or what to do. Doug is an extroverted senior, charming and popular, always surrounded by a gang of admiring male friends and often accompanied by his beautiful girlfriend, Bev (billed here as Joy Tepperman, she became the prolific Canadian novelist Joy Fielding). Peter is an introverted, bookish junior, a scholarship boy from an immigrant Finnish family and a small Ontario town. He spends a lot of time alone in the library, and that's where he and Doug get into a conversation about T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, the poem that lends the film its title. Over the course of the school year, the two men's seemingly unlikely friendship grows in intensity, but the dynamics shift, ever so finely, when it seems they might want different things. Secter's approach to the story's queer undercurrents is necessarily oblique. It comes out in a certain way of framing collegiate roughhousing and locker-room towel-flicking, in a shower scene that fades to black, in a sentence left unfinished. 'If I didn't know better, I'd swear you and Pete are…,' Joy says to Doug at one point. That's about as explicit as things get. There are a few clunky moments from inexperienced cast members in minor roles, but the lead performances are remarkably assured. As we follow Doug and Peter's relationship, our initial impressions shift. Doug's brash assurance could be a screen for a deeper insecurity, while Peter ends up being tougher and more confident than he initially appears. The nuanced approach to character extends to the young women. Joy, who senses Doug's declining interest without being able to pinpoint its cause, is given sympathetic treatment, as is Sandra (Janet Amos), a theatre student Peter meets during a production of Ibsen's Ghosts. Secter, who now lives and works in Hawaii, is clearly dealing with an almost non-existent budget and severe practical constraints. (Remember, this was long before struggling cineastes could shoot films on their iPhones.) He has a clear gift for working with actors, and his thoughtful framing and careful camera placement keep things visually interesting, so that even seemingly simple scenes are layered with meaning and intent. The film catches a key juncture in the mid-1960s, poised between tradition (the young men attend dining hall dressed in academic gowns and often socialize in suits and ties) and coming social changes (they also go to coffeehouses and talk about the Vietnam War). The film's open-ended conclusion suggests that Doug and Pete are, like their era, at personal turning points. We are left to imagine each man's future, and even how each might look back at this brief, poignant moment in their lives, with T.S. Eliot once again coming in, speaking of 'memory and desire.'
