Indian diaspora in UK participates in I-Day celebrations
Indian high commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, unfurled the national flag and read out excerpts from President Droupadi Murmu's address to the nation. Minister of state for social justice and empowerment Ramdas Athawale also attended the event.
Sukant Sahu, general secretary of Odisha Society of the United Kingdom (OSUK), said the Independence Day function reminds participants of the struggle to free India from British rule.
"Like many Indians, I also brought my son for the celebrations so that he learns about the history of our motherland though he is a British citizen by birth," said Sahu.
During the three-hour-long celebrations, Athawale and Doraiswami felicitated special guests. They included Sukhjinder Kaur Lochab, granddaughter of Kartar Singh Sarabha, Ghadar Party revolutionary who gave his life for the country, Ananya Prasad, the first Indian woman to row solo and unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, and Yogesh Alekari, who has travelled across Europe and Africa on a motorbike.
"After crossing 16 countries and riding 23,000 km, I've completed 30% of my world journey and reached London — where I was felicitated for the second time by the Indian high commissioner to the UK," Alekari wrote in an Instagram post.
The programme included cultural performances by master Advait Iyer, who performed 'Maa Tujhe Salaam' solo on the violin, Kathak performance by Richa Srivastava and Kirtirupa, and Bharatanatyam dance by Guru Geetha Sridhar and her disciples. The celebrations were attended by 400 to 500 Indians.

Nick Jonas' quirky bedroom confession with Priyanka Chopra sparks debate: ‘I don't like it warm, I run hot'
Nick Jonas' recent comment about his bedtime ritual with wife Priyanka Chopra has stirred a debate online. The singer appeared in TikTok's special series Are You Okay?, where one clip has gone viral after fans believed the 32-year-old revealed his 'beige flag.' He admitted he sees the bed strictly for sleeping, avoiding things like eating, reading, or even watching TV there. He also explained how he adjusts when Priyanka is around. 'I think beds are for sleeping only,' Nick said, adding, 'I don't sit on the bed, I don't eat on the bed, I don't read a book in bed or watch TV. I can't do it.' When pressed on why, he explained, 'I just don't like it to get warm. I run hot. It's a whole thing.' Nick admitted that when Priyanka wants to watch something in bed, he won't join her under the covers. Instead, he 'pulls a seat up and sits next to the bed' where she is lying down. Also read: After Priyanka Chopra picks hot dogs over vada pav, Nick Jonas shares his love for Indian cuisine, especially pickles: 'We also like chicken biryani' Host Bri Morales called the habit 'crazy,' and fans piled on in the comments. One wrote, 'Pulling up a chair while Priyanka is in bed watching TV is insane.' Others said they felt attacked because they scroll or eat in bed every day. Some even joked he's 'more Indian than Priyanka,' pointing out that Indian moms would love his no-food-in-bed rule. Still, not everyone was shocked, plenty agreed with him, calling it a green flag and insisting the bed should only ever be for sleep. Nick said he only uses the bed to sleep and not to watch tv. He pulls up a chair if he wants to watch tv in his room. I can't explain it, but that is such a Nick Jonas thing to do. Verdict is in: He is not okay because why would you want to rob yourself of being comfy in bed? 😂 — Briana believes in love 💙 (@resendez_briana) August 19, 2025 The playful confession comes at a time when Nick is busy touring with his brothers Joe and Kevin for their 20th anniversary tour. But, at home, he says he likes having a simple and disciplined routine. Earlier this year, he told E! News that home is where he relaxes on the couch with his wife and daughter, leaving all the work worries behind. Nick and Priyanka first met in 2017. At the time, Priyanka thought the singer had friend-zoned her, given that she showed up at the Met Gala 45 minutes late. Soon after, Nick slipped into her DM, and they finally went on a proper date. Things moved fast between them. They got engaged in July 2018 while vacationing in Greece and married the same year in December. The grand wedding saw both Hindu and Christian marriage ceremonies in Priyanka's home country of India. Since then, their relationship has matured, often spending family time together when not working. Priyanka has also been open in past interviews about what made her fall for Nick. She once said she wouldn't have married him if he didn't 'tick all the right boxes,' stressing that respect mattered just as much as love.

Documentary series on Pune's historical Ganesh temples released
1 2 Pune: A five-part documentary series explaining the significance of five Ganapati temples — Trishund Ganapati, Khinditla Ganapati, Gupchup Ganapati, Maticha Ganapati and Modi Ganapati — was released on Wednesday ahead of Ganeshotsav. Historian and president of Itihas Premi Mandal, Mohan Shete, has given a snapshot of history and the significance of these locally revered temples in the series. The videos are made with the help of AI, accompanied by Shete's commentary on the historical facts associated with the temples. For example, if I need to explain something from an inscription that is not easily visible, it becomes easier to do so if it is captured on camera. Then, people can read the inscription in a better way," Shete said while unveiling two episodes of the documentary series. The remaining three episodes are slated to be released shortly. "It is a matter of concern that there are several videos on social media that disseminate wrong information about the historical relics in Pune. It is my responsibility to describe historically accurate facts," Shete said. During the filming, many locals approached the team and provided their interpretations or accounts of the history behind the temples, Shete said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Shete also said these temples have very old traditions and interesting facts associated with them. "Maticha Ganapati has a tradition of hosting a socio-religious singing form of 'kirtan' going back 100 years. A very old person told me that he listened to a kirtan performance by prominent kirtankar, Govindswami Aphale, in his childhood," Shete said. In the case of Trishund Ganapati, a sculpture of a rhinoceros in chains on the walls indicates the British victory in the Battle of Plassey. "The current affairs of those times were captured in such scriptures," he said. The Modi Ganapati temple got its name from the Modi family, hailing from Gujarat, who lived in the area. Members of the family acted as mediators between the Peshwa and the British. "The construction of the Maticha Ganapati temple is said to date back to Moraya Gosavi, a contemporary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. There is a mention of this fable; however, there is no concrete evidence of this narrative; we have mentioned it accordingly in the video," he added. Shailesh Badve, who conceptualised the documentary, said the team hasmade use of AI to make these videos, but has ensured the images are accurate and do not hurt people's sentiments. "We have also used AI to create songs and music. After completing the Ganesh temple series, similar episodes on Maruti temples in Pune and historical temples in Pandharpur have been planned," Badve said.
