President Droupadi Murmu to attend state-level programme on World Sickle Cell Day in Madhya Pradesh on June 19
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], June 16 (ANI): President of India Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to participate in a state-level programme on the occasion of World Sickle Cell Day to be held in Taloon Gram Panchayat in Madhya Pradesh's Barwani district on June 19, according to an official release.
President Murmu will be the chief guest at the program and Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, and other ministers will also attend the event.
The release also read that several innovations would be launched, including a genetic counseling awareness video and comprehensive guidelines/modules for affected pregnant women. Panchayats that have completed 100% screening of the targeted age group will be honored. The 'Sickle Cell Mitra' initiative will also be launched in collaboration with the NCC Directorates of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Sickle Cell Mitras will act as links between service providers to raise awareness among the youth population.
Additionally, special counseling camps will be set up in 33 affected districts on the occasion, where individuals will receive genetic counseling, disease management information, prospects for future generations, and details of necessary medical services. Special camps will be organized from sub-centers to district hospitals at all primary and secondary health institutions to identify patients, screen them, and test other family members, it added.
The release further stated that under the National Sickle Cell Eradication Mission, over 1.06 crore citizens have been screened so far in the state, out of which over 2 lakh carriers have been identified and 29,277 people have been found to be affected by sickle cell disease. Treatment for these patients is ongoing. Over 80.09 lakh sickle cell cards have been distributed, enabling affected citizens to understand their health status and receive appropriate treatment.
Continuous monitoring of screening and treatment is being done through the National Sickle Cell Portal. Patients are being provided with free treatment, genetic counseling, medicines, vaccination, and blood transfusion services. So far, 26,115 patients have received treatment with Hydroxyurea medicine. In coordination with various departments, screening camps are being continuously organized in tribal schools, colleges, and hostels.
The mission in the state began on November 15, 2021, as the State Hemoglobinopathy Mission in Alirajpur and Jhabua as a pilot project. Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the mission at the national level from Shahdol on July 1, 2023. Currently, screening is ongoing in 33 districts of the state, which includes 89 development blocks from 20 districts and 13 additional districts under the PM Janman Scheme, it added.
For sickle cell eradication, a special lab has been established at AIIMS Bhopal for testing newborns within 72 hours. All identified patients are being provided Hydroxyurea, folic acid, and free blood transfusion services. For critical patients, a bone marrow transplant unit has been set up at Indore Medical College, where more than 100 transplants have been performed. A Center of Excellence has been established in Rewa. Under the mission, continuous and determined efforts are being made in Madhya Pradesh to achieve the goal of completely eliminating sickle cell disease by 2047. (ANI)

"Historic step": Union Minister Kishan Reddy lauds centre's decision to conduct caste census
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on Monday lauded the centre's decision to conduct the 16th population census, which would include caste enumeration, and labelled it a 'historic step.' Advocating for the caste census, he said that the work at the policy level with regard to the welfare schemes, budget allocation, political reservations would be worked upon in a proper manner. 'The government of India has taken a historic step. Since Independence, the general census will entail a census of the backward classes. Today, the government of India has issued the notification. There will also be a caste census; it is a very big decision. After this, be it welfare activity, scheme, budget allocation, political reservation, everything will be worked upon in a proper manner,' Reddy told ANI. Speaking about the arrangements for the Covid-19 cases, Reddy said that he was visiting his Lok Sabha constituency (Secunderabad) and the hospitals here to inspect whether big hospitals have necessary arrangements for Covid cases. 'Recently, in a cabinet meeting, PM Modi directed all the ministers to visit big hospitals in their respective constituencies. It was to ensure that big hospitals had all the necessary arrangements for Covid this regard, today, I have come here to the Gandhi Hospital in my (Lok Sabha) constituency. The hospital's senior officials have assured me that the hospital is completely ready for the Covid patients,' the Union Minister said. On Monday, the central government notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.' The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh, snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. Subsequently, in the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected. Caste enumeration will also be done during the census. For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. This is the 16th Census since its beginning and the 8th since independence. The ensuing Census will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications. Provision of Self-enumeration would also be made available to the people. Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage. (ANI)

DNA verification completed for 119 victims in Air India plane crash
DNA tests have verified the identities of 119 victims who died on June 12 after an Air India flight AI1717 crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off, reported ANI. Dr Rakesh Joshi, superintendent of the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital confirmed that efforts were still ongoing to identify the more than 270 victims of the plane crash. Of these, 76 mortal remains have already been handed over to their respective families." He added, 'Out of the remaining 43, the mortal remains of 14 deceased will be handed over by tomorrow morning. As time is running, people are also going through panic. We are receiving panic calls. As we are matching DNAs, results will keep coming.' India hosts 2nd policymakers' forum to strengthen global collaboration on drug standards, access to affordable medicines
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): The Second Policymakers' Forum, aimed at promoting the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia, was inaugurated on Sunday at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in the national capital. The event was being organised by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in association with the Ministry of External Affairs and in collaboration with India's flagship affordable medicines initiative--the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). The inaugural session was graced by the presence of Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers, Anupriya Patel, who delivered the keynote address and released a commemorative publication marking IPC's 15-year journey. The gathering was also addressed by Secretary (South), Ministry of External Affairs, Neena Malhotra; Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Punya Salila Srivastava; Drug Controller General of India and Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC, Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi; and Advisor (Cost), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Rajiv Wadhawan. In her keynote address, Patel emphasised India's commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality-assured medicines and stressed the importance of regulatory harmonisation in facilitating global health equity. She also highlighted that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has emerged as a global hub for affordable healthcare solutions and continues to deepen its partnerships with nations through knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and health diplomacy. The Forum has brought together policymakers and senior drug regulatory officials from 22 countries, including Liberia, Togo, Mali, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Rwanda, Lesotho, Eswatini, Kenya, Botswana, Ethiopia, Comoros, Seychelles, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, St Lucia, St Vincent & Grenadines, Cuba, Barbados, and Chile, along with two delegates from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), reaffirming India's position as a valued and trusted partner in the realm of global health. This engagement builds on the momentum generated by the First Policymakers' Forum held in August 2024, which resulted in several participating countries formally recognising the Indian Pharmacopoeia as a book of standards for drugs. The growing international interest in aligning with India's regulatory frameworks reflects the credibility and scientific rigour of the Indian Pharmacopoeia, as well as India's proactive role in advancing global public health objectives. Over the course of the four-day programme from June 16 to June 19, delegates will participate in technical sessions covering pharmacopoeial standards, India's regulatory landscape, and successful public health schemes. The technical session on 16th June featured presentations by Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, Drug Controller General of India and Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC, on the role and progress of IPC; Dr Ranga Chandrasekhar, Joint Drugs Controller, on the regulatory mechanisms of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation; and Ravi Dadhich, CEO of Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India, on the implementation and impact of PMBJP. In addition, site visits to IPC's state-of-the-art laboratories in Ghaziabad and a Janaushadhi Kendra in Agra, as well as leading pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing and R&D facilities in Ahmedabad, have been arranged to provide delegates with first-hand exposure to India's robust scientific and regulatory systems.
