Kalen DeBoer gives update on Alabama quarterback outlook during 'The Paul Finebaum Show'
Throughout the college football offseason, one of the biggest talking points surrounding the Alabama Crimson Tide has been the program's quarterback competition.
Tasked with replacing a two-year starter in Jalen Milroe, Alabama has three different players competing for the spot as the Crimson Tide's starter this offseason, but it is a unique position battle as all three have minimal experience at the collegiate level.
Of the trio, redshirt junior Ty Simpson is easily the most experienced of the three, but has completed only 29-of-50 pass attempts with three rushing touchdowns as a backup from 2022-24. Austin Mack, who also returns, is the lone player with a touchdown pass to his name in college, but has only three career passing attempts, while touted five-star freshman Keelon Russell has yet to appear in a collegiate game.
Because of this, it's clear as to why Alabama's quarterback competition has garnered so much attention during this offseason. However, did a leader begin to emerge at the position during spring practice, and if so, who?

Well, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has recently commented on the current state of Alabama's quarterback competition post-spring as well, saying on ESPN's "The Paul Finebaum Show."
"We got the three guys, and they're all, really, at different spots in their careers. Ty, having been in the program for a couple of years, and then, really, Austin getting a chance to take his first meaningful reps in practice this spring, and Keelon joining as an early enrollee. So, if you had to play, you kind of right now go with the veteran in Ty, did a nice job this spring, as did the others. We just need to keep that competition going. They know that. That's their expectation because they know that where they're at right now isn't good enough to where we need to be to have the success we want to have as a football team."
Alabama will not return to the practice field until August when the Crimson Tide begin fall camp. Will it be Simpson as the top option under center then, as well as in Week 1 against Florida State on Saturday, Aug. 30?

Steelers CB Beanie Bishop's viral Pitt logo stomp blasted by GM Doug Whaley

Steelers CB Beanie Bishop's viral Pitt logo stomp blasted by GM Doug Whaley Beanie Bishop Jr.'s viral disrespect of Pitt football continues to make headlines — as new information on the situation has been brought to light. On 93.7 The Fan Morning Show, it was revealed that the Steelers were invited into the Pitt Panthers' locker room — where Bishop would commit his stomp and cleat drag on their logo— making the situation that much worse. A special guest on The Fan Morning Show — acting Pitt GM Doug Whaley — made it clear he was less than thrilled with Bishop's actions: "When you get invited to someone's house, and when you're in their locker room house, as sacred as it is — that locker room, you have to give it mad respect. And for [the Steelers] to be invited guests over — and for him to do this — it shows how unprofessional, but to the core, the type of person he is. There's lines you just don't cross. It's a fun rivalry, and we say 'we hate each other,' but we hate each other on the field. We respect the rivalry off the field." Whaley also previously worked as the Steelers' pro personal creator from 2000 to 2010 — which adds an extra layer of intrigue to his comments. Additionally, Bishop was unapologetic about his actions or the potential backlash, claiming that he only cared about the reactions of Steelers fans and WVU fans. $1.3 Million Quarterback Makes Major NIL Move Before Freshman Season at Alabama

There's still plenty of good in the world of college football. With NIL opportunities changing the game, stories like this one are worth celebrating. Keelon Russell, the No. 2 ranked quarterback in the class of 2025 and the 2024 Gatorade High School Football Player of the Year, made headlines this week for a heartfelt gesture toward his mother. Advertisement It's a great reminder that beyond the field, these young athletes are using their platforms to support their families, give back and lead by example. The NIL-focused outlet On3 shared a photo of Russell's generous surprise: "NEW: Alabama QB Keelon Russell gifted his mom a new Mercedes Benz with NIL dollars." Russell's current NIL valuation stands at $1.3 million. His first partnership was with Panini America. He ranks 37th among all college football players in NIL valuation, and 2nd among freshmen behind Michigan's Bryce Underwood. Across all college athletes, he's currently 78th according to On3's rankings. Advertisement Russell will enter fall camp with a shot at winning the starting quarterback job under new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer. He'll be competing with experienced returner Ty Simpson and promising youngster Austin Mack. Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell (12).Gary Cosby/USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Back in February, Russell spoke with On3 Sports about his focus on staying grounded amid rising expectations and NIL attention: "The best advice was to understand what's coming towards you,' Russell said. 'Understand that your profile is your profile. Understand that your name is your name. Building that is the most successful thing that you can do, especially with how the NIL space is getting bigger. The performances of the platforms are getting way more advanced. NIL is something that takes away from the aspects of football. Somebody told me, focus on the key things." Advertisement Russell originally committed to SMU, but after a standout senior season at Duncanville High School in Texas, he flipped his commitment to Alabama. One of the key reasons? The development of Michael Penix Jr. under DeBoer at Washington, a path Russell hopes to follow. This story of Russell's gift to his mother stands out as an awesome example of how NIL is already helping student-athletes make life-changing decisions for themselves and their families.
