College basketball adding one game to regular season
The current NCAA rules say 'teams can schedule 28 games with an additional three-game, multiple-team event, for a maximum of 31 games. Teams can also choose to schedule 29 games with a two-game, multiple-team event, again with a 31-game maximum. Or teams can schedule 29 regular-season games without a multiple-team event included.'
Under the new rules, which begin during the 2026-27 season, teams can schedule up to 32 games without the restriction of having a multi-team event involved. There is no penalty for scheduling fewer than 32 games if a team wishes to do so.
The oversight committee said the NCAA is trying to simplify as many rules as possible and allow for greater scheduling flexibility. Conference expansion impacting non-conference scheduling was also a factor.
There is an expectation that larger MTEs, especially those funded by NIL contracts, will move to three- or four-game formats. Extra home games also have financial implications.
"Multiple high-major coaches told CBS Sports in recent months that they are actively pursuing and hoping to play a nonconference game in the midst of the conference season moving forward, finding benefits in advance of postseason play in March," CBS Sports senior writer Matt Norlander said.

Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches
Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly. MSU basketball listed among top teams in Big Ten in latest preseason rankings

Texas TechCC: @FDSportsBook, @ Michigan State basketball remains just outside of the top 20 in the latest preseason rankings from one of the game's top analysts. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2025-26 college basketball season, and the Spartans remain listed just outside the top 20. Rothstein has the Spartans at No. 21 in his updated version of the rankings that were released on Tuesday. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans rank No. 5 in Rothstein's list but there is a notable drop off after the top three. He has Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 7) all in the top 10, and then next from the Big Ten is Oregon (No. 20) one spot before the Spartans. Michigan State is the reigning Big Ten champs and went the furthest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament by reaching the Elite Eight this past season. However, the Spartans have lost a number of key pieces off that highly-successful team, including leading scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins -- so many like Rothstein anticipate a step back from the Spartans next season. As I've said during most of this offseason, I feel like anywhere from No. 15 to No. 25 is about right for the Spartans in next year's preseason poll. I would be quite surprised if they were any higher than No. 15 and shocked if they were unranked when the official preseason polls drop in a few months. Oklahoma QB John Mateer denies gambling, says Venmo transaction titles were ‘inside jokes'
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer says he has never gambled, and the school says there is no NCAA investigation after a recent report showed Mateer twice paid someone on Venmo in 2022 for 'sports gambling.' 'The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false,' Mateer said in a statement Tuesday on social media. 'My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends.' Mateer, who was at Washington State during the time in question, said he can understand why the Venmo descriptions could lead one to believe otherwise, so he decided to set the record straight. 'I have never bet on sports,' he said. 'I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling.' In a statement, Oklahoma said it uses ProhiBet for comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities. 'OU takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situations of concern,' the statement said. 'OU Athletics is unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending.' Mateer followed former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma this past offseason. Mateer passed for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and just seven interceptions and ran for 826 yards and 15 scores last season. Mateer was one of three players who accompanied Oklahoma coach Brent Venables at SEC Media Days in July. Venables and Oklahoma's players have raved consistently about Mateer's leadership. He's considered one of the nation's top transfers and a key reason the Sooners open the season ranked No. 18 in the AP Top 25.
