Spain part ways with women's national team head coach Montse Tome

Spain's women's national team has parted ways with head coach Montse Tome. The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has announced Tome's contract, which expires at the end of August, will not be extended. Spain's Under-23 head coach Sonia Bermudez has been confirmed as Tome's replacement. The decision was finalised at an RFEF board meeting on Monday and comes 15 days after the 2025 European Championship final. Spain were defeated on penalties by England in the final after extra-time ended in a 1-1 draw. Advertisement An RFEF statement read: 'The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation would like to thank Montse Tome for her work, professionalism and dedication in various roles during her time as a member of the RFEF national teams, particularly during her time as senior national team coach.' Tome had been in the role since September 2023. She had become the first woman to hold the position after Jorge Vilda was dismissed as head coach. Vilda resigned amid the fallout from the 2023 World Cup final win, where former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales kissed Spain forward Jenni Hermoso. Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault and fined more than €10,000 ($11,400) in March this year. Tome served as an assistant manager under Vilda before taking the head coach role. She guided the side to victory in the 2023-24 UEFA Nations League, beating France in the final. Tome did not pick Hermoso, Spain's record goalscorer, for her first matches in charge against Sweden and Switzerland of national team, though she was recalled and and was part of the Nations League-winning last year. In November Hermoso, Irene Paredes and goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez were controversially dropped from the national squad, despite being chosen as captains by their team-mates. Hermoso has not played for Spain since October. Her successor Bermudez, 40, is a former Spain international, playing 63 times for her country between 2008 and 2017. She represented clubs including Barcelona and Western New York Flash before her retirement in 2020. She has held various coaching roles with Spain's youth sides. () Spot the pattern. Jury given majority direction in trial of US woman accused of murder plot

Jurors trying a US citizen accused of involvement in a murder plot in the UK in 2019 have been given a majority direction by the trial judge. The jury in the trial of Aimee Betro, who denies conspiracy to murder, possessing a self-loading pistol and a charge of fraudulently evading the prohibition on importing ammunition, first retired to consider its verdicts on Wednesday last week. Prosecutors allege Betro, who is originally from West Allis in Wisconsin but was living in Armenia until earlier this year, flew to Britain in August 2019 to take part in a plot orchestrated by co-conspirators Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nabil Nazir, 31, to attack another family as part of a 'violent' feud. The Crown also claims the 45-year-old graduate hid her face using a niqab when she got out of a Mercedes and tried to shoot Sikander Ali at point-blank range outside his home in Measham Grove, Yardley, Birmingham. The attempted shooting took place shortly after 8pm on September 7 2019, jurors have heard, but the handgun jammed, allowing Mr Ali to flee in his car. Giving evidence during her trial, Betro suggested that the perpetrator was 'another American woman' who sounded similar to her, used the same phone and wore the same sort of trainers. Betro also told jurors that it was 'all just a terrible coincidence' that she was around the corner from the scene of the attempted assassination six minutes later. Jurors have so far been in retirement for more than 15 hours over four days. After the jury confirmed on Monday that it had yet to reach unanimous verdicts on any of the counts faced by Betro, Judge Simon Drew KC gave the panel a majority direction. Before inviting jurors to resume their discussions, the judge told them: 'I ask you to continue to deliberate and to continue to try to reach verdicts on which you are all agreed.' The judge said he could now accept verdicts or either guilty or not guilty on which at least 10 of the 12 jurors agreed. The judge added: 'But it cannot be less than that (10).' The court has heard Aslam and Nazir, who were jailed last year for their part in the assassination plot, were involved in a feud with Mr Ali's father, Aslat Mahumad. Nazir and Aslam, both of Elms Avenue in Derby, had been injured during disorder at Mr Mahumad's clothing boutique in Birmingham in July 2018, jurors have been told, leading them to conspire to have someone kill him or a member of his family.

Paul Gallagher dropped from Oasis afterparty in Dublin ahead of court appearance

Paul Gallagher will no longer perform an Oasis afterparty DJ set in Dublin ahead of his court appearance this month. The older brother of Liam and Noel Gallagher was due to appear at The Grand Social this weekend to coincide with the Oasis reunion tour's Dublin performances. Police said in July that Paul Gallagher, 59, who lives in East Finchley in north London, had been charged with rape, coercive and controlling behaviour, three counts of sexual assault, three counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of making a threat to kill and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The alleged offences are claimed to have taken place between 2022 and 2024, the Metropolitan Police said. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday August 27. A spokeswoman for The Grand Social venue confirmed to the PA news agency that Paul Gallagher 'will no longer be DJing at our Oasis afterparty'. 'Mani from The Stone Roses will DJ on Saturday night and Alan McGee will DJ on Sunday,' she said. The promoters of the event, Up Close and Personal Promotions, have been contacted for comment. Liam and Noel Gallagher announced last August that they would perform together for the first time since Oasis's dramatic split in 2009. The Oasis Live '25 tour kicked off in Cardiff's Principality Stadium in July, before moving on to Manchester, London and Edinburgh. The band have two sold-out performances in Dublin's Croke Park on Saturday August 16 and Sunday August 17.
