Innovative eco brand Earthya has launched compostable bags, helping Malaysians tackle the challenge of microplastic pollution.

Zawyaa day ago
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 19 August 2025 – Malaysians use approximately 9 billion plastic bags every year, including trash bags that are difficult to fully decompose. Over time, these break down into microplastics, increasing the risk of microplastic ingestion among locals and making Malaysia the country with the highest intake in the world.
To address this issue, local innovative eco brand Earthya has launched the Earthya Compostable Bag, a product developed over three years of dedicated research. Made entirely free of any plastic components, it can fully break down into plant fertiliser in natural conditions or home compost environment, helping to ease Malaysia's struggle with microplastic pollution.
Malaysians Rank First Globally in Microplastic Consumption
According to The Straits Times, among 109 countries surveyed for microplastic pollution, Malaysians consume an average of 502.3 milligrams of microplastics per person daily, equivalent to about 494,000 particles. Over 50% of this microplastic intake comes from consuming fish. This is closely linked to Malaysians' heavy reliance on single-use plastics in daily life, including plastic bags for takeaways, disposable food containers, plastic beverage cups, straws, shopping bags, garbage bags and more. Without a robust recycling and waste management system, these plastics eventually break down into microplastics, which enter the air and waterways, widely infiltrate the human food chain, and ultimately end up in the human body.
Earthya Hopes to Reduce Microplastic Pollution with Compostable Bags
Founder of Earthya, Ivan Chan Bin luan, expressed his hope that these compostable bags will help ease Malaysia's microplastic pollution challenge.
Therefore, together with the Earthya team, he conducted in-depth research into various biodegradable materials suitable for making plastic alternatives, and discovered that many trash bags are wrongly marketed as eco-friendly, such as those made from Photo-Degradable, Oxo-Degradable, or Bio-Degradable plastics which still release microplastic particles during composition, posing potential risks to the environment.
Ultimately, they selected premium calcium carbonate and an internationally certified compostable polyester as the core materials, successfully developing the Earthya Compostable Bag — a truly eco-friendly trash bag that contains no plastic, naturally decomposes into plant fertiliser, and leaves no microplastic residue.
Compared to conventional trash bags on the market, the Earthya Compostable Bag offers 5 unique advantages:
100% Plastic-Free
Contains no traditional plastic components such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). Generates no microplastics during use—safer and more eco-friendly.
Naturally Decomposable—No Special Equipment Required
Suitable not only for industrial composting but also able to break down in home compost systems or natural soil.
Shelf Life of up to Two Years
When compared to most cornstarch-based compostable bags with a shelf life of only 6 months, the Earthya Compostable Bag is better suited for long-term storage and everyday use.
Strong and Durable, Feels Just Like a Plastic Bag
Combines strength and familiar feel, so going green doesn't mean giving up convenience or changing your habits.
Comes in an XS Size, Specially Designed to Fit Most Household Kitchen Waste Bins
Offers a hassle-free composting solution for households, while preventing methane emissions caused by sealing food waste in plastic bags.
Most importantly, the calcium carbonate added to Earthya bags can be absorbed by the soil, helping to balance pH levels and further improve soil quality, achieving multiple environmental benefits.
Certified by Multiple Local and International Authorities
Earthya Compostable Bags have obtained the following certifications to date:
TÜV Austria OK Compost (Home Compost Certification)
The OK Compost is a certification program specifically for compostable products, managed and issued by TÜV Austria.
MyHijau (Malaysia's Official Green Product Certification)
The MyHijau certification is one of Malaysia's most authoritative eco-labelling systems, designed to promote sustainable practices among businesses.
BPI Compostable (United States BPI Compostable Certification)
The BPI certification mark on a product indicates that it has passed rigorous testing and meets compostability standards such as ASTM D6400 or D6868. These standards assess the product's ability to break down in industrial composting facilities, a process that typically takes up to 90 days, while ensuring no harmful residues remain.
Australia Standard for Industrial Compostability AS4736 (Australia's Industrial Composting Standard)
Australia's Industrial Composting Standard AS4736 sets clear requirements for compostable packaging materials. It mandates visible decomposition within 12 weeks and complete biodegradation within 6 months.
