Champions League qualifier importance laid bare in Rangers Euro route
The club faces the Champions League second qualifying round early next season, followed by two more rounds to reach the league phase.
If they lose, Rangers would enter the Europa League qualifiers, making their path to the group stage more challenging.
An exit at the Europa League third qualifying round would see them drop into the Conference League play-offs for a chance at the group stage.
Rangers will be seeded for their Champions League qualifier due to their strong coefficient score and will face one of Panathinaikos, SK Brann, or Servette.
Victory would see them advance to the third qualifying round, while a defeat would significantly hamper their chances of European group stage football.
The draw system in the competition means Rangers' coefficient ranking will be used for the third qualifying round, whether they qualify or not.
This would place them as a seeded team if they progress in the Champions League.
However, a loss would likely see them as an unseeded side in the Europa League third qualifying round.
This would open the possibility of facing teams like Braga and PAOK.
The importance of their first Champions League qualifier is heightened by the impact on their route to league phase football.
Progressing to the Champions League third qualifying round would not only bring them closer to the Champions League proper but would also ensure league phase football in the Europa League.
Teams that lose in the Champions League third qualifying round or play-off round automatically enter the Europa League league phase without needing to navigate further qualifiers.

Thomas Frank calls for unity at Tottenham after replacing Ange Postecoglou
Spurs will play in the Champions League for the first time since 2022 courtesy of victory over Manchester United in Bilbao in May, despite recording their lowest finish of 17th in the Premier League. The Frank Philosophy 🧠 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 18, 2025 It was this fact, together with 22 league defeats, that persuaded Levy to dismiss Postecoglou and turn to Frank. 'I've only heard good stuff about all the people here, the training ground, the players,' Frank told the club's website. 'It's a good squad. It's an exciting, massive club with massive potential. So, it's just super, super exciting. 'I had very good conversations and meetings with Daniel Levy, (chief executive) Vinai Venkatesham and (technical director) Johan Lange where we discussed everything in depth, details about the club structure, processes, and of course I came with my views on things, how I saw it, my ideas, and the way I want to do things and how I try to build a team and a club.' There has been open hostility between Levy and supporters in recent seasons with fans largely directing their ire at the chairman rather than Postecoglou last season as the defeats mounted. Daniel Levy has been a target for Spurs' fans frustrations (John Walton/PA) Levy has at different times been accused of failing to invest in the team and has been blamed for the club's apparent drift since they reached the Champions League final in 2019. Frank is Spurs' fifth permanent appointment since Mauricio Pochettino, who led them to that final in Madrid, was sacked five months later. 'If you want to do something quick, you can go alone,' said Frank, who led Brentford to 10th place last season following finishes of 13th, ninth and 16th in their three previous Premier League seasons. He also brought them into the top flight via the play-offs in 2021. 'If you want to do something big or achieve something big, you go together. So, it's definitely about doing things together – me, the staff, the players. 'I think alignment is key, from top to bottom. Of course it starts from Daniel, Vinai, Johan, and me, and the more the four of us can be aligned, just like a unit, an unbreakable unit, the stronger we'll be. 'There'll be ups and downs. Right now, it's a fairytale. Everyone's happy, the sun is shining, it's fantastic.'

Liverpool join Chelsea in transfer race for £43m star who 'wants Anfield move'
Lyon star Malick Fofana has been on Chelsea's radar for a potential summer transfer but the Blues have now reportedly been joined by Liverpool in the race for his signature Liverpool are ready to rival Chelsea for Malick Fofana, and could benefit from the player reportedly favouring a move to Merseyside. The Lyon star, 20, has been linked with a £43m exit as the Ligue 1 club continue to trim their squad after selling Rayan Cherki to Manchester City. Belgium international Fofana joined Lyon from Gent in 2023 and starred in their run to the Europa League quarter-finals last season. The winger scored six goals in 10 appearances in the competition, and also won a penalty in the dramatic 5-4 defeat at Manchester United which saw his team eliminated. According to L'Equipe, Chelsea have made contact with Lyon's management and now Liverpool have joined the race. The Reds are believed to have made contact with Fofana's new representatives Roc Nation, whose roster also includes Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior. Earlier in the year, Fofana's then agent Bobo Fofana hinted a move to Anfield might well be his preference were he to leave Lyon. Since then, it has emerged that a bid in the region of £43m might be enough to get a deal over the line. "The choice of heart would be Liverpool. He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and El-hadji Diouf," Bobo Fofana told AfricaFoot. "Now, the choice of reason would be Newcastle, a well-structured club that could be a first step to gain experience before, perhaps, joining a club in the European top 5." Liverpool's reported interest comes amid continued uncertainty over the future of Luis Diaz. The Colombian star continues to be linked with Barcelona, though Liverpool are standing firm and want big money if he is to leave. "I'm very happy at Liverpool - I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well," Diaz told beIN SPORTS during the June international break. "If Liverpool gives us a good extension, or I have to see out my two-year contract, I'll be happy." Lyon have been trimming their squad after missing out on Champions League qualification as they look to deal with financial pressures. Cherki's exit has been the highest-profile move so far, with the playmaker joining Manchester City for around £36.5m, while former West Ham winger Said Benrahma has left for Saudi side Neom. "I want to win everything with City," said Cherki, who made his first City start against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday. "When I spoke with Pep [Guardiola] he said he wanted me. He was very, very clear [on that] and the system, the club, the city is very good for me." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. John Souttar Rangers injury latest after recent surgery
Russell Martin will meet his squad for the first time at the club's training centre on Monday morning. However, while he may be present in the building, Souttar will play no part in training, having undergone a hernia operation in London last week. Souttar played the season to its conclusion for Rangers before pulling on a Scotland jersey in the latest set of international fixtures in June. While the timing of his surgery is perhaps surprising, Souttar is understood to be on track to return to first-team training in enough time to prepare him for the Champions League second-round qualifier against Panathinaikos. The first leg against the Greek side will take place at Ibrox on either July 22 or 23, with the Glasgow giants travelling for the return leg a week later.
