Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday inaugurated India's largest Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal for automobiles at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant, calling it a key step in boosting logistics efficiency for the sector.
The new terminal, connected to Patli railway station via a 10-km dedicated rail link, is part of the 121.7-km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor being developed by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC).
According to the Railway Ministry, the project involved an investment of Rs 800 crore, with HRIDC contributing Rs 684 crore and the remaining amount funded by Maruti Suzuki. The Manesar terminal has a loading capacity of 4.5 lakh automobiles per year, among the highest in the country.
Vaishnaw, addressing the inauguration, said Indian Railways has seen strong momentum in capacity building across both freight and passenger services, PTI reported.
'In the last two and a half years, a focused campaign has been launched to increase the number of general coaches. Over 1,200 general coaches were added just in the past year,' he said.
He announced that over 100 MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains will be upgraded to longer configurations — from 8–12 coaches to 16–20 coaches — to improve capacity for short-distance commuters.
A new MEMU factory has been set up in Kazipet, Andhra Pradesh, for this purpose.
On the rollout of Namo Bharat trains, he said 50 new trains will be produced to meet rising passenger demand.
The minister highlighted that in FY 2023–24, Indian Railways carried 720 crore passengers and 1,617 million tonnes of freight, achieving the second-highest freight volume globally.
He also detailed reforms in the Tatkal booking system set to begin July 1, 2025.
For the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal window, bookings will be restricted to Aadhaar-authenticated and KYC-verified users, aimed at curbing misuse and improving access for genuine passengers.
Vaishnaw mentioned a pilot project in the Bikaner Division, where passenger reservation charts are now being prepared 24 hours in advance instead of 4 hours before departure, as per the current norm.
Speaking on the new Amrit Bharat Trains, he said three are already operational with strong public response. 'Six more will be launched soon, and 50 additional trains are under production,' he said.
He added that the Railway Coach Factory in Sonipat is undergoing modernisation and will be inaugurated soon, playing a key role in expanding India's coach production capacity.

NDMC plans to replace 6.5k road signage by March 2026

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council will soon start replacing around 6,500 signage installed on its roads. The council has set March 2026 as the deadline to complete the Rs 19-crore project. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now An NDMC official said a tender was invited and some clarifications were sought from an agency. "As soon as clarification is obtained, the task will be awarded, and the process will start on the ground," said the official. Currently, many signage in the NDMC area are painted green, which is meant for highways as per the Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines. This leads to confusion and a lack of uniformity. According to the project plan, all signage will be designed through software to ensure uniformity and consistency. A presentation in this regard was made to the lieutenant governor earlier. "The changes are also suggested as many of these signage outlived their life and their reflector system needs renewal," the official said. The executive engineers of the road divisions earlier surveyed the existing signage. It was found that 6,439 signage were installed on roads, service lanes, etc. Further, an additional 80 new signage will be required for schools and 20 more for other places. The matter was discussed with senior NDMC officers, and to minimise the estimated cost, it was decided, among other steps, to utilise the stainless steel frames of existing signage. Currently, due to the involvement of multiple agencies in the management of the national capital, the signboards are also not uniform in shapes and colours. In New Delhi Municipal Council area, which is a smart city, the road signboards are in green in rectangular-triangle shapes and the signage outside buildings are blue in the same shapes. But according to experts, as per the codes of IRC, the signage inside an urban city should be on a blue-coloured background with the writing in white. Most of the agencies in Delhi are still following the rules set during the 2010 Commonwealth Games when most of the city signage were changed.

Dvpt fee may see up to 20-fold rise

Ahmedabad: Properties are set to get costlier with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) approving a proposal to hike development charges for new projects in the city. The proposal got the nod at its board meeting on Tuesday, paving the way for a 10-20-fold increase in the charges, which will directly impact the cost of residential, commercial, and other properties. Besides areas under Auda's jurisdiction, the new rates — on getting the state govt's green signal — will also apply in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits. Development charges are levied based on the area of land and construction when a building plan is approved in Auda or AMC areas. This hike will push up the cost for builders, and as a result spill on to buyers of properties, including homes. The changes in rates come more than 40 years after the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act of 1976 came into effect on Feb 1, 1978. Section 99 of this law grants urban development authorities the power to levy development charges on land and constructions within their jurisdiction, with Section 100 listing a provision for determining the maximum charge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo The 1976 law allowed charging Rs 50,000 per hectare or Rs 5 per sq m for land, and Rs 15 per sq m for construction. However, a govt notification on July 28, 2017, amended the law, allowing a maximum charge of Rs. 100 per square metre and setting the limit to Rs 10 lakh per hectare. On March 8, the next year, Auda proposed doubling the development charges, an idea which the state govt did not approve for five years. Auda however pulled back this proposal after Navsari Urban Development Authority in 2023 implemented revised charges. Auda then came up with updated rates at its board meeting in June 2023. These were finally approved at Tuesday's meeting and will now be sent to the state govt for a final nod. An Auda official speaking anonymously said, "Auda submitted a proposal to increase development charges in 2018, which remained pending with the state govt. It withdrew this proposal in 2023, the year the govt also increased jantri rates, which are likely to come into effect soon. Thus, we decided to revise the 2023 development charges and again submit a new proposal. The new charges determined at the board meeting on June 17 will now be sent to the state govt for approval. This is the first increase in development charges in over 40 years, previously approved by the state govt."

These projects will be executed in 42 urban local bodies. Once completed, the 43 projects will provide 3,949 dwelling units to beneficiaries. These will be executed at a total cost of Rs 256 crores, with shares received from the Centre, state, and beneficiaries. For the projects, the Centre will grant Rs 59 crore at Rs 1.5 lakh per dwelling unit, while the state will give Rs 39 crore at Rs 1 lakh per unit. Beneficiary-led construction under PMAY 2.0 refers to a scheme component where eligible families, particularly from economically weaker sections, receive financial assistance to construct new houses or enhance existing ones on their own land. In a letter to urban local bodies, the urban development department's joint secretary, Satish Chandra Singh, informed them about the state-level approval and asked local bodies to take steps and sensitise beneficiaries at the ground level. Among the urban local bodies, Bhubaneswar will see the execution of 44 dwelling units, while 26 dwelling units will be executed in Khurda, 115 in Puri, and 41 in Cuttack. The highest number of 663 dwelling units will be executed at Bhuban in Dhenkanal district. Sources said the projects were approved by the state-level sanctioning and monitoring committee, and the proposal will be forwarded to the ministry of housing and urban affairs now for granting financial assistance for execution of the projects.