Spreading Awareness on Microplastic Hazards to Inspire Greater Eco Participation
Founder Ivan Chan Bin Iuan shared that the inspiration behind developing the Earthya Compostable Bag was to normalise eco-friendly living—proving that sustainability doesn't have to come at the cost of convenience, and that everyone can easily take part.
"We hope that when you pick up an Earthya Compostable Bag, you feel a sense of assurance and trust—knowing that every bag you use will never break down into microplastics, will never become a burden to the planet after disposal, and will never end up as microplastics consumed by you or your children."
He emphasised that no one should underestimate the power of individual action. If just one person chooses a trash bag that doesn't break down into microplastics, that's already a reduction in the generation of microplastics. And when 10, 100 people, or even thousands make the same choice, it will help ease Malaysia's microplastic pollution.
Besides that, to further drive environmental awareness, Earthya actively organises environmental talks, participates in exhibitions, and shares educational content on social media to strengthen the public's understanding of eco-friendly products.

ADNEC Group awarded UAE year of sustainability seal for landmark progress on sustainability initiatives

ADNEC Group's TerraTile transforms event waste into reusable flooring, advancing circular economy practices in exhibitions. Over AED 8.85 billion in economic impact delivered in 2024, vs 7.4 billion in 2023, through sustainable operations and partnerships. Abu Dhabi – ADNEC Group has been officially recognised with the 'Plan to Action: Year of Sustainability's Seal' for its tangible, data-backed achievements in environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation. The award was granted following a national open call to UAE-based organisations demonstrating measurable, creative, and community-driven sustainability efforts aligned with the goals of the Year of Sustainability 2024. The seal, awarded by the UAE's Year of Sustainability initiative marks a continuation of the national drive to embed sustainable actions across all sectors. This year's focus shifted from learning to doing, encouraging organisations to act across four areas: green transport, energy and water conservation, responsible consumption, and planting wisely. Sustainability is integral to how ADNEC Group operates, contributes to the community of Ahu Dhabi, and is aligned with the UAE's national vision. The Group plays a key role in Abu Dhabi's economic development, with the Sustainability Seal a recognition of the impact of its efforts. ADNEC Group's submission was recognised for its ambitious, system-wide sustainability efforts. ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi is now fully powered by clean energy—sourced from solar, wind, and nuclear—through a Clean Energy Trade Agreement with EWEC. This offsets all electricity-related carbon emissions via International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs) accredited by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, making it the first and largest event venue in the Middle East to achieve this milestone. In parallel, the Group has introduced AI-driven HVAC systems at the venue, projected to reduce annual electricity consumption by 20%, or approximately 6 million kilowatt hours. Waste reduction and circularity have become central to the group's operations. More than half of all waste across ADNEC Group's business clusters is now recycled, and, the catering arm of the ADNEC Group, Capital Catering's facilities process up to 1,200 kg of food waste per day into compost or a dry soil enhancer. Used cooking oil is also converted into biodiesel. Meanwhile, TerraTile—a 100% recycled, modular flooring system developed with Terrax—turns event waste into durable flooring, offering a recyclable, UAE-made alternative to conventional stand materials. Additionally, when TerraTiles reach the end of their life cycle, they in turn, can be recycled to produce new ones. Community engagement was a key element of ADNEC Group's application. Through partnerships with Tadweer, Ne'ma, and the UAE Red Crescent, the group donates unserved food, expands public awareness campaigns, and encourages responsible waste behaviours at events. It has also embedded ethical sourcing practices across its supply chain and scaled local procurement through its In-Country Value programme (ICV). In 2024, ADNEC Group contributed AED 8.566 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to Abu Dhabi's economy, marking a significant increase from AED 7.4 billion in 2023. The Group also supported more than 62,000 jobs across the UAE—up from approximately 51,000 the previous year. Additionally, employee volunteerism nearly doubled year-on-year, with total volunteer hours reaching close to 27,000 in 2024 compared to 13,000 in 2023, underscoring ADNEC Group's growing social and economic impact. The recognition from the Year of Sustainability reflects ADNEC Group's broader Net Zero strategy, which includes a full assessment of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and a defined transition plan aiming for a 25% reduction in carbon footprint per employee by 2030. ADNEC Group has also awarded a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) project at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, expected to generate more than 8.5 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy in its first year. The system will supply nearly 30% of the venue's electricity needs and offset approximately 6,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Entities awarded the Seal are featured on the national 'Plan to Action' map and are invited to continue leading by example as the UAE advances toward its 2050 net-zero target. Omani startup charts regional growth with AI-powered food supply platform

