Republican lawmaker sparks outrage with plan for ICE facility surrounded by alligator-filled moat

Time of India4 hours ago

A Republican lawmaker from Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier, has shocked many people with a wild new idea. He wants to build an immigrant detention center in the middle of the Everglades, surrounded by a moat full of alligators. He's calling it 'Alligator Alcatraz', and says it would help carry out mass deportations for ICE. The plan has sparked outrage and strong reactions from both supporters and critics, as per reports.
He shared the idea on X in a short 1-minute video. Uthmeier said the Miami-Dade Collier Training Facility is a good place for this, it's 39 square miles and not being used much. He said it could hold 1,000 migrants within 1–2 months.
He said it's cheap because they wouldn't need a big fence, alligators and pythons act like natural guards. His words, 'People get out, there's not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide', as stated by Newsweek.

He strongly supports Trump's immigration and deportation plans, and said Florida will keep helping. 'This presents a great opportunity for Florida to work with Miami-Dade and Collier counties,' he said.
The Department of Homeland Security reposted Uthmeier's video and seems to agree with the plan. DHS posted on X, "
ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ
" will help state and local law enforcement arrest and detain immigrants under the 287g Program. Florida has 43% of all 287g ICE agreements in the U.S., followed by Texas with 14%, as stated in the report by Newsweek.

NMC Reappoints Silent ‘Swachh' Ambassadors, Overlooks Real Ground-Level Champions

Nagpur: In yet another instance of tokenism trumping accountability, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday reappointed 10 individuals as Swachh Bharat brand ambassadors — despite the fact that most of them were inactive throughout the past year. Shockingly, some didn't even attend their own reappointment ceremony. According to insiders and civic records, barring a civic activist and a homemaker — both of whom consistently supported NMC-led cleanliness campaigns — the rest of the ambassadors neither showed up for official initiatives nor launched any public awareness activities independently. Despite this, the civic body once again handed out the honorary titles, ignoring grassroots workers who have been relentlessly promoting hygiene, waste segregation, and sustainable practices in the city. A senior NMC official summed up the frustration: "We see housing society groups conducting composting workshops, young volunteers organising street cleaning drives, and NGOs educating slum clusters on segregation. But these names — mostly influencers, radio jockeys, bloggers, and fitness coaches — have done virtually nothing for the cause." Shockingly, at least three of the reappointed ambassadors did not even turn up for the installation event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 6 sätt att gå i pension bekvämt med 3 000 000 kr Fisher Invest. Norden Undo Yet, their absence didn't deter additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant and chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle from handing out offer letters to eight others at a function. Defending the reappointments, Dr Mahalle claimed, "They often participate in civic body events," though NMC failed to provide any Swachh Bharat awareness programme which they either attended or organised awareness drives in their localities. The current list includes a mix of digital influencers with thousands of followers, a sportsperson with marathon credentials, a transgender representative, and individuals from entertainment and wellness backgrounds. But residents question the effectiveness of giving out ceremonial titles without any performance audit. "There's zero accountability. This is a publicity stunt that insults the work of hundreds of citizens who sweat it out for cleanliness without any recognition," said a civic group member from Dharampeth. With the city fairing poorly in Swachh Survekshan rankings since the last couple of years, critics argue that Nagpur's symbolic approach could hurt its performance in future rankings too, which increasingly rely on authentic citizen participation. Without a structured evaluation framework or criteria for impact, the brand ambassador initiative risks becoming irrelevant. "If NMC is serious about cleanliness, it must stop chasing popularity and start rewarding dedication," said a vigilant citizen. "Otherwise, these invisible ambassadors will only tarnish the very mission they're supposed to lead."

Filing of PILs inappropriate when statutory remedies are available: HC

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has held that invocation of extraordinary jurisdiction by way of a public interest litigation (PIL) is inappropriate and impermissible when a robust and adequate statutory framework already exists for redressal of a particular grievance. "Allowing unfettered recourse to PIL in such instances would amount to a judicial usurpation of legislative foresight and undermine the primary responsibility of the legislature to craft laws. Bypassing these meticulously designed mechanisms through PIL circumvents the intended architecture of grievance redressal and potentially dilutes the role of expert authorities," the high court has said. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel has passed the orders on a petition filed by one Anuj Malik and others. The petitioner sought directions to restrain all online opinion trading platforms, mobile applications, websites, and digital mediums from advertising, promoting, or marketing betting and wagering activities through platforms, including YouTube, X (Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, radio, print media, television, in blatant violation of statutory laws. They argued that despite a robust legal framework in place, the law was being flouted through misleading advertisements and unregulated financial systems. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brigade Grand Dreams 2025 | 12 Month Payment Holiday* Brigade Group Learn More Undo The petitioners further submitted that if appropriate action was not undertaken, such platforms would continue to dupe gullible users. Responding to the plea, the govt informed that there already exists a legal and statutory framework within which any aggrieved person can approach the authorities concerned for redressal of any grievances, as raised by the petitioner. The govt counsel specifically drew the attention of the court to The Haryana Prevention of Public Gambling Act, 2025, which has been notified from April 9, 2025, and submitted that without adverting to the existing statutory framework, approaching this court by way of PIL amounts to bypassing the legislative mandate. After hearing the matter, the bench disposed of the petition, asking the petitioner to raise his grievance before the authorities concerned in terms of extant laws. BOX 'Unwarranted proliferation of litigation' Encouraging indiscriminate PILs, despite available statutory remedies, leads to an unwarranted proliferation of litigation, a burden on constitutional courts, as well as a judicial docket explosion. These risks transform constitutional courts into primary redressal fora rather than their intended role as ultimate arbiters of constitutional questions. Judicial resources, being scant and precious, must be conserved for matters of genuine public importance MSID:: 121975661 413 |

Demands unfulfilled claims schools' body, against reopening in protest

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Sanstha Mahamandal (MRSSM), a statewide association representing trusts that manage educational institutes, has decided not to reopen schools on June 23 to protest against the 'neglect' of pending demands. MRSSM general secretary Ravindra Fadnavis said on Friday that the state has long ignored requests from schools, ranging from pending RTE payments to infrastructure, and these need to be resolved as a priority. MRSSM stated that their key demands include property tax exemptions for educational institutions, residential electricity rates for aided schools, a free solar energy policy, permanent recognition under the Right to Education Act, the immediate release of ₹2,400 crore in pending RTE student fee reimbursements, and the recruitment of clerical and Class IV staff. Additionally, they have called for the immediate cancellation of the March 15 govt decision regarding school staff approvals, which MRSSM deemed unjust and infringing on their jurisdiction. While MRSSM has a statewide presence, it is not clear how many schools will remain closed. Many schools are members of multiple associations and do not always follow the diktats of all their groups. However, with MRSSM being an association of trusts/societies, it is expected that hundreds of schools affiliated with the state board may remain closed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Former MLC (teachers' constituency) Nago Ganar, MRSSM divisional secretary Kishore Masurkar, and academic Rajendra Zade, who were present at Friday's press meet, supported Fadnavis' stance. While the new academic session began on June 16 for the rest of Maharashtra, schools in Vidarbha are scheduled to start on June 23. Fadnavis said, "We have communicated our decision to keep schools closed to the state govt but have not heard back from them." MRSSM is preparing for a long haul, saying that if the govt does not respond on time, then their agitation may prolong beyond the June 23 date.
