NEW DELHI: Voting counting for the Ludhiana West assembly bypoll in Punjab commenced Monday at 8 am, following the June 19 election that was necessitated by the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.
The election saw 14 candidates competing, with a voter turnout of 51.33 percent.
The counting process, which will consist of 14 rounds, is taking place at Khalsa College for Women under strict security arrangements.
The voter participation marked a significant decline from the 64 percent turnout recorded in the 2022 Assembly polls.
The main political parties contesting the bypoll were the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal.
The Aam Aadmi Party nominated Sanjeev Arora, a 61-year-old Rajya Sabha member and Ludhiana-based industrialist known for his social welfare activities.
The Congress party fielded former minister and Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu, 51, as their candidate.
The BJP's candidate was senior leader Jiwan Gupta, a member of the party's Punjab unit core committee.
The Shiromani Akali Dal chose Parupkar Singh Ghuman, a lawyer and former president of the Ludhiana Bar Association, as their representative.
Officials have implemented comprehensive security measures at the counting center at Khalsa College for Women to ensure a smooth counting process.

Deadly Suicide Attack Strikes Damascus Church, Killing 20 Worshippers

A devastating suicide bombing rocked the Mar Elias Church in Damascus's Dweila district on Sunday, June 22, claiming the lives of at least 20 worshippers and leaving dozens more wounded during evening prayers. The tragic incident unfolded when an extremist entered the religious facility and opened fire on congregants before detonating an explosive vest, according to Syria's Interior Ministry. The attack occurred as faithful gathered for their regular worship service in the neighborhood located on Damascus's periphery. Health Ministry officials, as reported by state news agency SANA, confirmed that a minimum of 15 individuals sustained injuries in the blast. However, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights suggested the total casualty count could reach 30 people, though they did not provide specific breakdowns. Local media outlets indicated that children were among those harmed in the assault. This marks the first incident of its kind to occur in Syria in several years, coming at a particularly sensitive time as Damascus operates under de facto Islamist governance while attempting to secure minority community support. The new leadership under President Ahmad al-Sharaa faces ongoing challenges in establishing control throughout the nation, with growing concerns about dormant extremist cell activities in the conflict-ravaged country. An eyewitness named Rawad provided testimony to The Associated Press, describing how he observed the perpetrator approaching the church alongside two accomplices who subsequently fled the scene. "He was shooting at the church, then went inside the church and blew himself up," the witness recounted while driving near the location during the attack. While no organization has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, Syrian authorities have attributed the assault to an Islamic State affiliate. The Interior Ministry's statement detailed how the attacker fired upon worshippers before triggering the explosive device, corroborating several eyewitness accounts. Emergency responders and security personnel quickly arrived at the scene, where they encountered panicked survivors in distress. Heart-wrenching images emerged showing distraught individuals, including one woman who collapsed in grief. State media photographs revealed the church's interior covered in debris and bloodstains, with pews damaged from the explosion's impact. Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa strongly denounced the incident, characterizing it as a terrorist act that contradicts the values uniting Syrian society. In a social media statement on X platform, he emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to equal citizenship rights and pledged comprehensive efforts to combat criminal organizations while protecting civilian safety. The attack raises significant concerns about security stability in Syria as the country continues navigating its post-conflict transition period under new leadership attempting to reassure diverse religious communities about their safety and protection.

Leaders Honor Syama Prasad Mookerjee On 72nd Death Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders commemorated the 72nd death anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on June 23, 2025, honoring the founding president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh for his unwavering dedication to national unity. Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi praised Mookerjee's exceptional bravery and determination in preserving India's territorial integrity. The Prime Minister emphasized that Mookerjee's contributions to nation-building continue to inspire reverence across the country. Born in Calcutta in 1901, Mookerjee was a distinguished academic who transitioned into politics in Bengal during pre-independence India. Initially a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, he served in Prime Minister Nehru's first cabinet but resigned in 1950 due to ideological differences with Congress policies. In 1951, Mookerjee collaborated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to establish the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is regarded, alongside Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, as one of the BJP's foundational ideologists. Mookerjee was particularly vocal about his opposition to Article 370, which provided special constitutional status to Jammu and Kashmir. He believed this provision hindered the region's complete integration with India and campaigned vigorously for its removal. His principled stance led to his tragic death in 1953. Mookerjee deliberately entered Jammu and Kashmir without the required permit to protest the dual governance system. He was subsequently arrested and died in custody, becoming a martyr for the cause of national unity. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described Mookerjee as "a distinguished scholar, a great freedom fighter, and a visionary" who dreamed of 'Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat' (One India, Great India). He highlighted Mookerjee's role in shaping India's early industrial policies as the nation's first cabinet minister post-independence. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta honored Mookerjee at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Park, noting how he "roared like a lion" and championed the slogan 'Ek Vidhan, Ek Samvidhan' (One Law, One Constitution). Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reflected on the historical significance of Mookerjee's sacrifice, noting that it took 72 years for his vision to be realized. He emphasized that the Modi government's decision to abrogate Article 370 on August 5, 2019, was a fitting tribute to Mookerjee's enduring legacy and his belief in a truly unified India. The minister stated that Mookerjee's fundamental principle - that a country cannot have two separate legal systems and remain truly united - continues to guide the BJP's ideology and India's path toward complete integration.
