Building Oman's Human + AI Edge: From vision to practical action

Zawya07-05-2025

As Oman moves toward achieving its Vision 2040 goals, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just a technological tool but a national capability that can boost productivity, prepare the workforce, diversify the economy, and strengthen global competitiveness.
Oman has long been a nation of bold navigators and early adopters. Historically, its sea-faring pioneers embraced complexity and opportunity with a sense of purpose. Today, that same spirit of fearless and purposeful innovation can guide the nation as it enters the AI era – with strategic clarity, skilled and ready workforce, and execution discipline at the core.
The future of AI in Oman lies not in grand but abstract ideas or one-off pilot technology projects, but inpractically harnessing AI capabilities within daily work. The real breakthrough happens when individuals – regardless of technical background – adopt AI to streamline processes, enhance decisions, and free up time.
The current wave of AI innovation is a great equaliser. It's intuitive, accessible, and powerful – giving individuals and organisations new ways to work smarter and grow faster. As AI upskilling and adoption expands, so do the possibilities for Omani entrepreneurs to create entirely new business models and community solutions. This is where GDP impact – potentially $1bn or more – can emerge.
Making AI real: Focus on human, not hype
Last month, Oman American Business Council (OABC) hosted a webinar led by HumanSense Labs and a guest speaker who previously led Microsoft Office AI initiatives. The goal was to demystify AI and put people's minds at ease. The event drew a diverse audience ranging from government representatives to SMEs and General Managers to technologists. That engagement reflected a key insight: Oman is ready for AI!
Participants were keen to drive practical outcomes. One leader emphasised the opportunity to use AI to unlock valuable organisational knowledge hidden in documents, especially in Arabic, where AI could bridge information gaps. Another was curious about how to improve prompting skills, a new but critical competency for professionals looking to use AI tools effectively within their daily workflow. A third acknowledged integration challenges across legacy systems, and we emphasised that AI journeys must be business-driven – not treated as typical IT projects.
Rebecca Olson, CEO, Oman American Business Council noted, 'Oman has the opportunity to lead not by chasing trends, but by applying AI in ways that are grounded in its people and its priorities. The interest showed by business leaders during our recent session was unmistakable – there's real appetite to move from curiosity to practical action.'
Start where you work
While AI has existed since the 1950s, today's AI is different: it is practical, intuitive, and accessible even to non-technical professionals. That creates both a powerful opportunity and a navigational challenge: Where do you begin? How do you make AI truly useful? How do you keep pace?
The good news: AI doesn't reward perfection, it rewards momentum. Momentum begins with one empowered employee, one process, one decision.
Pick a specific function or set of tasks that are repetitive or time-consuming
Experiment using GenAI as a digital co-worker and trusted colleague
Explore how you might re-imagine entire workflows using Agentic AI
While national strategies and governance frameworks are critical, the best starting point is simple: treat AI like a core life skill – on par with reading, writing, and arithmetic.
This is the moment to move from curiosity to confidence building, from being a bystander to becoming a confident adopter. One practical step is to assess your organisation's AI readiness to gain insights into your current capabilities.
Oman has a rare opportunity to harness the power of AI – building on its legacy of exploration and its tradition of thoughtful, purpose-driven development.
The Human + AI Edge is not about replacing people – it's about empowering each person to achieve their fullest potential and contribute to a greater national vision.

Sharjah launches proactive plan for 5,600 trips during Eid Al Adha holiday

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has put together a special plan for the upcoming Eid Al Adha holiday. This initiative is aimed at making sure travellers can enjoy comfortable and safe transportation as they celebrate the Eid. With an increase in people wanting to travel during this festive time, the SRTA is stepping up its services to ensure everyone can move smoothly between different areas in Sharjah and beyond. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it. They are also increasing staff at busy bus stations, especially the Jubail Bus Station, which will be open from early morning until late at night to accommodate the larger number of passengers expected during this busy holiday. The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. WAM

SRTA launches proactive plan for 5600 trips during Eid

Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid al-Adha holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. Regular comprehensive trips The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. Al-Othmani pointed out that these efforts are part of a plan to create a well-rounded public transport system that meets the growing need for travel during busy times like holidays. He noted that Route 22 will not be in service during the Eid holiday because the Souq Al Haraj market is closed. To make things easier for passengers, they have made some changes, including quicker arrival times and more ticket sales points at bus stations and inside buses, to minimize delays and crowding. To manage passenger flow, especially at the Jubail station, the teams have stepped up their preparations. They have increased the number of staff on duty and are providing the necessary support to ensure smooth operations. They are also allowing people to book bus tickets in advance and are keeping a close eye on how things are running to maintain a high level of service. Maritime transport During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. The trips will run from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a boat leaving every two hours. Each journey will take about 35 minutes. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the station at least 15 minutes before their departure to ensure a smooth boarding process. This service is designed to provide more transportation options for everyone and help connect different types of transport. Promoting tourism Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. Public engagement Al Jarwan mentioned that during the Eid holiday, a special call center will be available 24 hours a day to help people book taxis. This includes different types of vehicles like regular taxis, family-sized cars, options for women, vehicles for those with special needs, and electric cars. You can make reservations by phone, through a smartphone app, or by visiting a website. The call center keeps an eye on all the bookings to make sure taxis arrive as fast as possible. It also welcomes feedback from the public regarding bus and taxi services, helps with reports of lost bags, and answers questions about the services offered across the emirate, including Sharjah City and other regions. He highlighted that the call center plays a vital role in connecting with the community, gathering and analyzing feedback to improve services in the future.

Create Production brings Vox Cinemas' sonic identity to life with Hans Zimmer

Create Production has joined forces with Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment to unveil Fall in Love with Film, Vox Cinemas' latest brand film that signals a new chapter for the region's premier cinema operator. The cinematic tribute, released in celebration of Vox Cinemas' 25th anniversary, is underscored by an original score and sonic identity created by legendary composer Hans Zimmer. The emotionally rich film is a love letter to the power of cinema, weaving together themes of love, community, and escapism. At its heart is the story of a young boy growing up with the cinema as his lifelong companion. The narrative is brought to life by Zimmer's evocative score, blending Hollywood-style orchestration with 90s nostalgia and Arabic musical elements. As part of Vox's broader 'experience-first' strategy to reconnect with audiences, Create Production oversaw the entire creative process, from script development to full-scale production across eight regional markets. The campaign produced more than 85 assets in a variety of languages, formats, and platforms, ranging from IMAX screens to social media reels. Create also led localisation efforts across four languages and dialects, ensuring cultural resonance throughout the region. Muhammad Ashraf, Senior Producer at Create Production, said: 'Working alongside the Vox Cinemas team to develop a film worthy of Hans Zimmer's signature sound was a true privilege. We set out to craft a narrative that celebrates Vox's magic and elevates the region's sonic identity.' The brand film is currently screening in Vox Cinemas across the Middle East, with additional distribution on digital platforms, social media, and out-of-home advertising. The custom sonic branding developed for the campaign will continue to roll out throughout 2025, becoming an integral part of the Vox experience—from cinema lobbies to customer service interactions. This project adds to Create Production's portfolio of landmark regional campaigns, continuing its track record of high-profile collaborations, including previous work with Zimmer and large-scale productions across the Middle East.
