'This was our first game at Rate Field. We were sitting about 7 rows behind home plate, heard bits and pieces of the heckling (had gotten progressively worse over time), saw Ketel Marte become visibly upset, teammates standing up for him, and saw Torey Louvello (sp) call for the fan's ejection,' she wrote.
Article content
'Great job by White Sox security for understanding the gravity of the situation. While it hurt to watch Marte shaken up, it was a good lesson in sportsmanship for others (what we don't do and what we should not tolerate), and appreciation and maturity of these young players who grieve and have feelings like anyone else.'

This is the fan who yesterday in Chicago yelled a remark at the Dbacks' Ketel Marte about his mother, who sadly passed away in a car accident eight years ago.
He got what he deserved for being a fucking hateful POS.
Now you're banned for life from every @MLB ballpark. pic.twitter.com/vhiU2zwF4Z

NHL, NHLPA close to agreeing on a new collective bargaining agreement: Sources
The NHL and NHL Players' Association are on the verge of extending the collective bargaining agreement more than a year before it expires and expanding the regular season to 84 games. Article content The league and union have been in talks since April and are closing in on a memorandum of understanding addressing a number of high-profile topics long before the current agreement runs out in September 2026. The extension that could be announced as soon as Friday at the draft in Los Angeles would provide extended labor peace in a sport that has had multiple work stoppages, including the 2004-05 lockout that wiped out an entire season. Article content Article content Article content The league and union closing in on a deal was confirmed Thursday by three people familiar with the negotiations who spoke with The Associated Press on condition on anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized. It was first reported by Daily Faceoff. Article content Two of the people said the new CBA will increase the regular season to 84 games from 82, shorten the maximum length of contracts and add a playoff salary cap for the first time. Extending the regular season from a total of 1,312 games to 1,344 would also come with curtailing exhibition play. Article content Since 2013, players have been able to re-sign with their own team for up to eight years and sign with another for up to seven years. Under the new CBA terms, each would be reduced by a year, to seven for re-signing and six for changing teams. Article content A salary cap in the postseason would prevent teams from using long-term injured reserve rules to load up their rosters. Currently, teams with players on LTIR can exceed the cap by roughly the amount of the players' salaries until the playoffs begin. The option has been used, for example, by Chicago (Patrick Kane in 2015), Tampa Bay (Nikita Kucherov in 2021) and the Vegas Golden Knights (Mark Stone in multiple seasons) during their playoff runs. Article content NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh foreshadowed a quick conclusion to labor talks speaking at the Stanley Cup Final earlier in June. Bettman said the sides were 'in really good shape, having really good discussions,' and Walsh added that talks were 'moving forward, and I feel good with where we are.' Article content A full, new CBA would be the first since 2013. The league and the union have been working on the memorandum negotiated in 2020 to finish that season during the pandemic and would meld that agreement with the framework from 12 years ago. Tempers flare as Vlad Guerrero Jr. exits Blue Jays win over Guardians after getting drilled
A three-game midweek series in Cleveland was supposed to be all about the return to the mound of Blue Jays would-be ace starter Max Scherzer and the feel-good element of getting a star player back in the lineup. Article content Instead, there was at least some concern about the status of their highest-paid player as all-star first baseman Vlad Guerrero Jr. was drilled in the right forearm by a pitch from Guardians starter Tanner Bibee in the third inning of a matinee in Cleveland. Article content Article content Article content And, as a bonus, a pitcher who had been struggling came up big with his best outing this month. Article content First, to Guerrero. After staying in briefly after getting hit, the Jays $500-million man was removed from the game after camera shots showed him wincing while attempting to hold a bat. Article content The Jays later announced that X-Rays on Guerrero's arm were negative for any fracture and diagnosed with a right-arm contusion as initially, anyway, the team appeared to dodge a serious injury to their superstar on their way to a decisive 6-0 win in the rubber-match of the series. Article content Article content Front and centre in the contest was Jays starter Kevin Gausman, who most importantly finished off what had been a terrible June with a terrific outing in which he blanked the Guardians over eight innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Article content The veteran right-hander endeared himself to his own dugout in another way when he plunked the first batter he faced in the fourth inning, nailing Guardians slugger Jose Ramirez with a fastball to the forearm — an emphatic volley of retaliation. Article content If there was hope that the tit-for-tat retribution would end matters, they didn't. After learning that Ramirez would be leaving the game after the hit, Guardians manager Steven Vogt was incensed as the inning ended and stormed toward the Jays dugout where he was yelling at Toronto manager John Schneider. The diagnosis for Ramirez after an X-Ray was the same as Guerrero's. Article content Article content Article content The Jays clearly had seen enough, given that Guerrero was plunked with a pitch for the second time in as many games against the Guardians. Article content Article content Though the initial diagnosis obviously is encouraging, Toronto can ill afford to lose their most dynamic hitter for any period of time. Guerrero had been heeting up at the plate of late, including belting his 11th homer of the season in a loss on Wednesday. Article content With Gausman dealing, the Jays were able to navigate a lineup light on regulars. Outfielder George Springer and catcher Alejandro Kirk were given scheduled off days while regular shortstop Bo Bichette was the DH. Add the loss of Guerrero and prevailing over the Guardians was even more impressive. Article content With the win, the Jays improved to 43-37 and have now won 17-of-26 as they were to take a charter flight to Boston for a three-game weekend series against their division rival.
