Shrewsbury nature reserve beavers to be named by schoolchildren
Primary school pupils have been asked to suggest names for two beavers that have been brought to live at a local nature reserve for the first time in 400 years.The Eurasian beavers were released into an enclosure at the Old River Bed in Shrewsbury, last month.They were transported to Shropshire from Scotland, and their release last month is one of a number of recent projects in enclosed areas in the UK.Shropshire Wildlife Trust (SWT) & Shrewsbury Town Council have now launched a contest for primary school children to name the beavers, with an 18 March deadline for entries.
In a Facebook post announcing the contest, the wildlife trust said it had sent local schools a link where staff could submit children's suggestions. The pair is made up one male beaver and one female beaver.The trust added that staff could submit possible names on behalf of a class or on behalf of a whole school.
The government announced last week that the animals would be released more widely across England, under a licensing system overseen by Natural England.In the Shrewsbury project, it is hoped the beavers will help to maintain the nature reserve, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.SWT said in late February that the beavers were "settling in well" and had been filmed grooming each other, adding that this was a sign of a good relationship between the pair.

Welcome to kitten season, when animal shelters need all the help they can get
NEW YORK — Strawberry, Blueberry, JoJo and Mazzy were about 6 weeks old when animal rescuers coaxed them out of long metal pipes in the parking lot of a storage unit company. Meatball was a single kitten living in a cold garage with a group of semi-feral adult cats. Spaghetti, Macaroni and Rigatoni, meanwhile, were just 2 weeks old when the good folks of LIC Feral Feeders, a cat rescue in Queens, took them in and bottle-fed them until they were strong enough to survive. Consider these cuties the face of kitten season 2025. Kitten season, typically landing during warmer months, is the time of year when most cats give birth. That produces a surge of kittens, often fragile neonates. Shelters get overwhelmed, especially when it comes to the 24-hour care and feeding of extremely young kittens. That, as a result, triggers a need for more foster homes because many of the 4,000 or so shelters in the U.S. don't have the time or resources for around-the-clock care, said Hannah Shaw, an animal welfare advocate known as the Kitten Lady with more than a million followers on Instagram. "We see about 1.5 million kittens entering shelters every year. And most of them will come into shelters during May and June," she said. "Shelters need all hands on deck to help out through fostering." Familiarity with fostering animals is high, Shaw said. The act of doing it is a different story. There's a false perception, she said, that the expense of fostering animals falls on the people who step up to do it. These days, many shelters and rescues cover the food, supplies and medical costs of fostering. "A lot of people don't foster because they think it's going to be this huge cost, but fostering actually only costs you time and love," she said. Lisa Restine, a Hill's Pet Nutrition veterinarian, said people looking to adopt kittens should take pairs since cats often bond early in life. And how many cats is too many cats per household? "This is nothing serious or medical but my general rule of thumb is the number of adults in the house, like a 2-to-1 ratio, because you can carry one cat in each hand, so if there are two adults you can have four cats and still be sane," she said. Square footage to avoid territory disputes is a good rule of thumb when planning for cats, Restine said. Two cats per 800 square feet then 200 square feet more for each addition should help, she said. Littermates, like Macaroni and Rigatoni, are much more likely to bond, Restine said. Kittens not biologically related but raised together often bond as well — like Meatball and Spaghetti. But adopters hoping to bond an adult cat with a new kitten arrival may be disappointed. "Once they're over that 3- or 4-month mark, it's hard to get that true bonding," Restine said. Typically, kittens stay in their foster homes from a few weeks to a few months. While statistics are not kept on the number of kitten fosters that "fail" — when foster families decided to keep their charges — some shelters report rates as high as 90%. That's a win, despite use of the word "fail," advocates note. Shaw sees another barrier holding people back from fostering: the notion that it requires special training or skills. That's why she has dedicated her life to educating the public, offering videos, books and research on how it works at her site Companies are coming on board, too. Hill's, a pet food company, runs the Hill's Food, Shelter & Love program. It has provided more than $300 million in food support to over 1,000 animal shelters that support fostering in North America. "About a quarter of a million kittens, unfortunately, don't survive in our shelters every year," Shaw said. "The shelter's going to be there to mentor and support you. So I think a lot of the fear that people have about fostering, they might find that actually it is something you totally can do. It's just scary because you haven't done it yet."

Iconic 'Popeye' boat reported missing in ‘Abersoch Triangle'
An old fishing vessel that's featured in countless photos has been listed as 'missing' by its perplexed owner. Known as the 'Red Boat', it has languished in Abersoch's inner harbour, Gwynedd, for at least a quarter of a century. The boat's chubby outline and striking colour gave it semi-iconic status – so much so that it featured on a school mural and appeared in a children's story. But in late May, owner Peter Hazell was left scratching his head when arriving at the harbour to find its berth empty. The businessman bought the Red Boat as a renovation project five years ago – he was hoping to make a start once legal matters had been clarified. After its disappearance, he issued an appeal on Facebook 's Abersoch Appreciation Page but this drew a blank. 'It's still a mystery,' he said. 'There are over 20,000 people in that group yet not one person has offered any sensible clues. Someone must have authorised and paid for its removal.' In the absence of information, the appeal became the butt of gentle online humour instead. One man wondered if the boat had disappeared into the 'Abersoch Triangle'. Another added: 'Popeye probably wanted it back.' A call was issued to check back gardens. Little is known about the boat's history or name. Over the years it's had several owners with some living onboard for short spells. Not so long ago the vessel was the main feature of a mural on Ysgol Sarn Bach near Abersoch. Its most recent known appearance in a photo was on May 15. Despite being in a poor state of repair, Mr Hazell had ambitions to renovate the boat once he'd established who was responsible for the berth. His aim was to formalise the berthing arrangement on land with no obvious ownership – he said the Land Registry has been unable to clarify. He said: 'I fully acknowledge that cosmetically the boat was in poor condition, although the hull was solid. She rested above the high average high water mark and the hull would only be exposed to water on high spring tides. 'My intention was to renovate and I am confident Red Boat was capable of being made weatherproof and waterproof. But before doing so I wanted to be sure of the rights of occupation.' Local enquiries about the boat's whereabouts have so far failed to provide answers. Natural Resources Wales has been removing abandoned boats, classified as marine litter, but its efforts have so far focussed solely on the Dee Estuary in northeast Wales. If it was removed as part of a clean-up, by a different body, Mr Hazell wonders why he wasn't approached first, being the known owner. 'How has someone has just removed my boat without notice?,' he said. 'No one is wanting to take responsibility.' Man to face no action after boy hit in Blandford Forum accident
