Mechatok Releases New Single 'Virus Freestyle'

Scoop30-04-2025

Mechatok - aka Timur Tokdemir - has subtly become a defining architect of today's underground experimental pop and rap. While touring globally, he's released a steady run of solo EPs and albums that have shaped a sound where emotional immediacy meets sleek, digital-age aesthetics, leaving a mark on a new generation of genre-defining artists like Drain Gang, Ecco2k, Yung Lean, Charli XCX, and Bala Club.
2025 is set to be the Munich-born artist's most ambitious year yet. He kicked things off with the euphoric single ' Addiction ', and now returns with ' Virus Freestyle ', a vibrant follow-up that channels his signature bouncy and experimental production into a track that spirals around an infectious vocal hook. It's the second offering in a new era of Mechatok's sonic world, which is starting to reveal itself, one that captures the mixed emotions of inner-city hedonism against the backdrop of internet-driven escapism and everyday routine.
Talking about ' Virus Freestyle ', Mechatok says: ' I really just recorded this one as a single take on my favourite synth Virus TI Snow and listened to that loop for a couple of years. Actually finishing the track felt like collaging meaningful and totally random memories into some kind of neon melancholia flashback sequence.'
Mechatok spent his teenage years in Munich studying classical guitar. During this time, he began exploring club culture on his trips to Berlin, which ultimately led him down a different path. Rather than pursuing a career in classical music, Tokdemir relocated to Berlin and released his first EP, See Thru which put him on the radar of the international electronic music scene. He began collaborating with Yung Lean and Palmistry and soon amassed a catalogue of euphoric, minimal pop nuggets. Not yet 21 at the time, Tokdemir toured the States, Asia, South America, and Europe and materialised his unique style on 2018's All My Time, released on Lorenzo Senni's Presto!? imprint to wide acclaim. In the years that followed, Mechatok continued to explore new angles on pop and electronica by putting out undeniably catchy collaborations with Bladee and Ecco2K, video-game soundtracks such as 2020's ' Defective Holiday ' and mixes that all make use of his unmistakable craftsmanship. At the end of 2021, he released a collaborative album with Bladee, followed by a remix album that featured Charli XCX, Evian Christ, and more. Having received praise from the likes of Pitchfork and Resident Advisor, fans can look forward to more experimental, boundary-pushing electro-pop from Mechatok throughout 2025.

Doue dazzles as PSG humble Inter 5-0 to win Champions League final

Photo: Marco Bertorello / AFP Desire Doue scored twice to inspire Paris St Germain to their first European Cup triumph with an emphatic 5-0 win over Inter Milan in a totally one-sided Champions League final on Saturday. After losing the final to Bayern Munich in 2020, Luis Enrique's PSG side, who teetered on the brink of elimination in the league phase this season, finally claimed the trophy their big-spending Qatari owners have craved. PSG put on a masterclass which the more experienced Inter side had no answer to, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes through former Inter defender Achraf Hakimi and Doue. The 19-year-old Doue was on target again in the 63rd minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored 10 minutes later and substitute Senny Mayulu netted three minutes from time to seal the biggest winning margin in a Champions League final. Before kickoff, the Italian fans sang "There's Only Inter", the club's anthem, but on the pitch, their side went missing and PSG ran riot to secure a richly deserved win. PSG bossed the game from the start, maintaining possession with their slick passing, every player constantly searching for an opening, which they found in the 12th minute when Vitinha played a pass into Doue in the box. Inter defenders appealed for offside, but Federico Dimarco played the PSG man onside, and the youngster kept his cool to roll the ball across goal and hand Hakimi the simplest of tap-ins. The second came eight minutes later from a quick PSG counter, which found Ousmane Dembele on the left wing. Dembele drove forward before floating the ball to the far side, and Doue had time to control the ball on his chest, and his shot took a deflection off Dimarco to beat the wrong-footed Yann Sommer. PSG killed off the game with a third goal when Vitinha slid the ball through to Doue in the area, and the 19-year-old coolly slipped the ball past Sommer. Inter were shell-shocked, but things only got worse. Dembele's defence-splitting pass from his own half sent Kvaratskhelia haring away before beating Sommer at his near post, a goal which brought the PSG bench, including Luis Enrique, onto the pitch as they knew this game was all over. PSG still had time for a fifth as Mayulu fired past Sommer from close range after a pass from substitute Bradley Barcola, and the final whistle was greeted with huge roars from the French fans who had been singing loudly all game. - Reuters

The revival of a genre that never went away

Once considered niche and tucked away in dusty record stores or rural community halls, country music in New Zealand is enjoying something of a golden moment. From chart-topping Kiwi artists to two dedicated music stations in the past 18 months, the genre is striking a heartfelt chord with more people than ever before. Mark Rogers, host of Nashville Babylon on RNZ, grew up listening to country music, from Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to Marty Robbins, and tells The Detail that it's all about the storytelling. 'As a kid, the songs and storytelling caught my imagination,' he says. 'The songs have no fat on them, they cut to the chase straight away, they are pretty simple, there's nothing too complicated about them, you know exactly where you are. 'And the classic country songs have something in them that will appeal to just about everyone. They hit home. They are easy to get and understand. People can identify with them. 'It's rare that they are talking about big flash cars or billion-dollar jewellery. It's the working man's music – that's been its appeal for many, many decades, and that will continue to ring true.' Kiwis, it seems, are falling more in love with the genre. And over the past 18 months, this has prompted the launch of not one, but two dedicated country music radio stations in New Zealand. First, broadcaster Mike Puru started Southern Cross Country, found on digital platforms. Then this month, NZME launched iHeartCountry NZ, offered on the iHeartRadio app and selected FM frequencies around the country. There are no presenters, just pre-programmed country music. Both stations showcase global legends and local voices. Among those voices, one name stands out: Tami Neilson. The Canadian-born, New Zealand-based powerhouse has been a trailblazer for years and has just won the inaugural Country Music Honour for Contribution to Country Music in Aotearoa, recognising her outstanding impact and unwavering dedication to the country music scene. 'What Tami is doing at the moment is astounding; she has been teaming up with Willie Nelson over in the States, which is a dream come true for her,' Rogers says. 'It's incredible and I'm super proud of what she is achieving…. I would like to think she will get on the (mainstream radio) playlists, because what she is doing is absolutely fantastic. The songs are great, and radio loves a good song, so there is no excuse not to play Tami.' But she is competing for airtime with unlikely country singers, including Beyonce and Post Malone, who have swapped pop and rap, respectively, for country beats. 'This has just exploded, and I think it's a good thing,' Rogers says. 'Admittedly, I'm not a massive fan of some of it, but I'm a big fan of others. 'I don't think it's cheapened the genre at all; it's just music developing.' And it's clear Kiwis want more of it, proving country music in New Zealand isn't just surviving. It's thriving.