MUSCAT: Oman's food and beverage (F&B) sector is witnessing the rise of a new player that blends technology with sustainability. ZabonEx, the Muscat-based startup using predictive analytics to help businesses 'sell more and waste less,' has set its sights on becoming a regional force. In an exclusive interview with the Observer, Co-founder Hatim Moosa al Abri said the company is now moving swiftly to capitalise on its recent $100,000 pre-seed funding round led by Future Fund Oman and ITHCA Group. The investment, secured last month, represents not just a financial boost but also validation of the company's vision to address one of the region's pressing challenges—food waste. 'We'll use this investment to speed up—without losing discipline,' Hatim explained. 'On the technology side, we're improving prediction accuracy, adding plug-and-play integrations with common POS and ERP systems, and automating model updates so customers don't need extra IT work. On market reach, we're turning successful pilots in Oman into repeatable playbooks and scaling them across the GCC.' SMARTER FORECASTING DOR SMARTER BUSINESS Founded by Hatim alongside co-founder Almuhannad al Balushi, ZabonEx offers a SaaS platform designed for F&B producers, distributors, and retailers. The system connects to a customer's sales and stock data, predicts demand at the product and outlet level, and provides clear order recommendations. The approach is distinctive. While many forecasting tools focus on broad trends, ZabonEx drills down to fine-grained, daily insights, taking into account product shelf life, minimum delivery volumes, and logistics routes. Customers interact with a simple dashboard, can tweak assumptions, and push results back into their own systems seamlessly. 'Where we stand out is in our ability to deliver daily, actionable recommendations with very fast setup,' Hatim noted. 'We also offer human-in-the-loop controls and an optional computer-vision add-on that improves on-shelf and expiry data. It's about making technology practical, not complicated.' SCALING BEYOND OMAN Having proven its concept in Oman, ZabonEx is preparing to scale regionally, starting with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, followed by Qatar and Bahrain. These markets, Hatim explained, share a similar retail structure and an urgent focus on food security. 'The opportunities are significant, especially with multi-brand distributors and national agendas to cut food waste,' he said. 'The challenges are around change management, data differences, and longer sales cycles. We address these through short pilots that prove impact quickly, bilingual products in Arabic and English, and strong local partnerships.' This expansion strategy mirrors the startup's emphasis on building secure, cloud-aligned solutions. With GCC countries pushing for data sovereignty, ZabonEx is ensuring its platform complies with local data residency requirements, positioning itself as a trusted partner in a regulated landscape. TECHNOLOGY MEETS SUSTAINABILITY At its heart, ZabonEx is not just about operational efficiency but also about environmental and social impact. Food waste is a global problem, with the UN estimating that one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted. In the GCC, where food imports dominate, waste reduction is directly tied to national food security. By helping businesses order with more precision, ZabonEx contributes to reducing expiries, minimising returns, and ensuring better shelf availability. These small, everyday decisions accumulate into lasting impact across the supply chain. 'This directly supports Oman Vision 2040 and regional priorities on food security and sustainable consumption,' Hatim said. 'At ZabonEx, success means less waste and more sales. This funding helps us deliver that faster across the region, while we build strong data systems so the benefits keep growing over time.' BUILDING THE INTELLIGENCE BACKBONE OF F&B With its strong investor backing, growing team, and scalable product, ZabonEx is positioning itself as what Hatim calls the 'intelligence backbone' of the food supply chain in the Middle East. The company's next chapter is clear: deepen its roots in Oman, expand into neighbouring markets, and continue refining its predictive engine to make smarter business decisions easier for F&B companies of all sizes. As Oman sharpens its focus on entrepreneurship and digital innovation under Vision 2040, Omani startups like ZabonEx are proving that local ideas can tackle global problems—while creating growth opportunities across the region. 2025 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
